You have clearly defined what I find to be true with my foreign clients, who speak English as a 2nd language and struggle with communicating in English clearly and effectively. Even though they have the technical skills, they are overlooked for management positions. Learning soft skills, like speaking English clearly, can be be accomplished. Thank you for your research. I look forward to watching your other videos and recommending your channel to my pronunciation clients.

Thank you, Dr. Tam! This is an excellent video. Having served in the US Marine Corps and worked at F100 companies for over a decade, I can definitely relate to this. I have a MBA and a couple other masters from top tier schools and have solid experience, unfortunately as you mentioned I found it really difficult to move up despite delivering strong results. I typically end up leaving the company to get to the next level, because I lack the "soft" skills despite my direct reports and internal customers (department VPs, etc.) admiring what I do. I am also a lone wolf where I am typically the only immigrant or one of the few in the group. People expect me to be submissive, but I am pretty assertive person, which I guess shatters expectations of a typical immigrant.

I’m not an immigrant to the US, but I did move to Belgium and I’ve been here for 5 years. I can absolutely attest that this glass ceiling isn’t US specific.

Absolutely. I lived in Korea for five years and saw it there too.

Such an interesting topic! An immigrant myself (although less obvious as I'm Caucasian & living in the UK). Thanks for sharing!

Wish my parents could watch this video earlier - they felt that earlier on in Vancouver for sure.

It’s almost a guaranteed thing for immigrants to feel

Didn't know that the gender wage gap and the ethnic wage gap was so similar

      Yep, it’s very similar.

I like your videos because they are different. I understand the universal systemic issues. My question: Is it because some immigrants enter when they have an established career and essentially have to reset? To reset puts you back. I came in the professional class. and I did not look for a job, I switched careers, went back to school right away and after that training I started a position around the middle. It was not easy. I do not think it is easy for anyone. It is not that immigrants do not have the soft skills, they do not have the soft skills for that environment because every environment is different. You almost have to relearn your culture when you leave another country and enter another, in my case Canada This would be a whole different video. BTW I watched twice so you got 2 x watch-time views from me:-) These are valuable teachings. The issue is that many persons who should see value in this, are not coming here to watch.

Precisely. They have soft skills but it's a different culture.
