I don't understand how people can be such jerks. I have lived in my apartment for 20 years and it is still as clean and nice as it was the day I moved in. I've shampooed my carpets and repainted walls and ceilings and done many small, maintenance-type repairs without even bothering my landlord, who in turn never bothers me about anything. As long as I live here, this is my home and I take pride in keeping it nice so I can be comfortable and my friends and family members can visit and be comfortable too. With that being said, I know that neither anyone owes me anything, nor am I entitled to anything. I've had financial hardships in the past 20 years but I've ALWAYS found my rent money, because the roof over my head is more important than anything else.

Not to a good landlord. We appreciate our tenants and the ones who go above and beyond to take care of not only their apartment, but also will go beyond their necessary responsibilities and do things like pick up trash, tree limbs that fall and other things like that we reward them by giving them a year or two with no rental increases or dropping by and giving them a gift certificate of some sort to say thanks for being such a good tenant and helping us keep our property clean and safe.

Not only are they prompt when the squirrels come back and set up a program with an exterminator (once again) but they give little gifts and presents and keep the rent exactly the same as it had been before Covid. The early 80's were a really bad time for Pittsburgh and the general economy. I was laid off from my job and at that time I received $125 a week. My house payment alone was $500 Like everyone else I had other bills and a new car. After the 2nd month I sold my car and bought a hooptie because the most important thing was to have a roof over my head. I painted houses, scrubbed walls, detailed cars etc. just to keep going along with the savings I had. After looking for jobs and approaching the 6 month cut off for unemployment, I went back to DC to see if I could get back into the federal government. I was hired by another agency, put my Pittsburgh home up for sale and moved into a tiny apartment in Northern VA. You do what you have to do to keep a roof over your head.

You were far too nice! At my Apt complex, if you pay late even on the 2nd…. They charge you 10% daily and each day of doubles. The check out list is about 6 pages long! Vertical blinds are $8 a slat! It’s insane! My rent was $860 and jumped to $1600! As for a light out? $28 for each bulb! Leave a trash bag outside your door in the breezeway is $100 per bag fine! We have 24 buildings with roughly 30 Apts per building!
That being said, I’ve never in my life ever been late or not paid my mortgage or rent EVER! I can’t even imagine! Every Apt I’ve left I’ve left it cleaner and in better condition than the day I moved in. I had 4 letters from Landlords suggesting I not need to pay any deposit! I’m now 60. Had my first Apt in 12th grade in highschool!
I lose my Apt this fall. I can’t take another rent increase. It’d be more than I make. It’s breaking my heart because really my Apt is BEAUTIFUL! The grounds are stunning! I feel safe here. They just put a $200M expansion wing to a Hospital directly across the street! Walking distance. Currently I can’t find anything remotely close to this at any less. I don’t know what I’m going to go.
You sound like a wonderful guy and extremely nice landlord! Her sense of entitlement was disgusting! She really did just destroy her credit score! I’ve heard an eviction can be worse than a bankruptcy! My credit score was 822 when I moved here! SAdly because of health issues (Cancer and heart failure) I can’t work and some bills got paid late. But they got paid! Rent was not one of those. And like you said, You pay rent/mortgage FIRST! I had to let go of that 822 because there was nothing I could do. Worrying would only give me a full blown heart attack or stroke (had a stroke in 2008) but things were paid. The fact that she thought you owed her while smoking a cigarette & drinking beer was disgusting! Sent she had fake lashes and nails! Bet she didn’t spend on food for her kids either! They did this on purpose because you wanted her to pay the rent. Not right. I couldn’t be a landlord.

That apartment is not worth no 1000.00 I live in a much better apartment and only paid 300. That apartment is run-down and shabby.

It isn’t $1000.00 per month. $300.00 would only get people into government housing around here.

These are standard repairs that are made in the industry, I don't know why you would try to make this woman sound like less of a human for having to rearrange her entire existence for inability to pay rent she did have a 1000 $ deposit. There are such things that must be repaired and replaced before each new tenant in any event. You are indeed a queen of drama so tip your tiara.

They are not standard repairs. Fist holes in doors, throwing knives in the walls, shooting the refrigerator with BB guns, cigarette burns in 2 year old vinyl tile, broken cabinets, busted lights etc are NOT standard repairs. These are idiots trashing an apartment. You are ignorant to what standard repairs are.

No, if she isn’t paying rent and we are directing her to areas that will pay the rent for her and allowing her to stay while her rent is delinquent instead of evicting her we are the ones helping her keep her place. Most landlords will not be as kind as we are. Not to mention we allowed her to stay when we caught her smoking in the apartment and she snuck in a cat. Both were violating the rules and regulations that she was totally aware of, because she signed the form stating she read the rules and regulations we gave her. She was allowed to clean and paint the apartment after she was caught smoking and she got rid of the cat. We could have evicted her just for that. We should have gotten rid of her as soon as she broke the rules.
