I just barely checked this out and i have to say, I'm really impressed! this is criminally underrated! i was really upset a couple years ago when my favorite world type was discontinued, so it's really great to see it again, especially like this. Can't thank you enough!
I'm especially ecstatic about how 1: the caves go down far enough to spawn a pretty substantial amount of diamands, which were always a huge issue in floating islands before, 2: deserts and badlands are stable and non laggy, despite being made of falling blocks and 3: the nether biomes were still recognizable and intact, despite being floating islands Again, incredible work!
Update: My newest version of this Datapack is on Modrinth here: modrinth.com/datapack/revamped-floating-islands I have not added the nether pack on Modrinth yet, but I plan on adding it soon. Most recent update: I have now updated this to version 1.20!!! @@defnotmylo It should because that's what I've been using. If you're having issues, it could be installing the datapack improperly. I missed a step in the video. Once you extract it, the datapack is inside the folder that comes out. So you basically extract the file, open the folder, and then use the folder inside that folder.
This is amazing! I need to do some testing, but I want to host a small "Last Life"-esque game on a world where you can fall off the edge. This seems to maybe fit in perfectly!
Oh boy thank you! When I got Java edition I really liked this world type. But when I realized that they removed it in 1.17 (I think it was that version) I was bit sad. But thanks to you datapack I can play on this world type again and it's better than before!
Incase the instructions on how to make the datapack appear on the datapack menu, because I had quite some problems until I figured it out. Assuming you have downloaded the zip file in your downloads go ahead and unzip it and throw away the zip file, leave that alone for a while. Go to a creating world menu, press datapacks and open the datapack folder for THAT world so just press the button that this guy did in the video. With the datapacks folder open for that specific world, go find your unzipped file and drag and drop it into the datapack folder of that world... and THEN the pack will showup in the menu. Can't just assume everyone knows how to use datapacks, because unfortunately not everyone does.
Please make one for 1.19. Whatever is on CurseForge is just one for 1.18 and it fails a check whenever I try to add it and save before generating. Never mind. It just hid it out of the way. I never used CurseForge and the latest version wasn’t in the download versions page.
my only gripe with this world gen is that the islands are too connected in my opinion. if you look in a bigger scale it looks more like one giant floating island with gaps and fractures in it. but i was hoping for more separate islands with maybe a couple hundred blocks between each island
I’ve made a different one that does look more like that, but honestly it’s not up to my own standards. I’ve recently gotten back into world generation and I’ve found a bunch of powerful tools that might let me do that.
Yeah, that’s because the main thing I did with this is port the old Minecraft Floating Islands preset into the modern version, kept the biomes, and added some other features (like oceans and river bodies of water, not shown in this video I don’t think). However, my most recent project *is* doing what you said, if you want to see some teasers, you can join my discord. Of course, they aren’t that far apart at the moment, but it is a great improvement upon the regular floating islands. Additionally, I can always change the distance myself.
@@Lawrence_Krystle That sounds interesting, I've never heard of 1.12.2 sky islands. Is that a mod or vanilla feature? I checked on 1.12.2 on customized world settings and didn't see anything.

Yes and no. Structure mods are completely fine, but if you use my most recent data pack (revamped floating islands), with a biome mod none of the extra biomes would spawn. This can be fixed, however the other issue is that the surface rules (what causes badlands to have red sand, and plains to have grass) will not be active for the new biomes. That can also be fixed but that is a case by case basis. There are some compatibility mods that I’m going to look into in the future to make sure that it can be more compatible.
Not enough empty space for my liking, just looks like a regular world with really big holes in. I was looking more for something like the removed skylands generation, but with different biomes on distinct islands. Do more recent releases have such generation options, or should I look elsewhere?
I’m close to releasing a new project that will probably suite that, but it’s ironic you say that this isn’t the “removed skylands generation” when it is. People just have an imagine in their mind of what it looked like when it really was just bad.
@@Shnarfbird Specifically it's the floating islands preset that was in recent versions of Minecraft only to be removed during 1.18. The beta version may have been better!
I wonder if it's possible to have "normal" ocean biomes below all the islands... this is all really cool! Is this compatible with TerraBlender and mods that add new biomes?
That sounds like an interesting idea.. Do you mean like near the bottom of the world, instead of a void, have water generate with terrain underneath it and more caves under that as well? Or just water? Or what? As for mod compatibility, some have said yes to some mods, and some no to others, so test it out yourself!
From what I understand about how rivers generate, I would not think so. However, in the updated version with aquifers, they can generate in the snow biomes and if exposed to the sky will have ice on them. It's not exactly a river and more of a large frozen lake, so it's similar but not the same.

Huh you know I didn't think about doing it with the end because it would "be the same" but you're right it would probably be a bit different. I'd have to look into it a bit though before I can say how good it would be/if it would work because from my memory, world generation with the end is a bit weird.
@@Klinbee if you manage to pull it off it would be awesome. But yeah, I think the end would look different, the floating islands would generate at different heights and would have different shapes, that should be a little more interesting than what the base game has to offer. Combine that with the better end mod and I think you'd have a pretty spectacular end dimension :D

Might be a dumb question, but is there a 1.18.2 version of this? I'm trying to put a Valkyrien skies pack together (airships are cool), and want to have segmented islands to encourage flying machine use!
@@Ben-ji2ln I have one kind of but it doesn’t have aquifers… it’s on my github under floating islands 1.18. I tried adding aquifers but 1.18’s code is different so it didn’t work. I want to get it to work though in the future but it is not a high priority. If I find a tool that converts the datapack to 1.18 and it works though, I’ll try that.
You should check out my video "Experimenting with minecraft's world gen" or w/e it is called. I showed a bunch of floating island types, and some were like skyblock. I made downloads for some of them and will make more if there are requests. You can prob find a link to the one similar to skyblock in the comment section somewhere. Might add them to the desc to make it easier to find.

I may also make a base version that is compatible with mods since I get asked this a decent bit... Just delete the "dimension" folder in the datapack, and use the "void structure fix" file to replace the existing "biomes_at_void" file.
@@ByThePond CurseForge is only for mods, but modrinth is for datapacks and mods, and I have not converted any of these datapacks into mods yet, so it is on modrinth at the moment. I’ll probably make a mod version in the future at some point though.

I've made a minecraft server once before and it was a long time ago, so I really don't know. All I know is you would normally just put it into the world's datapack folder.

Currently no. Even if I did make it compatible, it some parts like custom surface blocks (e.g. sand in deserts, grass in plains) would just default to grass. It is possible to make it compatible with modded biomes though, but it’s currently a case-by-case basis due to how Mojang made some parts of worldgen work.

Just checked again and yeah SF3 and SF4 had them both Sky island terrain gen, probably a mod from 1.12.2.

my game is freezing very often and i think it's because of this, any ideas ?
I mean it definitely could be, but I haven't had issues if I just used performance mods and lowering render distance. 1.18+ Minecraft is laggy.
