I asked my mom a month before she passed away from cancer what her favorite song was and she said this one. I listen to it now in her memory since her passing 2 months ago and what once was already an emotional song, now has become a tribute to the greatest woman ive ever known. She remembered the long hot summer of 67 in Detroit where she was from. If you dont know what that is, google it. She was in California during the Rodney King trial and the riots that followed. She knew this song by heart. The history that woman had seen, growing up and always being taught to treat people how you would want to be treated no matter their color. It made sense to me when she showed me this song. She had great taste especially growing up around motown.
This album is an absolute masterpiece. He didn't sing about sex or love or love making on this . Just social concepts . It put me in deep thought. We need more albums like this. This is a gem. Timeless classic.
Every time I listen to this classic by Marvin Gaye, it brings tears to my eyes. I was two years old when this came out back in 1971. And just look at our world today 🙏. R.I.P. my brother Marvin 👊
I was a senior in high school in 1971 and my daughter was born a year later. Man, does this song bring back memories of great music and the conflict in Vietnam. That era had some talented songwriters. Marvin was at the top of the list!!
Brings me right back into the early 70's. My husband and I would listen to the sounds, over and over. Brings chills, and love to my soul, long forgotten. RIP Marvin Gaye. This sound will remain classic, for eternity.

I hate the fact we gotta give ourselves a color when we explaining ourselves as white or black. Marvin it’s no understanding still ✊🏽🥲 I love you all no matter what’s your nationality
I'm West African I heard Malvin when I was a teenager and now I have children I always tell them be careful children this song is still meaningful and I'm a living testimony.
Man as someone who’s was born way past Marvins time (26) I started listening to him heavy after my mom passed away. As he was a one of her favourite artists. I did’t really listen to him before. And 4 years later he’s been my most listened to artist on Spotify with like 150 total days listened. My friends can’t understand my obsession with this era of music. But His music really really changed my life and inspired me to pick myself up. Can not thank this man enough for all the albums and smoothness. Much Love
I'm one of the colors you mentioned and it does not matter which one, the song rings true and you are right that ALL of us could use a good listen to this message.
those colors are meaningless, how can you put people in a world of 200 nations and countless ethnicities into 4 boxes. It's not black, white, yellow and brown people who need to listen to this song. It's people who need to listen to it.
@@trident1125 your absolutely right I do understand your point. But I'm sure you understand what I meant . Hatred period is a awful . And a sin in God's eyes
Years ago there was a video on youtube with this song `What`s Going On` playing and in the background were different pictures and scenes of black men and white men working together showing respect and cooperation.
This probably is the greatest album of all time it’s just so true and resonates today just like it did 50 years ago, a timeless message of love and humanity. Plus the album just has perfect songs and it all rolls along so seamlessly. Marvin’s vocal deliveries throughout are just so passionate, you can really feel the soul he put into it
Misty it was more relevant back then. Back when this song was made, the Vietnam war was still happening and the police were worse. It was a time of a lot of hatred, ironic since before back in the 60’s, it was a time of love and peace. The hippy movement was at its all time highest, until certain events and ppl happened that damaged the movement and the wave finally crashed.
This is what's going on! From the beginning the government planted insurgents in every black neighborhood, usually your noisy weak-ass friends and some family members to convince you that you are not being manipulated so you can convince other's that everything is all right.
The musicianship behind this song is phenomenal. That bass and those strings send chills over me. Now, that is true talent, not to mention the background vocals. Marvin was a genius. He has blessed with musical talent.
Kwame Best I was privileged to have seen this man live more times than I can remember. He was a gentleman, a prayerful gentleman. A kind and gentle soul. I am truly blessed.
I was 27 years old when I learned the sad news that Marvin had died. Remember everyone, it was on Sunday evening. I got out my lps and played his 🎶. Then on Monday, I called out sick from work, in honor of him. I am 63 yrs old, and remember this like it was yesterday. We miss you Marvin😇
Remember my mother crying while washing dishes. I grew up not to far from his family home. I grew up in Baldwin Hills he lived west Adams neighborhood.
Oh, the Marvelous One..Today would have been Marvin's 77th birthday. (Apr.2,1939). And sadly, yesterday, April Fool's Day , was the 32nd anniversary of his murder. R.I.P my man. You were the best; the crowned King of the Motown stable, and one of the greatest singer/songwriter's of the 20th Century. Thank you for this SuperWhoopass.
This song aged like fine wine. War isn’t the answer and I wished war hungry politicians would hear this gem, especially with what’s going on today. Still relevant today!
War is not the answer. Damn right! "In the Year 2525 (Exordium & Terminus)". Yes, it will happen someday just like the dinosaurs. I can only hope the animals will be the only ones to survive. Animals only kill for survival, not ideology.
Thank you Lord for allowing me to live at a time when I was able to purchase this album when it came out and still enjoy it today. Thank you God that some younger people appreciate this down to earth cool man and embrace him. Marvin loved everybody. I do not have a record player today but I still have my 78's. Old School will know what 78's means.
I first heard this song when I was 10 years old and it really struck a raw nerve. It is so powerfully written and Marvin`s vocals are astonishing...and let`s admit it...the world he was singing about has not changed one bit has it?
No, it has "escalated" in fact but it will change (Revelation 11:18 & 21 :1-5) wait for it. Make a search for truth & "hold fast "!( 1 Thessalonians 5 :21)
What's Going On hits this old girl right in heart and soul. Takes me back on a time trip when I feel it's the 70s feeling all over again and I'm back to being a teenager. Gives me a natural high and pick me up when I feel the world has gone crazy. Still gives me good vibes and goosebumps just like when I heard it for the first time 53 years ago. The only song that makes me feel this way. Miss you Marvin.
sorry for your loss, I was 4 when my dad bought this album home back in 70' or so. he played the heck outta it. I'm lucky he's still here at 86. he taught me great music.
I was 16 when this song was released. It sent chills down my spine then... just as it still does today. This song and many like it contributed to the consciousness that got us out of the senseless Vietnam conflict. This was the point where I first started opening my eyes to the corruption that's out of control in this country today... the festering rot. Here's to hoping kids today can develop enough discipline to pull their eyes and mind away from the consuming social media and TRULY discover what life's about... the REAL stuff.
This is one of my grandfathers favorite songs him and his friends would listen to during the Vietnam war in which he was drafted at 18 years old. He just passed away 4 months ago and will remain my role model and guardian angel. Rest in peace grandpa
There's not too many songs that actually touch you emotionally but this is most definitely one of them. Moves me to the verge of tears each time its played

When I was a teenager in high school, my dad had all of his music, I would come home many days and lay in the floor with big earphones 🎧 on and listen to this whole album. I'll never forget where I was when I heard, when he had passed away it still hurts today 2023 loved this man and his Master Pieces. He is the real 👑 of R&B 4EVER 💕. Listening to it right now. Still BEAUTIFUL.
As a child listening to this song I could feel the depth of this song only in rhythm. As a black man I can now understand the depth of this song through my life journey.
I too listened to this as a teenager but I don’t think you have to be black to understand the depth of this song. This song is as relevant today as it was 50 years ago which is really sad as nothing has changed in the world.
Isn’t this the best?! Still rings true today. A profound song sung by a soulful gentleman. “Don’t punish me with brutality “. Love you Marvin. Right on. ✌🏻
What genius and so overlooked when this came out. The first I heard this song I knew it would last my lifetime and now forty-nine years later I still cry to hear this song.
Always fall into tears now when I hear this. Was the soundtrack of my life at the family BBQs while growing up in the 70s. And nahhhh, things haven't changed.😢
Was visiting LA last week and saw his star on the walk of fame. I had never been a primary listener of his music, but I know and appreciate the difference he made in the world. How much he meant to so many. Kinda like Bob Marley or Paul McCartney. Generational.
Got this album freshman year in college, 1969. We wore a hole in it. I was marching for civil rights, I still am. The song is more relevant now than ever!
Dear dragon meddler... You are very welcome. I also protested the Vietnam war from 69 to 73. I lost three good buddies. Still protesting also! Keep the faith!
I grew up listening to him. A white kid in the projects...The thing with this song is it's sad, angry and hopeful all at once. And it grooves on top of that! Marvin was amazing. One of the greatest records ever.
As a fellow white kid in the projects, I feel you. My stepdad was old school Motown and all this great music was always playing as I grew up. He was just all around soul. I can still remember eating ghetto burgers outside on a hot summer day listening to this shit as grease dripped from my hand. Ahhhh...memories...
I remember the first day this song hit the radio waves in NYC. I cried listening to Marvin sing. Some people of the world are doing things very wrong ... and they’re ruining it for the rest of us ... white, brown, yellow, red, Black Lives Matter too. We’re all in it together. WAKE UP!
Barry Gordy did not want Marvin to release this album. He fought against it because it was considered protest music. It was something Motown had never produced before to this level.
Do you know that Barry Gordy was discouraging him from writing the sociopolitical masterpiece?!?!?! But Marvin stuck to his guns, and wouldn't be dissuaded by Barry only wanting him to be a ladies man,and love singer for every record...God bless Marvin Gaye for this brilliance!!! 👏👏
And from what I’ve read Barry Gordy gave him a weekend to record the album with only a couple of days notice. Can you Imagine what it would have been had he been given more time!
@@juneharry4857 What it would have been June, what about the masterpiece that it is? Pressure busts pipes and creates Diamonds 💎 What a incredible Love emotion writer he was!!
Every time I sing this, I feel his spirit and the pain that he felt during this time. That lets me know that his spirit will never die. Rest on Marvin.
LOVE this and nobody sings it like he does. He makes this so beautifully powerful. The world should begin each new day playing this. Let's set a loving, compassionate and positive tone, let it ring through the entire world.
This is what got me through the Army in 69 / 71 and I met my wife of 44 years and we wish it was being played for the younger generation. This is true music!☘🍀
The album of the same name stands at No. 1 on Rolling Stone Magazine's new list, but this song is definitely one of the best songs ever. However you interpret it the message remains the same and that is to bring peace and understanding in the face of adversity.

Has anyone in Europe had 8 track tape ? I know only just some musicians and some music studios. p.s. here after LPs and mini LP comes audio cassetes.
So sorry for your loss ❤️

Years ago there was a video on youtube with this song `What`s Going On` playing and in the background were different pictures and scenes of black men and white men working together showing respect and cooperation.
This probably is the greatest album of all time it’s just so true and resonates today just like it did 50 years ago, a timeless message of love and humanity. Plus the album just has perfect songs and it all rolls along so seamlessly. Marvin’s vocal deliveries throughout are just so passionate, you can really feel the soul he put into it
Lol
I'm sorry Marvin.... It's still going on
Misty it was more relevant back then.
That's why it has to stop now is the time. We have suffered long enough!!
