Stumbled onto a few videos, and I gotta say, you're my hero. If I had followed my father's career I'd have become a radio engineer, and then likely had my own electronics repair store at some point after leaving service. I'd definitely end up just as sassy as yourself. Keep up the awesome videos, I have enjoyed watching The Ben Heck Show for my nerdy tech and engineering fix, but now I'm gonna keep an eye on your videos as well!
I had macbook 2012 after coca cola damage :p After cleaning, soldering new display connector I had problem with one usb port. 4 hours of thinking, measuring, searching the web. I found this wideo. Who has recored it? of course Louis Rossmann. In my case voltage was good, after connecting power bank, current was ok, only problem with communication. Like Louis sad "it isn't something like too much flux". Yes, works for me. A bit more flux and more hot air. Macbook is perfectly working. Thanks for next great wideo. (and sorry for my bad english)
Love your videos man. Detailed enough for for us to understand what your trying to achieve, but also not filled with all the boring shit either. Straight to the point. Great work!!!
Hey Louis, could you please if possible, make a video on upgrading soldered ram on a laptop motherboard. Many forums say it is possible although very hard. Thanks, your content is great btw
HI Louis i have been watching your videos for about 3 months and i need to say great job i have learned so much more from you. i wanted to know if you could point out where you get your flux and solder from please. Yes i say solder :P am from Canada. Great work keep it up !
I've had 2 macbook pros (2011 and 2012 15") where the usb port closest to the SD card doesn't work. Is it a problem with Apple's design? I haven't damaged either of them, but I did get both of them used.
After your put your soldering iron on the board, it looks like a bunch of brown liquid comes out... Looks like dirty water. What is that? Also, what is the whiteish paste you're putting on? Do you need to clean them up after the work is done, or do they eventually come off themselves (or does it just stay there forever and isn't harmful?)
The brown stuff is the flux from inside the solder coming out. The white stuff he puts all over the component is also flux. It helps clean the joint and make the solder flow into the pad better. You don't really need go clean it up you could get away with leaving it. But it's best practice to and anyone doing this sort of stuff would clean it
What college classes (if any) do you recommend for this kind of stuff? I imagine that this kind of repair is only the tip of the iceberg. This is really cool. Your vids are very entertaining.
Looking up "macbook board" on Aliexpress returns quite a few results. You'll have to do some hunting to find the faulty ones, which are WAY cheaper than the fully functional ones. www.aliexpress.com/wholesale?catId=0&initiative_id=SB_20160524181710&SearchText=macbook+board
Hey bro, My 15" MacBook Pro usb ports are not working to well, when i plug drives into them they sometimes don't recognize them. Then at other times i'll plug my iPhone into it and it just keeps turning on and off. Do you do repairs? can i send you my computer to be fixed? Or do you recommend anyone i can send it to so i can have it fixed?
Hey Louis, Do you know if the FLUKE 15B+ would be a good choice for logic board repair? I need a multimeter and the 15B is discontinued from what i can see Thanks.
After watching your videos, Ive changed my ways and wont be taking the AIR into the bathroom or anywhere near liquids (coffee/tea/softdrink/water in general) You would have thought apple by now would have liquid proofed their gear by now! Im not saying its perfect but damn, a splash and a few stray drops of water while doing anything in range of a apple is bad jojoo!
Hey Louis, I have a quick question. I have an early 2011 13in mbp i5 model. Someone spilled soda on the keyboard and it was apparently only contained to that part. Checked the logic board, cleaned it, everything seems to work just fine. Except the keyboard lighting is dead except for in the center. I can either 1.) Remove the keyboard and peel back the reflective layers and clean them. 2.) Order a new keyboard. 3.) Soak the keyboard assembly in isopropyl alcohol. I'm guessing the third option wouldn't be ideal. Any suggestions? Thanks.
IF your keyboard fully works, just peel the backlit and its reflective layers out and thoroughly wash it in warm/hot water, it works best when it comes to sugary spill, sopropyl alcohol not anywhere near as good as hot water. I do it all the time. Good luck!
Do not use heat gun or you'll melt the top plastic layer, layers are attached together with double sided tape, just gently start peeling from one corner, use a tweezers if needed, i generally grab and remove all layers together from keyboard itself. Once you've got it, then separate them and wash in warm/hot water
just buy a new kb and kb backlight,t he trouble you will go through screwing with it isn't worth the effort IMO. I see KB backlights for nine dollars online.
It's called Flux. It's used as a cleaner of sorts to promote the adhesion of the Solder.Soldering is very similar to welding and they both require clean surfaces in order for the Solder or weld to stick properly.Copper oxidizes easily and even a little corrosion on the board trace can make a solder joint weak.
George Kartvelishvili it's one thing if it is some government job someone is being overpaid for. this is free market commerce. if someone thinks i am overpaid then open a store next to mine and charge less and kick my ass.
Edward Spencer when i can achieve it yes. when it will be a complete nightmare with low chance of success, no. here firewire was within reach so why not fix it?
Somehow when you call that PCB a piece of shit, about 12 minutes in, you remind me of Gilfoyle from Silicon Valley. Congratulations on soon beating Eli the Computer Guy live in the number of subs;)
from chrome to firefox, whawhawhaa? why I changed like 10 years ago and haven't looked back, too many issues and hassles with saved profiles and bookmarks
:/ would you be able to center our view, slightly, I can handle it being on the edge, but I would love to see what you are pointing out. PS love your vids

I really like how he has the balls to use a mod wire on a differential pair.
18:42 Louis, you really filled up that hole with some gooey stuff :D
The probe points.... THEY'RE GONE.... HOLY fuck. You're a wizard man

Love your channel and especially the lead probe episode! Refreshing to hear a tech guy who tells it like it is!
Thanks for watching!

Yes, I've learned a lot from you. Thank you for sharing your talent and your thoughts on life, very impressive and inspiring
Thoroughly enjoy watching your videos
Thank you Louis!
i would love to see you fix or partly fix a 'worst case senario' board ^^
I think he did one of those as a birthday gift for himself. It's an hour or two long video.
The Bob Ross of computer repair...
I have no idea what he is doing, but this is entertaining af.

im spamming your youtube account because you rock, i know about diode testing and caps but you rock
Nice work!

I was expecting a "yay!" when you see the apple logo. :))
Dude you are a god
What will you do when in a decade the solder points will be 10 times smaller? Robotic arms to hold and move your solder and iron?
sit back and collect YT money and buy an island somewhere in the Caribbean to call home
Louis, do you enjoy this as your job? It looks quite fun.
it looks like fun, shits and giggles! until you realize that what we see is probably a 2 x 2 cm (0.8" x 0.8")
I wish I could just learn from you all day. Need a hand? XD. Im a little too far for a daily commute but hey, a day trip

I flunked out of college
+Louis Rossmann How did you learn about this stuff? Just self taught?
Hotel1 Gaming banging my head against the wall for a long time, doing nothing but trying to figure this out
+Louis Rossmann And with that reply you've just become my favorite youtuber.
Thanks for the insight, I'll be sure to remember it lol.
why aren't you using the new boardview software you showed in a previous video ?
this video is from february
Are you cleaning the board between your repairs and testing or is your flux all no-clean?
they get ultrasonic'd when I am done with them in the crest cp500d with branson ec and distilled water
Hi Louis, when you first got started how did you manage for macbook spares and boards to steal parts from without spending a fortune?
aliexpress has them for 11 bucks
Thanks, I have tried searching before but never found any, I'd be grateful if you could tell me what search term you use, thanks so much again.
ditto, I would love to fix something, but without donor boards, and no source for new...

Hi I accidentally destroyed my camera port on my MacBook Pro 2014 model can only the camera port be replaced....
Hey Louis, Do you know if the FLUKE 15B+ would be a good choice for logic board repair? I need a multimeter and the 15B is discontinued from what i can see Thanks.
it should be fine unless they did something stupid and fucked up the + version

tipt0p Thanks. Yeah, everything works fine. I'll try that. Use a heatgun on low temp or a hairdryer to separate the layers?

What is that liquidy stuff you put on before soldering?
nc-559-v2-tf amtech flux
***** crest cp500d, branson ec, 60 celsius, and distilled water
What kind of gloves do you use?
+Andrew J nitrile
Thanks!
wow the board is juncky even who ever spill that
sorry im not really techy. Just watch your videos because im interested in this stuff. But what does the liquid that you put down before soldering do?
It's called Flux. It's used as a cleaner of sorts to promote the adhesion of the Solder.Soldering is very similar to welding and they both require clean surfaces in order for the Solder or weld to stick properly.Copper oxidizes easily and even a little corrosion on the board trace can make a solder joint weak.
***** oh ok. Thanks dude
+Johnny Doe Is it just me, or does it look like he ises excessive amounts of Flux?
pacman8818 looks like it?
you can put entire board in bucket full of flux and it won't make any problem. too much flux > too little flux
how much does board level repair like this cost? it seems really time consuming, i would never be able to do this.
$200-$400 depending on the model and who is sending it
20 mins for repair, with maybe another 15 for taking apart and putting the thing back together again... seems pretty quick to me for a working 'puter.
petti78 some board repairs take 90 seconds and I get paid, some take six hours and I don't. it balances out in the end
George Kartvelishvili it's one thing if it is some government job someone is being overpaid for. this is free market commerce. if someone thinks i am overpaid then open a store next to mine and charge less and kick my ass.
Do people still use firewire?
no but it bothers me giving it back to someone if i know firewire doesn't work.
So your goal isn't just "usability," but "full-functionality" of the board?
Edward Spencer when i can achieve it yes. when it will be a complete nightmare with low chance of success, no. here firewire was within reach so why not fix it?
Somehow when you call that PCB a piece of shit, about 12 minutes in, you remind me of Gilfoyle from Silicon Valley. Congratulations on soon beating Eli the Computer Guy live in the number of subs;)
some video tearing in the beginning of the video around 0:40
guessing this is an older video only just made it to upload.
I just changed from Chrome to Firefox, configured all the add-ons and thought it was my browser bugging. Almost flipped my shit. D:
from chrome to firefox, whawhawhaa? why I changed like 10 years ago and haven't looked back, too many issues and hassles with saved profiles and bookmarks
I was encountering the weirdest page rendering & freezing issues randomly, it got really frustrating. Found few "fixes" that didn't ffix anything.
does you microscope show you a slightly different view? about 60-80% of your pointing things out are not in view for me.
the camera sees 50% of what i do
:/ would you be able to center our view, slightly, I can handle it being on the edge, but I would love to see what you are pointing out. PS love your vids
You seem tired in your work in this video. I think.
you have a knack for getting things working but holy shit your work is messy
this board was practically pissed on...
fair play, i wouldn't want to spend much time on something like that either
Yet another pile of shit resurrected. Great work sir.
this was a disgusting board :)
Love your videos but what is the gel you put on that turns brown?
It's called flux, it removes oxides(rust) on the metal contacts or pads allow the solder to bond to it better. Otherwise it sorta repels the solder
Awesome. Thanks.
