He improvised his way from F major to E minor seamlessly without surprise. I'm not sure how many will pick up on this but it's a feat of genius.

A major chord can progress to any major or minor key. By changing from F major to E minor he is really shifting the tonal key from F to G (since Eminor is the relative minor of G)

So he sprung fully formed, like Athena from the brow of Zeus? Come on, he put a lot of effort into improvisation. It's a matter of practice too, not just innate ability.

korean shinebox in fact, he IS capable of improvising masterfully. He is a genius

@@Francispia Why are you implying that I thought he wasn't good at improvising

@@galek75 his genius might be something like Athena from the brow of Zeus. Why not? Sure, I read that you think he puts a lot of effort. My point is that it is very possible that he doesn't put "a lot" of effort and his improv just flows out naturally.

The transition from Mozart to Beethoven was incredible! The contrast in Beethovens intensity to Mozart was amazing

Based on a cursory listen, he appeared to play this [part of a] concert on the same fortepiano, and based on 27:25, where is able to reach A6 / a''', the model used appears to be one from the early 1810's at the latest. I've only heard one recording of the Beethoven Op. 90 on fortepiano (Brautigam on a quite Romantic-sounding McNulty 1819 Graf), so this is a wee shock

Good ear! The fortepiano is a McNulty replica of an 1805 model by Walter & Sohn.
