Same! I haven’t considered upgrading until now. after more than 5 years of intense use it is starting to show its age. Apart from the large screen and stereo speakers I feel like any iPad for sale now (even the 10.2 budget iPad) will feel like an upgrade though!

Yeah you said it, iOS really holds back the power of iPads. It's like these things are race cars and all we are allowed to do with them is go to the store to buy groceries. Apple needs to truly unleash their potential.

    • @Eeshka
      @Eeshka 5 ปีที่แล้ว +13

AgentStarke Sorry 3 months late but they’re slowly doing that and taking there time to optimize there full potential. If they do it right now it would have glitches and lag. Android for instance has that but it’s less secure and is easy to hack or jailbreak.

Late 2019 - My 12.9 gen1 iPad Pro often hesitates when typing with only 1 app running, battery life is down to a few hours if I’m not multitasking. YT runs through battery life quickly. I just plugged it in at 33% battery life and it instantly jumped up to 45%, then searched for iPad Pro vids. It’s a killer device [2015], but is showing its age.
I have background app refresh off.

Much brighter and better HDR, Dolby Vision, and DCI-P3 display... annnnnd that 120hz screen, .9 second pencil latency, much better speaker sound, USB-C, BT 5.0, A12X (Xbox One S graphics and much faster CPU), shoots 4K at 60 FPS, make the update WAY worth it and a HUGE difference. Good video, but saying that the update is minimal or not major is not quite accurate to say,

Thank you for an honest review and opinion. I have the 2nd generation iPad Pro 12.9 so I definitely will not be upgrading to the new 12.9. To offer an answer to your question as to why you need a device this powerful running iOS is the same reason you won't be upgrading. It is because having that power may mean overkill today but it will be still good enough 3-4 years from now. For me, this lets me know that the hardware is can withstand future updates of the software and last other 3-4 cycles of iOS = getting my money's worth.

I want the form factor of the 2018 iPad Pros! But, I'm still loving my 1st Gen 12.9 with Brydge 12.9 Keyboard (Let me say the battery lasts! I dislike the iPad disconnecting after 10 minutes if I take a break!) I finally added a screen protector because of fingerprints. Lag with the Apple Pencil didn't change, but it's always there... I'm waiting a year for the 2019 iPad Pro in 2020, while I wait on a 10.5-inch 2017 iPad Pro to arrive at my door.
I have to say, get the Brydge Keyboard! I always have my 12.9 attached to it, and it forces me to write, and writing is the main reason why I got the iPad Pro. The iPad Pro 12.9 allows me to use my 2012 MBPr 15-inch for video editing outside the house/office, while I manage Websites and TH-cam text.
I haven't gone into the world of photo editing, due to the restriction of iOS file management. But Pixelmator works almost identical to the desktop version (purchase separately but much cheaper than Photoshop!) For video editing; I can't get away from Final Cut Pro! I need chroma keying and multicam support!
The 12.9 is my second screen at home and I have one casual game: SImCity U Buildit. The Brydge keyboard is better than my Apple USB keyboard for typing fast... I would have been done moments ago!

Worst issue with iPad Pro's 1st Gen: Their batteries are now at the end-of-life. I know plenty of people who have the 1st Gen Pro's (because of work), and nobody can get a decent battery charge anymore. The charges range from 1 hour to about 3 hours. And of course the battery starts to die after our Apple+ subscription ends. Pro Advice: Get a new battery before your Apple+ subscription ends regardless if you feel you need it or not.

I've serious performance issues with my 1.gen 12"9 one now.
Multitasking is no longer possible because the RAM is constantly killing tasks when switching on apps.
Unfortunately, even the 4th generation now isn't worth the upgrade for me.
I rly hope that the 5th generation is getting finally an oled/ mini led panel, that the display finally improves.
And I hope that the resolution will also finally move upon.
Fair enough that 4k seems to be overkill for an Apple iPad, even though it actually would make sense on the 12.9" one.
But at least Quad HD which Samsung is using for years for their Galaxy phones would be a good compromise.
Watching 1080p TH-cam is honestly a shame for a $1k tablet, 1440p would then be quite legitim.

The wonder of where to put the pencil is silly. Even before i bought my ipad, i perfectly knew which case would solve it. Now, i dont think about where i should put it because theres a perfect space for it.

That’s why I purchased an Ottorbox cover at the same time I bought my iPad Pro 12.9 1st generation. Yes, it makes it thicker, but I have dropped it NUMEROUS times. So far after all of these years it has protected my iPad completely. As far as my iPhones 11 Pro Max, I purchased the Supcase brand. It has the Military protection, has a kickstand & is thinner than Ottorbox. With Ottorbox for iPad Pro & Supcase for phone I have no complaints on either purchase. I’m such a klutz!!! If you want your Apple logo to show then the Supcase for iPhone is NOT for you. The Ottorbox for iPad DOES show the logo. Neither matters to me. It means more for me to protect my devices being they were not cheap!! Thinking about the newest iPad Pro since I saw the commercial with the hummingbird. Can anyone give me advice on the newest Pro & protection for it? Thanks in advance!!

THANKS for your comparison. Now I know for sure that upgrading from my first generation does not get me a more usable device. I agree: no external hard-drive support ist extremely limiting for both models, and having a camera stick out is ludicrous. Cheers Andreas

I got rid of my iPad Pro 12.9 1st because the iso slowed it down I couldn’t take it anymore so I brought a 3rd gen iPad Pro 12.9 instead but to be fair I hate the home button now I have a iPhone X plus s Max so the new iPad is better for that.

It's funny that you/one regards the 1st gen as overpowered as it still runs well... Just shows what we have gotten used to with built in obsolescence! All phones should still run well after 4 years!

There’s one thing that Apple always excel in upgrading: THEIR OVERPRICING!
I love most things about my iPad Pro 12.9 first gen, which I’ve had since it came out!
It takes horrible pictures but it’s fast and it’s been holding up pretty well...and now that Apple released the Catalina update (13), we can even connect USB ports to it...it took them a while and though the first Catalina update had to be followed by a ton of other “13.” updates, it’s been pretty useful but not without problems.
Unfortunately, ever since I added a connective Logitech keyboard case to my iPad Pro first gen, it can only get about an hour of use before I must charge it again!
It’s October 2020 and I’d love to upgrade my iPad Pro 12.9 first generation but I couldn’t possible justify the investment when considering the cost and improvements of the latest iPad Pro models.
My iPad Pro camera is TERRIBLE! It doesn’t even hold up to my obsolete iPhone 5S camera, which takes FAR BETTER pictures than my iPad Pro camera does...the quality difference is ridiculous! The iPad Pro camera does worse than some toy cameras that my son had when he was a toddler!! That’s how bad this camera is! So it doesn’t surprise me that Apple figured out it was time for some major camera improvements...too bad they didn’t get that right from the first iPad Pro generation...I mean, it’s not like they don’t know what it takes to build good cameras in their devices...I guess they decided it’d make sense to give the most mediocre camera to their most prominent tablet, namely the iPad Pro. That’s so like Apple to do stuff like this...it’s like their keyboard case for the iPad Pro...it’s the most expensive iPad keyboard case in the market...it’s also the worst!
Like I wrote in the beginning...Apple is very good at upgrading their overpricing...they’re also very good at leaving us with very few options, if any, but to spend small fortunes in order to enjoy their devices. This is especially true when they decide to retire and declare as obsolete the older generation devices, which usually still work perfectly. It’s such a shame but that’s how they profit. What works well for them is to “sell apples” that we right away bite onto!

I have the second gen iPad Pro 10.5 that I luv and use everyday, but that new pencil and the charging is a feature I really want. Thanks for the video it helped take the thought of should I upgrade out of my head, not to mention this thing was super expensive. Plus I’m thinking I might leave the iPad next time, all the games are free to play/ online crap these days and still prefer to draw on my cintiq. Maybe I’ll go with those wacom pro tablets that are basically computer and a cintiq all in one.

6gb of ram on the new 1TB 12.9 for musicians is a huge reason to upgrade imho .. however the thin bezel edges has put me off from upgrading my 1st gen 12.9 Pro .. however my 12.9's screen has developed a very annoying bright spot a couple inches above the home button .. and apple want's $599.00 to replace the screen even though the issue is a known factory defect .. so I'm checking out these 3rd gens (and actually now looking at Surface Pro's) This video helped alot .. so thanks 👍

Doing some research in 2020. Question. My dad has a 2015 iPad Pro but the lcd is messed up so it would cost me $250 to fix. Is this worth fixing versus getting a newer iPad? I just need it for note taking at school and I’d probably get a keyboard to type papers. Mostly school stuff. Nice video!
