    important for international or people just not from around narrm/brunny - Ceres is the name of where the bike shed is located, and it's a pretty special place in contrast to most commercial or profit driven enterprises. It started as a local cleanup mission for the Merri river nearby and has grown into a educational institute, a community farm, workshops and family space which are all run to a give-back system. It's really special to see a place like Ceres still thriving in a society that only values capital and labour. Not to mention any kids like myself who half grew up in the mad playgrounds here.

    hello gary, after watching your own bike restoration videos and others I was inspired to fix up a bike for my girlfriend. this lead to fixing up a whole load more and eventually getting involved in my similar local bike volunteer place. it's the Bike Hub Dun Laoghaire in Dublin, Ireland. i now run a weekly upcycling deal fixing donated bikes and then gifting them to charitable causes. it's a ton of fun, these volunteer-run bike workshops are a great idea and i only wish there were more !

    Hear where i live our local council collected from there tips and brought them to our workshop. We made good bikes up to sell on christmas was extremely busy as you expect. This same place i did my cycle mechanic course. Its brillant old bikes are brought back from the dead and people learn from each other

    Here in christchurch NZ there's an identical entity named rad bikes which has just moved into bigger, better (weatherproof) premises and of course shout out to the boys at the second hand shop, around again cycles...
    you forgot to ask what it's like trying to keep the weather from the bikes/components as that's something of an issue for the industry, lol

    • @nickwatson2217
      @nickwatson2217 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      I can try to answer that question! All the really good bikes are fixed quickly and sold the same week, but everything that gets donated has sat around unloved outside or in a garage for a good long while before being donated anyway. We aren’t losing parts to weather that we want to use, that stuff is long dead before it makes it to the shed.
      Being in the inner north of melb its a fair way from the sea so no salty air getting to the parts and a lot of the donations are from nearby(even further north too) with similar conditions. Our geography is a massive benefit to us. we also aren’t overly concerned with the cosmetic side of the bikes, if everythings working its ready to go to a new owner.

      @@nickwatson2217 hi nick, cheers for your reply
      I guess I should have been a little more specific with my question lol....
      Firstly I've been involved (either directly/indirectly) with the second hand bike industry for several years and I understand the lottery behind whats donated. The last shop I worked at we struggled with keeping any inventory from environmental damages and it was a mission to keep it all serviceable, let alone sellable.
      In the vid I noticed an awful lot of inventory outside incl wheels, tyres, forks, saddles all of which do not react well over time to rain or sun exposure, is this stock dead or is there no room to store it away from the environment safely?
      Essentially what is the co -op doing to mitigate environmental exposure to inventory?
      ... hint, shipping containers are a godsend for the industry and are relatively cheap

    • @nickwatson2217
      @nickwatson2217 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      @@blairrighton6270
      A lot of what you see stored outside is recently stripped junk that hasnt made it up to the rubbish area yet, that stuff gets moved to the bins as we find the time. Lower quality wheels/tyres live outside, some of them get used, the good stuff is well protected. Anything thats stored outside is essentially stuff we are’t too sad to lose to theft or weather. Cant save everything! Theres plenty of good saddles, wheels, tyres and frames stored inside the shed ready to be put on the bikes we fix every week. We send on some donations to other more recently started bike sheds around melbourne that dont get as many donations as we do so they can build up their operations. So I guess the answer to your question is: Prioritisation of usage and storage. The more storage space we have the more it would get filled with junk! Kinda like adding lanes to highways. Dunno where we’d fit a shipping container onsite but great idea!
      The shed is a not-for profit, not a co-op. All profits go back to the running of the shed. It started 40 years ago as a large pile of bikes… you’d see the part you wanted, reach in to the pile, strip it off and put of your bike! Its come a long way since then :)
