This trick isn't that difficult to pull off. What Michael did was have an assistant watch the painting closely, then they fill the room with semi-toxic sleeping gas. While the man is in a catatonic state, Michael sits down and replicates the painting, then closes it in the box. Then, after about a week, the man wakes up and feels like nothing happened.

Easy trick to do. An assistant watched what the man was doing from a camera above then replicated it. He then slipped the painting in between a slot in the wooden crate.
and even easier if you can just edit out the footage of you swapping the boxed painting ("oh, sorry, wrong box"), you could take as long as you'd like to do it.
