On that point, I noticed a fair amount of weapons named differently from their real world counterpart. (I work with and make melee weapons for a living). The easiest one to see is the gladiator trident (actual name). In game this is the square trident.
If you ask me, flail and shield is the best in the entire game- It's complete bullshit, you go for swings and most of the time (assuming you're doing it right), you can just attack right over or around the enemies shield and hit them regardless. It does so much damage that you can plow through enemies quickly- I've won so many 1 v many's with the flail.

I think the a lot of the weapons just have different names for flavor purposes. The dakka looks a lot like a Roman gladius and the puku dagger thing resembles a pugio. Those big two-handed swords with the forward curve, can't recall their in-game name, strongly resemble falxes and/or rhomphaias.

(bound on equip) Here's some lore: You've been cursed by a witch for stealing from her and getting caught. Ofcourse you unknowingly did this in your Guardsman disguise you conveniently forgot to unequip. You've been cursed to only wear your disguise forever. You've tried to sell them since you didn't believe what an old women said; Well guess what thaddeus bought? He got screwed and now Hates you. That's why your in the arena. Specifics: Guardsman Armour set MEDIUM ARMOUR ONLY (I'll allow a cape but it's purely aesehetic). HELMET MUST BE BRIMMED no class spcifcs but again only 1. When you buy your first piece of gear for a slot that's it. Forever. Or go naked if they need repair. WEAPONS ARE LIMITED. You may choose either 2h Halebeard (uh yeah) or 1H Spear/Heavyshield or AN AXE (what ever floats your boat) but only 1, remember it's B.o.E. Shields?! Oh yeah well anything can be a shield even a crate or a net or even a second sword (personally I consider parry as a BLOCK ability so again whatever floats your boat. BUT I'll have you know this, if you choose an offhand weapon the B.o.E still applies.) FACTIONS AND BRIBES Thaddeus must be >=90% Spiteful BEFORE you gain freedom! Purple and Yellow must be at a minimum range of +40-+60 green whis neutral because the with was his exwife.... well one of so let's say I he they don't care. TRAINING As even of stats as possible with a +/- gap of 3. Ie 5-8-6-9-4-5 blah blah but the values do not have to be a high to low but evenly constant. ARENA DROPS If you feel inclined to gain your weapon/s here okay but again read above. Now what I haven't mentioned and haven't dived in detail for are Shields. Shields can be abused but cannot be repaired and you have a stock of 10 wooden OR 6 metallic. Size or when you get them or how, Once they break their gone BUT you CANNOT cheat and then go for a second weapon for parry. Quantity over strategy? If you wanna min max sure or restart or 'find an exploit I didn't mention (traps!? oh well) it's up to you. Much love.

Imagine a game like this with PvP/PvE, co-op, tons of customization and progression for looks and playstyles, and actually solid skill-based combat. The dev seems to have the right idea, so maybe this will be the next project if this one does well enough.

Spear + shield (faerdaka preferably) is an op combo in the later parts of the game when they all have shields just keep poking overhead
It's the most sustainable and combat effective, but if there are greater numbers against you, two wield maces/swords to the trick
