  • Its a rainy Memorial Day so grinding rocks seems like the perfect thing to do. Come along with me as I take a piece of jasper from rough to polish.

Bat cave porcelain jasper. Gorgeous stone, gorgeous polish... lucky owner!

I would buy this stone in a heart beat! I've never seen bat cave jasper live, it's one of the rarest colectable specimens of porcelain jaspers and, as I've said, you're very lucky to have such a gorgeous piece! It pretty looks like a palmstone, don't you think? Jasper is my favourite stone, it's family members are quite remarcable and the variety of them sets it appart from the other minerals! I have 2 large jasper palm stones, one being kambaba and the other red, and I would love to have such a stunner in my collection!

I don't care much for the colors but you did a nice job on it. I like your grinder from Diamond pacific and the geysers, they're cool.

Thanks Dave. Great stuff. What was the total time spent on that piece of jasper and what are the various grit sizes on your wheels? I'm just starting out and have a not too fancy grinding set up with an expandable drum on the right side and a hard wheel on the left. I'm learning a lot by watching you. The location here is NE Minnesota about 17 miles from the big lake so obviously Lake Superior agates are the ones I am working with. Those carnelian agates you have are beautiful. Thanks again.

Wow, I would love a chance to find LS Agates. My wheels are the stock wheels on a Diamond Pacific Genie. I don't have the machine in front of me to get you the exact grits but a quick visit to their site should tell you all you want to know. As a quick side note, for the kind of shaping I do I really am abusing the coarsest wheel. Diamond Pacific makes a better wheel for shaping. Thanks for watching.

I cant find any info on what hand tools to use , to cut and shape and or carve faces in Jasper. Red and brown jasper. My piece is 6x6x5 I want to make hand made plates first, and sculped from there

Hi Dave, Me again. I'd be glad to send you a handful of Lake Superior agates. They wouldn't be huge but perhaps olive size. Would you prefer rough or polished ( probably rough so you can finish them to your liking )? It's becoming more and more difficult to find any agate much larger than an olive because almost all of the pits are closed to agate pickers usually due to liability concerns. I find most of mine by walking the gravel roads but of course by that time they have been crushed and broken. Anyway let me know. Mike

    • @sprocketsrocket

Hey Michael, I have an idea for you. Why not send one that I can make a "Let's see whats in it" video. Once done I can send you the finished goods. If you want to send one small one for me that would be cool but please don't deplete your stock. I'm way more of a finder than collector:-)
