  • An ex-SAR 25NC No. 3437 is seen hauling two freight trains on the branch line from Belmont to Douglass and on a part of the line Kimberley to Bloemfontein. A second part is dedicated to narrow gauge on the well known Sandstone Heritage Estate: an opportunity to watch a.o. NG/G16A No. 115.

    Love it! 25NCs are among my favourite locos! I lived in Douglas way back when I was seven and eight, and again in Alicedale (where the Sandstone Estate today uses part of the primary school building I went to in 1963 for their golf course). The old railway line out of Alicedale went past the bottom of the garden of the hotel we stayed in for a few months before my parents moved to Oudtshoorn. Your video brought back so many memories! Also as a child growing up in the veld -- amazing times!

    I'm just glad they're keeping the steam locomotives in service after decades of being good workhorses.

    Wunderbare Aufnahmen von einer sehens-und hörenswerten Lok (wenn man mal vom gewöhnungsbedürftigen Tender absieht). Genialer Glint vor 10:00, ganz großes Kino!

      Thank you for your nice comment. You are right : the tender is pretty ugly but its 80 cubic meters of water were really needed in this dry area.

    • @thejdmguru621

      @@KochersbergTVIt’s not ugly, I find it not only interesting, but also unique. Plus I’ve seen one before in person and realised how different the MY tenders look in real life compared to image.

    • @peterodell749
      @peterodell749 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      far from ugly. And for operating a higher water capacity, better rear view and easier to set for water under a fixed column. downside is tender brakes tend to drag once water critically low.@@KochersbergTV

    Glad you're back! A week or two ago I saw a short you uploaded with the first Garrett and the bus crossing the track. After I watched it and went back to the main page it gave an error saying it wasn't found. I was hoping that was an indication that you might have some new videos coming.
    A few years ago I took a ride on the Welsh Highlands Railway. I had not idea what type of engines they had. So, I was delighted to find it was a Garrett. About a 4 hour round trip. It was quite a treat.

    • @KochersbergTV
      @KochersbergTV  ปีที่แล้ว

      My video is recorded in HDR format. I needed to know what YT would be doing with that before I went along with the cutting. Hence this short, and somewhat disconcerting, appearance on the net. Even though I find the result a bit disappointing, I decided to continue with HDR. Having said this, if you like Garratts, you may wish to watch my Zimbabwe video (on Kochersberg TV), which shows Garratts, but this time on a broader gauge (Cape gauge, i.e. 3 foot 6). Quite impressive machines, I dare say.

    Beautiful sights and sounds....I can still hear the whine of the condensor unit fans when the 25's still had them when traveling through the Great Karoo condensing used steam back to water to make the extra distance without a water stop.

    Truly some great locos! Never knew SA still ran steam.
    Makes me want to visit even more.

    • @KochersbergTV
      @KochersbergTV  ปีที่แล้ว

      Actually, apart from Sandstone Estate, SAR do not use steam locomotives anymore. The trains have been chartered and the freight wagons were empty. This was however a faithful reconstitution of what freight trains looked like on these two lines in the 1990's

    • @ivanolsen8596
      @ivanolsen8596 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@KochersbergTV I would never have guessed the wagons were empty,
      the loco's seemed to be working hard, the drivers having the regulator
      and valves open wide, and the road being relatively flat.
      Should have guessed though, as the loco's were far to shiny to be full time working!
      Are they coal or oil burners? I couldn't decide on that.
      Once I have posted this I will be watching again, great stuff!!

    that is one heck of a tender
    And that garret is one leaky locomotive

    • @KochersbergTV
      @KochersbergTV  5 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I agree about the tender, the size of which is amply justified by the dry weather of the Karoo desert. Otherwise, this is not a Garratt locomotive, but "just" a Montain locomotive (4-8-2)

      On the narrow-gauge locomotives, the wheels are inside the frame and can hardly be seen. Leaks of steam and cold weather did not help in the visibility of the under frame of the locomotives... I can record videos but not make miracles.
