- Crystal River, Three Sisters Springs, February 2010: This young manatee was playing with me for some five minutes. What really made me sick: During my one week stay at Crystal River I saw so many snorkellers, u/w photographers and -videographers who - although strictly forbidden - were chasing, harassing and diving down to the manatees. This guy (or girlie??) here came up to me to play while I was drifting motionless on the surface. Obviously, we both enjoyed it!
And the vicious Manatee attacks.
But actually that scrunched nose is the cutest, most ridiculous thing I've ever seen.

Manatee's are naturally curious animals, they swim up to anyone usually unless they were badly treated by humans earlier. What makes me sick are the speed boats with motors that go through that area and disfigure manatees all the time. It's disgusting, and a lot of tourists blow it off.
Let's face it, a lot of people who have the money and time to be tooling around the ocean in these areas in their personal boats are dicks.

Saddest thing it's not even the ocean. It's the Everglades that they live, so they are going through swamps as fast as they can with motorboats injuring these poor animals.

Well... As long as they're "ugly" it's fine mutilating them and cutting off half their tails and other such horrible injuries via speed boat. That justifies it completely. I totally take by my comment. Thanks for informing me. No wonder there's a ton of environmentalists not throwing a fit about it, or a ton of laws trying to be passed and signs and manatee rescues. Because they're "ugly" and deserve to be hit by speed boats and have permanent injuries done to them where they can barely swim.

The way the water potato uses his flippers as little hands to hold the divers hand just melts my heart! What a precious creature, I hope they're continuing to protect these wonderful animals.

My fav part happens at 2:28 when the diver goes to belly rub, and the sweet gentle water potato actually understands and rolls over to accept rubs! (Also how his blubber jiggles under the diver’s hand ;) 😍😍😍

Please don't forget it's against the FL law to even approach then try petting an endangered FL Manatee after 33+ years as a Diver I got up CLOSE & PERSONAL but obeyed the law. +Kailua Kona I live locally to Three Sisters Springs....it's pretty damn hard to go there and NOT have manatees come up to you. If it was so illegal they'd just shut it down completely. They only recently did it as they huddled in a swarm to stay warm. They are curious and will come to you. Yea you can't go chasing after them but the point is you wont have to. Thankfully their numbers are on the rise as boaters are finally slowing tf down and not running over them =(

It's sad that the manatees' cute and docile nature is its own downfall. If only there was some way for boats and manatees to avoid each other more easily.
You may be happy to learn that Florida's manatee population is thriving. Their numbers are stronger than ever.
RoboTekno Oh Dont you worry, humans wont get away with it in the end. I think a couple of the most dangerous and destructive threats would have to be Climate change and Nuclear War. Either way, when the time comes, ITS GONNA BE HOT.
RoboTekno It ain't that hard to just mount a cage or duct around the propeller. Don't understand why everyone doesn't do it, since it makes it safer for divers and snorkellers as well as marine life.
lancer D Hmm, a duct or cage would be a little better. The best solution would probably be a jet nozzle such as on a personal watercraft like Jet Skis or Seadoos since there are no protrusions, just a hole into the hull.
Although the down side is an open propeller is much more efficient then these jet nozzles. Also the drag of a cage or even a duct around a propeller produces considerable drag at higher speeds. Although ducts produce more static thrust when not moving or at low speeds, once up to speed, the duct starts to produce more drag than an open propeller would.
So I guess if you want to same manatees and still enjoy watercraft, get a Seadoo :-P
RoboTekno The thing about jets is, they aren't really an aftermarket modification, Ducts and cages are something that is easy to add to an existing outboard. I didn't know that the extra thrust from ducts reduces at speed, so thanks for teaching me something new. The other option of course is to restrict water traffic over seagrass beds so that watercraft have to detour around.
I envy you. Manatees are such gentle creatures and to have such a close encounter would be such a treat. You were very kind not to chase them around and just let one approach you. Your interaction with this little one was commendable, not grabbing at it, just responding to its interaction with you. Like I said....I envy you. Swimming with manatees is on my bucket list. :-) Thanks for posting your video.
I was swimming in Florida last week in a canal and I felt something weird squeeze my foot, turns out, it was a curious manatee 😂 I screamed so loud bc I thought it was a shark but he was so cute! I even swam with him for a little while

I had no idea how relentless they were in their savagery! Terrifyingly tenacious! It just kept coming at him. And those whiskers! So many whiskers, the stubble burn must have been agonizing... I'm glad you gave these beautiful animals the respect they deserve and the choice as to whether or not to interact with you. I enjoyed the video especially the way the manatee used his/her flippers and mouth to satisfy his/her curosity about your hand....You were given such a gift to experience this, perhaps the manatee chose to interact with you simply because you gave him/her space to choose when, why and for how long they did.

I was sitting atop a log at blue springs in Orlando and had a family of these guys swim right under me. It was a pretty awesome experience.

I ran into an older gentleman about 20 years ago in the American Legion in Gulfport Florida. He told me his family and Neighbors would hunt manatee together in Ruskin Florida during the Depression and World War II. He said it was out of necessity for the need of food. He also told me they were absolutely delicious sort of a cross between beef and pork and even better tasting then either one of them. He had a lot of interesting stories of what Florida was like almost a hundred years ago or so.

Aww. Manatees are the cutest. They're sorta like that uncle you're kind of afraid of at first because he's big and hairy (and, also, because they sorta look like walruses and walruses are assholes), but then you get to know him and he's actually just really big and cute.

Don't put manate tries to bite off my hand, some people will believe it, I spent 4 years in Florida and use to swim on my own with manatees at a place called Blue Springs near Daytona Beach, absolutely loved them, came back to England 30 years ago and still think about the times I spent with them.
