I'm really glad to see that you've launched your own channel. As a neuroscientist currently acting as a scientific editor/consultant for multiple companies around the world, I'm about to do the same but have continued to feel like I don't have enough time given my work obligations. You're a testament that it can be done, even when heading your own lab at Stanford. Incredible. Kudos. I've enjoyed your neuroscience-based conversations on various podcasts, including a piece in which you discussed work from Misha Ahren's lab on glial suppression of unsuccessful behavior; Misha did his postdoc in the same lab (Engert Lab) where I did mine at Harvard. Looking forward to your future podcasts! Cheers.

Thank you for the feedback, and for the work you do. I know Florian well. He is a true original and a great scientist. Reach out/consider me a resource whenever it is that you are ready/have bandwidth to bring your formal training into the public sphere. I suspect your current work will augment your formal training and bring about new avenues for people to learn... which is really what it is all about. -Andrew

@@hubermanlab Much appreciated, Andrew. Yes, Florian is one of a kind and his name brings a smile to anyone who has ever met him. He's as much a great person as he is a great scientist, which is evidently true for you as well since your character shines in the many podcasts in which you've appeared. I'm sure that your perspective as a principle investigator will provide a much-needed niche for getting people excited about learning neuroscience here on TH-cam, as you've already showcased on Joe Rogan and elsewhere. Yes, my current work is serving as a nice complement to my formal doctoral/postdoctoral training, and it enables me to contribute to and stay on top of hot-off-the-press studies by providing evaluations of manuscripts in preparation-some of which have since been published in or are currently under review at high-profile journals (e.g., Nature, Science, Cell) akin to those that your lab and Florian's lab publish in regularly. I appreciate your invitation as a resource and I'll plan to reach out once I have a workflow established for posting videos. Also, fantastic job on introducing foundational principles in this video!

This man made me want to start college for neuroscience. I have kept a 4.0 the last 2 years. I was expelled 5 times in hs. Yes 5 times :/. ( from alternative school once, so twice in 11th grade). It was safe to say I hated school and was completely wild. I would have never gave school another shot if it wasn’t for him, but listening to him made realize that I actually love to learn. These podcasts have changed my life! I've spent the last 15 years drinking 6-8 beers every day after work and thinking nothing of it but after listening to the detrimental effects it has on the body and brain plus the potential it has to cause cancer I immediately stopped drinking and haven't had a drink for about 2 months now. I wish I had this information earlier in life and why is this not being taught in school! I am now powering through all these podcast's from the beginning and I'm up to number 19 I believe "Supercharge Exercise Performance & Recovery with Cooling" I am now addicted to learning, I listen to around 2 podcasts per day while I am working. I love the fact that I am being taught the science behind these tools and how they help the body and brain, if I am just instructed to do something my first question is always "why?". The knowledge and tools that I have acquired so far from these podcasts have been amazing! I feel super human compared to the person I was before this. Thank you so much for making this information available to the masses, I think everyone needs these tools and knowledge available to them.

Hey Andrew, here's "10 Episodes I'd Love To See":
1- "the neuroscience of dreams" (what causes them, what function do they serve, what their content suggests about our psychology),
2- "the neuroscience of music" (why are we compelled to listen to it and create it, what is occurring neurologically when a musician is in flow state, why can some dementia patients remember song lyrics long after become otherwise non-verbal, etc).
3- "the neuroscience of depression" (how much is nature vs. nurture? what methods beyond pharma drugs can reverse it? what distinguishes situationally logical sadness from true depression?)
4- "the neuroscience of sociopathy/psychopathy" (how much is nature vs. nurture here too? what personality characteristics are key indicators that some might miss? can it be reverse or at least lessened? if so, how? how can power hierarchies such as companies guard against selecting for these traits? can these traits be detected with visual analysis or diagnostics within neuroscience?)
5- "the neuroscience of predictive diagnostics" (can modern neuroscience tools identify the interests and talents a child will thrive at as an adult? can they identify future criminals before they act? can early detection of personality characteristics more easily be reversed? do you fear predictive diagnostics in the hand of dystopian leadership in terms of social engineering?"
6- "the neuroscience of extraordinary abilities" (this would be an episode that focuses on "Rainman"-like autistic/savante capacities, as well as extraordinary medical cases, such as a person of normal abilities that after a brain injury became a math genius, etc. a deep dive into how both inborn and injury-induced neurochemical and neurostructural oddities have resulted in capacities that truly astound).
7- "the neuroscience of the paranormal" (this would examine plausible neurologic explanations for the most well documented near death experience cases, the type of complete ego death and mysterious "contact"-like phenomena of 5meo-DMT journeys, empirically plausible explanations for psychic abilities or premonitions, etc. an episode that explores the outer fringes where neurologic hypothesis reaches the threshold of the unknowable)
8- "the neuroscience of addiction" (what causes it, what ends it, how does one form of addiction differ from another, etc)
9- "the neuroscience of intelligence" (what is intelligence? is intelligence better thought of as one thing or living in many forms? if many, what are the foundational forms? how useful or problematic are IQ tests? what forms of intelligence do they measure well and measure poorly? what psychometric tests do you trust the most to get a read on someone's brainpower and genera neuroogic profile? can it be increased or decreased?)
10- "the neuroscience of nutrition" (what foods are helpful to brainpower? which ones diminish brainpower? how useful is fasting to spike mental performance? what nootropics supplements are worth taking? what to look for in a good nootropic stack? what recreational substances like alcohol, cannabis, etc are detrimental to brain function?)

    Thank you, Prof. Huberman.
    My modest round-up:
    * nervous system runs based on
    sensation - perception - emotion -
    thought - action.
    * nervous system operates in 2 modes:
    reflexive (bottom - up)
    deliberate (top - down).
    * we can change our sensations, perceptions, emotions, thoughts, behaviors by navigating our attention in top - down mode.
    * controlled top - down mode is associated with agitation and strain as it suppresses established neuro circuits.
    * top - down control is entry point to neuroplasticity (ability to change neuro connections) and focuses on duration - path - outcome.
    * neuroplasticity is governed by sleep(circadian) and alert (ultradian) rhythms.
    * dirty secret of neuroscience: learning (neuro wiring) happens AFTER deep work (ultradian cycle top performance) DURING rest, i.e. sleep or non sleep deep rest (NSDR).
    * mastering transition between sleep and focus phases is key to effective learning.
*neuromodulators that play major roles in neuroplasticity:
    epinephrine (formed in brain stem)
    molecule of alertness, increased
    attention, agitation)
acetylcholine (formed in forebrain) molecule of particular bright spotlight; acts like a highlighter, tagging/marking alerted neurons so they are strengthened and more active in future.
    Hope it helps💕 error check/feedback is welcome😊

I've used a wobble board (balance board) for several years. I'm 71 - my eyesight, specifically my left eye, was deteriorating. Just to experiment, I started balancing with my eyes closed, then with my left eye open, then both eyes. I noticed that the images perceived from my left eye, were becoming clearer. This motivated me to continue. I've just renewed my driver's license and both of my eyes tested at 20/20. FYI, I've had a 'glasses' restriction on my license for all of my driving life up until now. There are many, many other benefits that I've reaped through using the balance board - on some level, it's like I've 'tuned up' my body via strengthening my core. Perhaps this might be something of interest for a further podcast, i.e. how 'body balance' affects all of our systems and how we can take advantage of tools to improve our balance.

Putting it all together (main points of function of the nervous system - We change what we sense by changing our environment and the things we allow to enter our environment and where we elect to go. Then we use our attention and control of perception to perceive the aspects of what will allow us to move towards our desired way of living. Having control of neural modulators allows us to have certain control of the feelings/emotions that we feel and therefore the access to certain highly active or diminished neurons due to the effect of neural modulators in the process of activity. We can also control our thoughts in a very deliberate way through auto-suggestion as well as have reflexive thoughts based on the present, past and predictable future. Action is then the by-product of all of these other functions of the nervous system that is actually able to make an imprint on this Earth. So the question is: How do we ensure that our nervous system is functioning optimally in the first 4 functions in order to create the action that we want to be able to take to achieve our dreams and aspirations?

Andrew, you seem to be engaged in a process of operationalizing what we have/are learning about the nervous system. Theoretical and academic knowledge is of course important. However, making knowledge available and actionable is what can often make the most difference. It is, as you say, actions which leave their mark in the human fossil record and by operationalizing this information in such an accessible fashion you are making it a "final common pathway" for many minds. Kudos. Keep it up if you would.

I've debunked 4 really strong myths I've carried for the longest time, these have affected my ways of thinking about and doing things, and making sense of things that mattered (and gave me suffering in trying to compulsively hold them true when it seemed otherwise). They are:
Our feelings/thoughts/emotions/perceptions are actually not carried forward. I've placed undue importance so far.
    2. We cannot multitask. (Gonna redirect some people to you, Dr. Huberman)
    3. Actions are the final common pathway. My most favourite.
    4. Thoughts can be deliberate!
Took the free will illusion a little too seriously. Until I de deliberately decided to think about pancakes. And viola!
Derived some real world value from this. Really excited to see what this shift of massive potential brings to me.

Neuroscience is definitely a topic which hasn't received enough attention and even when it has, it hasn't been packaged in an easy to understand way, such as the way you're doing it. So well-done and thank you! If I can add just one suggestion for your youtube videos it would be to include some diagrams, animations, graphics, etc of the content you are describing (I know you do that on instagram already). A COMMENT!? Good lord man! This is not possible for I have MANY!! All good things, and also questions and clarifications. For example; I am 35 this year, IV not ever excelled in anything except perhaps being excessively happy and perhaps being able to work in a bar in any state and make sure no one leaves without a smile. Ie: hospitality. ( Also can cook up a storm, but checking is a thankless job to put it lightly). Never been one to understand big words, nor numbers but was always able to comprehend/judge/learn/adapt in any situation IV found my self in, and can work out the change to three seperate drink orders at one time..... Due to my "bubbly" personality, some physical birth defects, and people's fear or dislike of change, over the course of my life, EVEN though IV had the blessing of loving parents, and 2 big brothers ( I had 3 but sadly my oldest past away when he was 11, I was 4) I'd come to believe, that this tiny but ever present belief that I was 'different' and that really I was actually quite capable of comprehending and or solving big issues, was wrong. And over my life it got quieter, till a couple of year ago, a series of unfortunate events made me listen. And since then I think IV unknowingly been doing these things IV been listening to you talk about.!!!! I feel like I'm a sponge soaking up your words but I'm not big enough. Thank you! Because I found you when I was very much ready to give in. And since listening to you and also revisiting the courses IV taken part in via my old work. Hehehehehheheh, oooooo I'm excited. So thank you. ✌️

Hi Mr Huberman, great class, only discovered you today, August 2024, but will go back to your videos, from January 2021. One question: you mentioned that certain animals move around as they sense a magnetic field. What about us humans in terms of magnetism. Is it correct to say that if we are going through negative emotions, experience negative thoughts, we attract more of the same to us? And to get out of this whirlpool we have to change our thoughts and feelings, even if they are not correct/real to change what we attract. Thank you for your reply

    Commenting the Information/Notes for Myself
Profess= have or claim knowledge or skill in (a subject).
Contextual = depending on the preceding or following parts
    Cuing = Prompting, Hinting
    Neuron = Nerve Cells
Synapses = Connection between the Neurons
Hippocampus= Memory (Patterns of Neurons firing stored)
    Brain = Map of Experience.
Nervous System = Brain + Spinal Cord + Connection to the Organs.
Continues Closed Loop (Like Mobius Strip).
-It governs all other systems of the Body and get affected by them.
Speech and Language are controlled by Separate Portions of the Brain.
    Neurons States
    - Electrically Active + Release Chemicals(called Neuro-Modulators)
    Works of the Nervous System
    1. Sensation
    2. Perception (Spotlight of Attention)
    - Ability to take what we are Sensing and make Sense of it
    - Covert Attention = Split Attention into Two
    3. Feeling/Emotions
    - Products of the Nervous System
    - They are Reflexive
    4. Thoughts
    - Can be Reflexive or Deliberate
    5. Actions/Behaviors
    - Types of Actions
    5.1 Reflexive
    - Central Pattern Generators
    - e.g. - Walking without paying attention to it
    5.2 Deliberate
    - When Something is done with Deliberate Attention we analysis three things which are Duration, Path & Outcome
    - Alcohol Suppresses the Deliberate action so Reflexive action and thoughts are surfaced (Frontal Cortex which is the newest addition to life's Brain is used to suppress Reflexive action and thoughts- E.g. would be children who don't have it developed cant sit still).
    Neuromodulators (Levels - Normal/Less/High)
Neuromodulin Receptors take the particular Receptor and consequently next process is run.
    1. Dopamine - Molecule of Reward/motivation
    - makes some neuron circuits more active and others less active
    2. Serotonin
    - Makes us feel really good with what we have.
    3. Acetylcholine
    - Creates more intense and focused perceptual spotlight (Highlighter marker)
    - Makes some Neurons active much more than rest
    4. epinephrine
    - Creates Increased Attention
    - Heightened Alertness
    5. Adrenaline/Norepinephrine
    - Makes us agitated
    Nervous System Aspect
    1. Reflexive/Calmness System
    - Automatic Mode
    - Nervous System wants to pass as much as things to Reflexive Mode
    - Feels Easy
    2. Deliberate (* Opposite of it is Sleep)/Alertness System
    - Manual Mode
    - Focus Attention (Needs Effort and Strain)
Ability to Change Nervous System(Adaptive Neuroplasticity = Strengthening of Synapses)
    - Two phase process (Deliberate + NSDR & Sleep)
    - When we engage in deliberate action Neuromodulators Engage which in turn creates agitation
    - process by which Neurons can change their connection and way they work so that thing becomes deliberate to the Reflexive.
    - Up-to age of 25 kids can Learn passively, they don't have too work to hard focus too hard.
    - Adult Brain can change with response to the Experience.
    - Plasticity in adult Brain is gated/controlled by the Neuromodulators.
    - In Traumatic/Terrible/Challenging events (Something bad happens) there is release of Neuromodulators
    - We can change the Nervous System which means brain can change itself.
    - No Neuroplasticity occurs during Learning or Strong Events, It occurs when we are in sleep or Non-sleep Deep Rest [NSDR]
(Study suggest it occurs better if after intense things 20 minutes NSDR which accelerated Neuroplasticity)
As per the Timing of the Day focus changes
    - We go from alert to Deeply calm
    1. Circadian Rhythm (Circa = about the Day)
    2. Ultradian Rhythm (Throughout the Day)
    - 90 minute Rhythm
    - We are Optimized for 90 minute Cycles.
    - First 10-20 minutes we are less focused then its better and after 90 minutes we get out of focused state.

Thank you for these teachings, Andrew 🙏 Amazing content!
Regarding multitasking, it is said that humans cannot multitask efficiently because we can't do two or more task that require our full attention, which is true. We can drive and talk because we do not need to be fully focused on our driving; most of it happens on autopilot because we have developed a habit. On the other hand, we cannot compose an email and have a conversation with a co-worker at the same time; our attention has to "take turns" or to prioritize the information being processed.
We humans have some sort of "background service" that helps us to prioritize our focus, in an operating system fashion, but it is not multitasking. We could say that we only have a "single processor" for tasks that require our full attention.

Don't do a bachelors, that information you can find online. Enter a research based graduate program and do a research project. Even if you have 0 experience you can enter as a master's student at some places as long as you find a supervisor that will have you.

Dr. Huberman, I want to say that I appreciate everything you do what you are doing and how you are doing it. I only graduated high-school but I have always been fascinated by neural science. The way the mind works. I love to tune into the way I'm feeling and try to understand why I feel the way I do and also what made me feel that way. Every time I hear you talk on podcast I get this feeling of mutual understanding that I didn't know existed. So I cry. And what I am trying to understand is why I cry? I completely immerse and every time you come across something I thought only I knew I cry. I'll figure it out in time I guess but again, the way you deliberately explain what you know, to me is impressive. Thank you 👍

So excited this podcast is live... And like every podcast I'll probably listen to it on 1.5x speed, but I noticed that listening that way sometimes causes a bit of mental stress. I was curious if there have been any tests that show if the speed of speech affects the state of the listener (maybe his rate of breathing to match the speaker) and if that is so how much is it from hearing the fast speech and how much from seeing the lips move fast.

I experience anxiety when hearing super fast speech (like the sped up disclaimers at the end of radio commercials, for example). I don't think it's a visual thing, for me.

Absolutelly great. Doing notes all the time. Can't wait to get more practical insights. Is ther a way to dig deeper and have questions answered?
    - Dp 90 minutes cicle goes continuous or is it best lenght of activity but it is up to us when we start next cicle?
    - If I do mental work, programming or learning, should I aim for 90 minutes and for example yoga nidra in between?
    - Can I nautrally increasse Norepinephrine?
    ...

My take on this would be take a short break every 90 mins ( some people might need a 5 mins break within the cycle) to do Yoga Nidra and start another cycle. I would think that on an average day 4-5 cycles of focused 90 mins work is what most people can do.

    • @tomaszszyrowski9921
      @tomaszszyrowski9921 3 ปีที่แล้ว

@@sahanaravindranath5777 do you think 4-5 cycles of 90 minutes is possible?
I track my work time for years now. When started, rarely did more than 2 hours of "real" work. Now I can do just under 5 hours but exhausted after.
5x90 would give 7.5 hours, doubt it is possible in the long run

    • @sojobotube
      @sojobotube 3 ปีที่แล้ว

As far as i know, when you are learning You should take a short brake every 30min. (more or less). In other cognitive activities breakes don't need to be taken so often.

    • @tomaszszyrowski9921
      @tomaszszyrowski9921 3 ปีที่แล้ว

@@sojobotube yes, most people say so. I think it is not so straight forward.
For a couple of years I used pomodoro. It actually make things worst. I think theories like Kotler's about getting into flow are very powerful.... But you can't get into flow in 30 minutes to break for five and again. From my experience it makes very bad habits.
