    I’m a disabled 20 year retired veteran and I can say after reconstructive knee surgery the ultrashift is much better for my left knee. I can float gears with the best of em, but you gotta come to a stop at some point.

    Another thing to everyone who sees your videos, I recognize you are not the typical salesman. Whether it was Tim Ghorley or others, everyone highly recommends you and your finished products. The service and ability to be reached after the sale must be second to none. The thought put into what you sell, from extra insulation for extreme temps, to arctic wrapped fuel lines and problem free Davco fuel filters speaks volumes. Long story short, you know your shit and must be good to deal with. That's not common in today's world. It seems once the taillights disappear, that's the end usually. Oh, and crankin' out bitchin' trucks doesn't hurt either. Kudos to you and your men who work for/with you.

Taking your mind of of one thing like knowing which gear your in our shifting up or shifting down or pushing in the clutch or letting the clutch out. Man this is a big weight off your mind. Concentrating on traffic is number one.

    I can appreciate and understand why people choose manual or automatic transmissions. Everyone has a reason for liking what they like. Doesn’t matter what transmission you have, if you have a sleeper or a day cab, ant eater front end or square, drive a kenny or a pete. We’re all out there with a love for the road and the satisfaction of backing into a tight spot.
    Drive safe, give a wave, blow the horn for the arm pump, and never stop hauling.

    I’ve been in a 10 speed automatic now for just about three years, pulling tankers through the Sierras and the Cascades. My only gripe is when I get to a customer on rough ground, I have trouble with traction. I would buy one of these in a heartbeat if it wasn’t for my application being in agriculture and feeling like I would get stuck. I am very glad that these automatics are coming to main stream, they are remarkable when ran correctly and given a chance

    If a automated manual is your thing that’s fine. However, if they’re going to do that they might as well put the gear selector on the turn signal arm like on the 579. Just do away with the pedestal in the floor all together.

    Steve I worked 30 years for Iowa DOT on highway maintenance and in that 30 years I drove many trucks which where anything from a five and four , ten speed, thirteen, eight speed and four and six speed automatic and my last truck was a 10 speed auto shift which was by far the best transmission/truck I ever ran. It was programmed just right and worked beautiful for all task including plowing and ice blading snow! If I ever bought a truck for hauling short distance/local it would be the Ten auto shift and 18 speed auto shift over the road. Tell your customers to drive one before giving up on a Auto Shift !

    If you played baseball, your batting average would be through the roof! You continue to knock them out of the park. As far as the automated 18 goes, some like them and have a reasoning for them (as you said), some don't. While not my cup of tea so to speak, I truly understand the need and desire. Regardless, it's still a beautiful flippin' truck! People need to realize that. Keep on keepin' on Steve. I don't know how long this Coronavirus thing will last, but DOT just suspended the hour limits for truckers, Maybe the EPA should suspend the emission requirements on trucks so they're more reliable and the truck builders should put out some less expensive no frills rigs, so more people could get on the road and get the job done, cause chrome don't get ya home. Just saying.

But I tell you what, after about six months I got to liking if quite a bit. In stop and go traffic they are great. Subsequent models the shifting got MUCH improved. I agree with what you said. Just let it go guys. To each their own.

    Is there a difference in fuel mileage between the automated and manual

    • @hawki5120
      @hawki5120 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It's kind of hard to say because how you drive the manual makes a very big difference. The automated will shift consistently for fuel millage. If your careful shifting the manual there pretty close if you feel the need to rap it out to 2100 RPM before you shift and floor it coming up to a long climb the automated will eat your lunch.

    Does going automated add more to the cost of the truck?

  • @theirishman8356

    Auto shift is much better. No more blown out knee from being stuck in crawling traffic. My second rig was a paddle shift. Havent drove a manny since.

  • @FlyboythaACE
    @FlyboythaACE 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I know people give you shit about these automatics. But coming from a guy has been shifting 19 years when I'm at a place where I can spend that kinda money on my dream rig I'm probably not going to miss that metal rod protruding through the floor board. It won't make me less of a super trucker or your build less of a super truck.

    What confuses me is trucklines claim the new automatics get them better fuel economy for the whole fleet but when you buy a car they tell you to go standard shift if you want maximum fuel economy

    • @victoryrider
      @victoryrider 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I think with the advancements in automatic transmission today a manual can't compete. In these big trucks it's still a manual transmission it just has a computer telling a box on the transmission what gear to go in.

    • @murdoch9106
      @murdoch9106 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Modern automatic transmissions what ever type is so fast now that its almost impossible to beat them with a manual unless you're some kind of shifting god.
      Less power interruption means more power to the ground and less throttle input to make up for the potential loss of drive during a shift with a manual.

    • @SteveCarbone
      @SteveCarbone  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Excellent question. In a big truck a manual will always get better fuel economy but you need a well skilled veteran operator to make it happen. If you dont have that, and most all mega fleets dont, the auto is their saving grace. In a street car the horsepower that the automatic transmission needs burns fuel, a manual in that situation is very forgiving even with a sub-par operator so thus better fuel economy.

    I have the 13 speed automatic. The only problem is the tower is in the middle of the floor. Why Peterbilt doesn't place the auto shift on the steering column I don't know.

    • @SteveCarbone
      @SteveCarbone  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Column not an option in a 389, seat, dash, and console are the 3 options

    I got into it on a Facebook group, because it such a discussion on who is a "real" trucker driver if the drive a manual versus an automatic. I just don't know what the big idea is. Aren't we all truckers? Just drive what you feel comfortable with period.

    I just Peterbilt would stop using that hideous selector tower on the 389. The 579 and 567 have a selector on the shifter column which opens up that floor space. I guess I would think that Peterbilt would improve their flagship model with something better looking.

    Thank you for another great video and for mentioning the rear gear set. I have a question for you that no one seems to want to answer. With a rear gear of 3:25 like you said and and 18 speed with a last ratio of .72 or .73 probably, does that make the over all final ratio approximately 2.25?
