Missing the 2nd set is a bummer :( would be cool if there was another secret recording hiding out there in the labyrinths... come to think of it... this sounds like the same Space Martini Version that made it onto their demo...
With Planet X, Derek Sherinian wanted to shock the world of music in general and musicians specifically and boy did he a great job! This is still giving me chills, god-like! 🤩
Man... i just love Derek's chord progression choices on the Atlantis trilogy at the beggining. The man has such a great ear for great prog music from the 70's and 80's. I can hear influences from so many stuff on his songs; Pink Floyd, ELP, Return to Forever, Mahavishnu Orchestra and so many others. Here's a guy who has drank and heard a lot of good music from that era, and was able to put it back on his own music.
I never thought i could find this! I was a few steps away from the camera at that moment! I cannot believe this concert was recorded nor on the internet after all these years...
Steve Vai has relied on these much greater talents to carry him live in the past. This line-up really kicks some ass. T-Mac is on fire and Donati is his usual "ten times the sum of all other drummers". I wish T-Mac could recapture some of old fire now he has recovered from his illness, maybe get this line-up back together (With PSMS, I don't think Portnoy can even get close to Virgil. Sheehan is past it and relies on gimmicks too often)
not really my kind of music but certainly makes your chest pound faster, incredible marksmanship and magical event for such small venue, simply magic 🤘
The opening epic they're shredding here is the three-part suite 'Atlantis' from the Derek Sherinian album 'Planet X' (1999). Leave it to the MIT muso nerds to be yammering away through the quiet sections!... WTF??
That's why the sign behind the stage at the potato says no recording - the sound isnt' great, and you hear people yakking. but I find myself watching a bunch of this anyway.
One of the most insane gigs ever... would have loved to seen this in person (although I was only 8 years old, playing Metal Gear Solid and listening to shitty Brit Pop :P).
I believe I'm the barer of good news and not bad when I announce that the Virgil donati solo played in this video is the epitome of human drumming ability! Prior to this JoJo Mayer has had vwry melodic examples , Vinnie coliauta very mathematical examples and Dave weckl very fluid examples. At this very pin point we have a donati encompassing all of those other examples but combined. Drum solos are for me their best when melodic and desipherable, for me donati solos were this still at this moment. Later he became too complex. My argument is that Virgil had in recorded history documented when drum solos best fitted and when over shadowed
OLD Baked Potato venue. Most underrated shredder guitarist...EVH? Gimmie a break...popular band does not equal legend. Tony is in another class than EVH...just sayin'...w/o TH-cam cats 15-30 don't know Tony and they should!

Zac Staylon do you have their demos
Imagine being in this small Jazz bar. Seeing this live. The amount of skill in one room
I was there that night. It was insane!
@@KevinKeith lucky. I wish man
I saw the Virgil donati band there many many times from 2005-2009
Porra
Mama MacAlpine must have been recording this! LOL!!
Boombox, planet x Cassette, bag full of beer, a little bag of weed and a double handful of mushrooms.., the perfect weekend, great teenage years!!!
Spot on dude!🎸
With Planet X, Derek Sherinian wanted to shock the world of music in general and musicians specifically and boy did he a great job! This is still giving me chills, god-like! 🤩
18 years ago and sounds as fresh as any crap out there. This is some next level shit. I'm glad that I lived through this.
there not 18 in this! Mcaplpine had an afro perm bro!
@@threshkinta he said 18 years ago not "18 years old"
and 7 years later still sounds fresh
Donati is...AMAZING!
😀😀😀
Wow! Twenty three years ago in a small club!?!?! If you stumbled in here without any pre-warning you'd be in heaven.
Had no idea Phil Bynoe was ever in Planet X. Neat.
Never seen Tony so into what he's doing...fabulous to watch!
I was there. At the old Baked Potato on Sunset. I never miss a Tony show

It is rare to see Tony playing with EVH model...
Very Nice!
Wow. 15 years ago. Planet X at the top of their game. Love this! Thanks for posting.
Boy do I miss Tony, Virgil, & Derek in the Planet X context.
Its 20 now mate and still as good as ever ✋ 😊
Krzysztof Jakubowski Yup. Time for a reunion! 🎸🥁 🎹
the best virgil , tony and derek
Also cool to see Planet X with Phil Bynoe on bass. Cool.
All the people driving by had no idea the monstrous virtuosity being thrown down that night 🌞
The mix is fantastic! Love it!
My favorite band! Wow! Planet X Go!
Virgil from another planet ....x
Hell yeah !!!!!!!!!!!!!!! This pure gold!!!!!!!!!!!!!! thank yo so much for this!!!!!
Apocalypse was freaking sweet!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
This is so good. Love it

still love it!!
Man, Tony looks like he's having a blast! Thanks for uploading this, Frank!
This is some next level playing. I always come back to watch this video. Thanks for uploading!
Wow! Remember when music was exciting?
First time I have seen Tony look like he's having fun
I never thought i could find this! I was a few steps away from the camera at that moment! I cannot believe this concert was recorded nor on the internet after all these years...
Its so sad that we live in a culture where a band this awesome can't make a living playing this music.
Well we live in a world where 90% are dumbos.
Best they can get is 100 people at The Baked knowledgeable
what a gem, they rock the house. Thanks for posting that
Simply WOW just the first song blew me away !
THIS IS GOLD
THAT NIGHT WAS A LUXURY
Magnifical group ! Great musicians !
Damn I turned 29 that day & lived around the corner of the Baked Potato. Why did I not go? I even recall seeing the ad in the LA Weekly.
Draxtor Despres can you also answer your own question?
yes I can = I just did not go....
Of course everyone talks during the most vibey parts, especially the bass solo
Amazing!!!!!!!!!!!
this is everything
Sherinian solo material, fuckin sweet!
The whole band is crazy but i'm not sure people understand who Tony McAlpine is.............crazy good, nobody plays like him.
Wow, this is a gold mine. I hardly know any of this stuff.
Excellence.
Super..this level U.K. of 79 year...
Wish i was there, this is awesome.

Great post . Thanks.
More underated guitar player

Tony was a monster in those years...
Fuck.... That s enormous....
HAHAHAHAHa I'm fucking dying at this conversation on "night mode" happening in the background
too bad he couldn't stay zoomed out.....to see VD too.....

Holy shit..
I was there. Great time!
This has some of that Bozzio UK vibe.
His solo for me I love for his maths and music and not just one over the other
Joya!
As much as I love the album version of Box, this version is amazing.
The best part is how Derek is dressed to impress. Dudes a idol
He looks like a waiter
That's why the sign behind the stage at the potato says no recording - the sound isnt' great, and you hear people yakking. but I find myself watching a bunch of this anyway.
36:41 - 37:20 King Crimson Influences?
Planet x, filmed with a baked potato...🥰
WHEN I LISTEN TO TONY OR DEREK DO ACCOUNT THAT I AM TRAVELING ON A TRAIN FROM UNION PACIFIC OR OF SANTA FE BURLINGTON NORTHERN
Хорошая альтернатива!!!
THAT WOULD HAVE GIVEN TO BE THERE THAT NIGHT
One of the most insane gigs ever... would have loved to seen this in person (although I was only 8 years old, playing Metal Gear Solid and listening to shitty Brit Pop :P).
Anyone know what kinda guitar Tony is playing at this gig?
Imagine this is the 235th floor and those are flying cars through the window.
Now where did I put my keys to my time machine...
Tony acts like he done had a couple cups of bubbly, BUT his playing here is supremely good.
dude! why you cut out Virgil? Jesus
one of those rare shows where the crowd doesn't hit the bathroom at the drum solo...
56m22s onwards holy shit...
I wonder what 1999 Virgil would have thought of 2017 Virgil...
You sure this is live at the baked potato and not filmed using a baked potato?
Sorry I had to :^)
Audio quality is pretty great tho considering!
Please real music geeks (no ofense) give us tracklist with timers :D
Posted
why the cam on MacAlpine all the time? there is also a bassplayer and a drummer
The guy who shot it was a big T-Mac fan I suppose.
FrankTdrumz or just an idiot who thinks its all about the guitar
+robert van den bergh maybe the camera is a family Macalpine member..
...weil die Kamera-Person unfähig ist ! - ...but the music is great !!!!
if you play drum you watch the drummer, if you...well you get it
What's the name of first song?
Da' Madrid Atlantis part 1. 'Apocalypse 1470 B.C.' is from "Planet X", the first album of Derek Sherinian. Best regards

"The next song is called atlantis. Ok lol... well then the next 3 songs are called atlantis!" Prog jokes 😆
Zappa meets Primus...
lol it's funny seeing T Mac playing on an Ernie Ball
It is Peavey actually.
Even More funny lol
Some of the best playing guitars are Peavey. I've owned 6 of them. What's in a name anyway?
Peavey Wolfgang
I'm pretty sure that's not The Baked Potato they are playing at.
ebaykevin yes it is. They had a location on Sunset for a while. I was at that show
lo grabó la mama del guitarrista?
