Tsukiji Fish Market Guide: Tuna Auction and Breakfast Odyssey

  • The world's largest fish market is one of Tokyo's biggest attractions.
Tsukiji is set to move to a new location soon so we went for a visit this month.
    ★ Tuna Auction 04:00 to 05:00
    ★ Outer Market 06:00 to 09:00
    ☆ Tuna Shop 08:00
☆ Make Your Own Breakfast 08:30
    ★ Inner Market 09:00 to 10:00
(Note: Photography and Video is prohibited inside the inner market until 09:00 every day.)
Why is Tsukiji Tokyo's biggest attraction?
Maybe it's because it's not a tourist attraction at all. This is a real market where many of Japan's best sushi chefs get their ingredients.
    It's raw and real.
Tsukiji is essentially a city within a city. It has its own way of doing things.
There are many rules to visiting Tsukiji.
You should wear long pants, boots (if you have them - the floor is wet and full of fish guts), and you should be considerate of people's privacy, especially the sushi chefs shopping. The security guards have no trouble tossing you out at the gate!
Photography is prohibited until 09:00 for privacy concerns. They are quite strict about this in the inner market.
    Breakfast:
Should you eat at Sushi Dai? If you like waiting in line to eat the same fish at restaurants all around the area, go for it! There is no quality difference between restaurants in the inner market and those on the outside - all the ingredients come from the same place.
We went into a stand in the outer market to see and yes, it was great!
No haggling / bargaining in Tsukiji. The price is the price.
Our guests for this episode are:
★ Greg Lane, founder and editor / writer for TokyoCheapo.com
    URL: tokyocheapo.com
★ Morita Hirobumi, head instructor for the Tsukiji Sushi Workshop
    URL: tsukiji-market.jp
★ Dru Tang, HinoMaple founder and Tokyo guide
    URL: hinomaple.com
☆ Special thanks to Masanori Numata for helping with the camera and also to Tsubasa Kaieda of www.tsukiji-market.jp for assisting on location.
    BREAKFAST:
Maguro / Tuna shop in the outer market is here:
    MAP: goo.gl/maps/H4Okl
Kaisendon tent with "Makase-don bowl" is here:
    goo.gl/maps/izkRx
Public eating area in the outer market (vending machines and tables) is here:
    goo.gl/maps/Z0xIJ
Uni and Hotate (scallops) were all purchased inside the inner market.
You can shop yourself in the inner market after 09:00 or go with a shop owner anytime. Because Morita-san guided us, we were allowed entry.
Please contact Tsukiji Sushi Workshop for ingredient tours of the inner market.
Places and shops change over time so please note these places in the video may not be there in the future.

Tsukiji Fish Market in Tokyo is a must-see stop on any visit to the city. This place is raw and real! A city within a city that has its own unique culture. From the queue for the Tuna Auction at 03:00 to a tour of the inner and outer market for breakfast, we'll explore Tsukiji and learn a little more about maguro, knives and the working culture of the world's largest fish market before it moves to Toyosu in late 2016. #tsukiji #tokyo #fish #market #100tokyo #cooljapan #onlyinjapan #tunaauction #sushi #breakfast #cheap

Definitely won't be visiting there after seeing that you have to wait at 3am and it's limited for first 100 people. Almost stupid to visit those place and eat tuna that is getting less every year.

Another amazing video. I really like the added effects you've been putting into your videos recently. I don't know if it's because I've recently watched the anime High School of the Dead again, but the first couple minutes at the fish market seemed eerie. Don't stop what you're doing!!!! And as always I'm looking forward to your next installment.

When I went in 2005, we just walked in at like 5am for the auction, there was maybe less than 30 tourist there, mostly foreigners. This was in May, and not a winter month either. I don't know if they made that place more tourist friendly, but you really had to pay attention, that place could be dangerous.

Eszra It will be much more organized and of course bigger! The world appetite for sushi has only grown but the space for the market has not. Hopefully it's not too touristy because one of the attractions of Tsukiji is that it is all business and very authentic -- but I cannot wait to do a follow up report on the new place in 2 years! Thanks for the comment! -John

asshhhhllleeeyyy143 So glad you liked it! This was one of the hardest to edit because I wasn't sure where it was going ... was it a guide? An experience? In the end, I just wanted to make it fun and let others decide what they see in it -- because at Tsukiji, there are so many options and places to wander, everyone has their own experience. Glad you enjoyed! Thank you for watching and commenting. -John

WAORYU ONLYinJAPAN You definitely succeeded with whatever you attempted to do! I felt like I was part of that trip (minus the yummy food eating huhu) and it was a nice experience watching it and walking through it with you guys! I also want to mention how the video was actually really comprehensive despite not being more than 15 minutes long. I am definitely going to watch out for more videos like this and more videos in general from you. :) Thank you for taking time to reply to my comment by the way, it was a nice surprise since I've been subscribed for a while now.

Amazing video! Are you just a TH-camr?? You should be a NHK producer!! Your works are very professional and really educational. Thank you so much. I can't wait for next ''Wasabi'' adventure.

Vreede Anna Thank you! I was a regular reporter on NHK World's Tokyo Eye program but have no problem with being a "TH-camr" and part of the internet broadcast revolution. Anyway, this show is part of a TV show in California and Singapore and maybe other places too -- so we get some on air time :) Wasabi Farm was so much fun! Can't wait to show that one. -John

I think tsukiji is the most famous place for common folks like us to learn of the food product and restaurant buyers' experience.

We tried to get into the auction today (2016-09-15), here are some learnings:
    - these days the registration starts at 2:00am
    - 120 people get in
    - the group was full at 2:45am, we got there at 3:20am :(
This might be just today, but consider checking it before. My guess is, that since the time the video was shot, the process changed.
