    Okay so I recently got sub 20
    here's some tips
    use advanced cross, it's very good(I use it)
    you can use intuitive f2l (I use it)
    work on look ahead. dont turn fast, turn slow until you get fast on your own(I did this)
    learn at least 4look last layer(I use 2 look oll and 1-2 look pll)
    then just practice until you get it 👍
    hope this helped

      Alyssa Cubes Advanced cross? I use half beginner half CFOP f2l, if that makes sense. I also use 3/4 look LL. I'm just under 27 seconds on an average day. If anyone could tell me what the Advanced cross is? Thanks!

      +Flare1876 Advanced Cross isn't a technique. It's just understanding how to build more efficient crosses. I really dislike the term Advanced Cross because it makes it seem so daunting.

    As for your first tip, the whole "Algorithmic F2L is evil" mentality really screwed me over for a very long time. I finally realized what I was doing wrong and learned a bunch of algorithms and I've gotten so much faster.

    • @jasonthecuber
      @jasonthecuber 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Noah Fence I learned intuitively at first and then as I got faster picked up algs. I'd say by 30 I had quite a few algs. I'm about 18 now and still need to apply some of these tips. Occasionally I still struggle with full cross planning. :O Not usually but once in a while.

    • @Blazik3n99
      @Blazik3n99 7 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Noah Fence I think the mentality is that learning an alg for every case isn't always beneficial. I don't learn an F2L alg like a LL alg, I sorta memorise it intuitively and understand what it is doing to the pieces. I might be able to write down an OLL or PLL alg but I wouldn't be able to do that with an F2L alg.

    • @graham_lively1732
      @graham_lively1732 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I never used algs for F2L I just used intuitive that I can execute as fast as an alg as soon as I see a case

    I'll tell people to learn intuitive when they first learn F2L, but learning some algs later is definitely good. I know a guy who started with only algs, he just memorized algs for every F2L case. Watching him solve, I notice that he does every case from only one angle, which I believe is a consequence of completely skipping learning some intuitive F2L. In addition, he never learned look ahead. He averages like 16 now, and I think he can be sub-14/13 easily with his efficiency if he just reduced pauses. I'm helping him out now, but it's definitely hard to reverse if someone gets into alg-only F2L without trying intuitve at all.

    • @cyotheking
      @cyotheking  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      TheProgrammingCuber yeah intuitive is good. But people shouldn't use it as an excuse not to learn algs.

      Loic Gagnon Well, if you do 3 solves a minute, and spent 5 minutes working on what Chris just taught....you basically did 30 solves, which is NOT A good average. And I doubt you do 3 solves a minute, and you probably spent closer to 10 minutes reviewing what Chris said, at least....

  • @woowybaby3064
    @woowybaby3064 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    What helped me a lot is making a rule for myself where I have to solve my crosses in 2 seconds or less, and it’s not hard if I focus on making the cross good and now it’s cut 3-4 seconds off my solve times because my crosses used to be crappy.
    This fix is so simple and quick to do yet really helpful.

    Cool video! I do the "bad" way on 1:34 , however
    I have debated it with myself over and over, but come to the conclusion that I prefer to rotate. The moves from the "bad'" one just flows better, and is worth a rotation. The regrip you perform to do the "good" way is not any better than rotating, in my opinion.
    In theory I believe the "good" way is better in the long run, but I average sub-9 so I guess it's not holding me back. Enjoying the execution of an alg is also related to the success rate

    Hi, I wanted to make a point regarding your comments on intuitive F2l, I'm somebody who initially learnt F2l intuitively and I developed my F2l as far as possible myself however now that I am trying to break the sub 20 boundary I am beginning to learn algorithms, my point is this. If you learn F2l algs from the beginning it hinders your look ahead because you are less familiar with what F2l actually is, pairing edges and corners, think about it, it's hard to look ahead to pll whilst doing oll because you are performing an algorithm you don't fully understand, (for most cubers), if F2l is learnt like this it can affect look ahead. I'm speaking based on what I've seen with cubers I know,and of course from my own experience of learning and progressing with F2l, but I do believe there is an importance to initially learning F2l by intuition, and I think learning the algs should only be done later, when your own pairing methods can progress no further.

      Sure, I agree with that. I wasn't trying to say that intuitive F2L was bad. What becomes bad is when people use it as a crutch to NOT learn real algs for the cases that are bad. So many people ask me how to improve when they average 20 seconds claiming they have perfect look ahead and F2L algs (which is never the case). If it was perfect, they wouldn't average 20. I just see people using the intuitive thing as a reason not to learn algs.

    3. Instant F2L move

    i only know 4lll but Im sub 20, I find that spamming tps and a little lookahead is good, i still use intuitive f2l, also make all your algs muscle memory so while you are doing them you can look ahead

  • @G377
    @G377 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    Let me get something clear; I got sub 20 from mostly look ahead and trying algs at different grips/ angles, my f2l algs are actually disgusting, this goes to show how important lookahead is for those who neglect it. I know a lot of friends that use really good f2l algs but average over 23 seconds, they hesitate heaps and their lookahead is trash, they sometimes break their pairs when they put it in the back (lol). One tip that I’ll give you is that you should learn 2 OLL/PLL. This dropped my times from 23-25 to 21-19 and now that I’ve learnt them properly and improved my lookahead, I’m now averaging 14-18 seconds. Good luck to those who wish to be sub 20!

    What criteria are you using to determine if an algorithm is "good" or not? Move count? Ergonomics? Some further explanation would be much appreciated. Even if you just list some examples of good ones and bad ones and explain how you make the distinction between the two, that'd be helpful. Thanks Chris.

    Thank you for this video. I'm currently at a 23 second average and i suffer from every one of these 5 deadly sins. I also do cross on left during Cross/F2L, I was trying to learn cross on bottom because i know it's more efficient in the long run, not having to rotate the cube, but my average went up to 30 seconds. Got discouraged and went back to my old habits. Are there many/any top speedcubers that do cross on left or is it pointless?

    Hello Chris. I don't know if you will see this but if you do please answer my next question: "What cube should I buy? I have the guoguan yuexiao and I don't really hate it but I don't have any type of confidence with it in my solves. I tightened to the point where it can't do line to line unless you put extreme force. I put traxxas 50k like 3 times in this month and the first time I cleaned the pieces and it does feel smooth but its a bit slow and idk it has a weird feel. And I lock up a lot. I really struggle in f2l oll and pll. When I loosen it , the top right corner catches on the top center no matter what and other tensions that work just have terrible feeling. I want a cube that glides through that its really smooth and doesnt have too much tactile feel. I feel like its distracting for me and that doesnt lock up all the time. The valk 3 seemed like the perfect cube from what people said and what I want. But idk if I should w8 for the gts v2. Or did you try it and its not what I want. Thank you and have a great day!

    You're growing on me, Chris. Initially, you came across as a confrontational cubing sjw. As in, you seemed to call out some people for what they said (the one I'm quoting for this example is when a guy had a complaint about a cuber advertising the premium cubes too much and you mentioned something about a camel) but either way, your tips are most definitely helping me as a cuber. I'm kinda starting to like the in your face attitude that you sometimes have xD
