    I loved the light, the airiness, the simplicity, the wonderful use of color against the black and white; but as an old and shakey person, I would not climb stairs without a handrail, or a pink ladder to a tiny narrow shelf with no safety rail. Cudos to Tom and Zoe for sticking it out together. They could go into business- she could design and he could build. Great teamwork!

    I'm looking at the 3 of them in the design store as they examine architectural wall coverings and I'm thinking - "Do they have any IDEA what it's going to look like, with all those nooks and crannies, covered in DUST!? Have they ever done any actual housekeeping!? So impractical and a safety nightmare for small children and older people - plants on high overhead shelves above a staircase - no handrails on the stairs, a narrow, dangerous loft bed up an unsecured ladder and elsewhere - sheer drops to a story below...and closets, why is there never any space designated for closets, for godssake!? "Wow" factor vs common sense!

    Living in Canada I find building in the UK must be a pain. I designed our house, had professional plans drawn up, sold our house & bought a lot then within 2 weeks had a building permit. We rented a house for 4 months & had 2 weeks spare to move in, 3 bedroom house, vaulted ceilings & large windows. 25 years later we are still in it & still enjoy everything about it.

      I think the key to your comment is 25 years ago. Unless you’re somewhere very rural, building code and permit requirements have become increasingly expensive and tedious to obtain. Not to mention the cost of securing materials and financing.

      @@ateliergray we were one of the first people to build in what was a new subdivision on the perimeter of a 100,000 population community & a 2 minute walk down the street to a large lake. Homes to this day are still being built in subdivisions near by within the 4 month period of the subdivision being completed.

      Try doing the same nowadays after Covid and with a minimum wage. Nearly impossible, not to say impossible. I live in Toronto, have a family income of 100k and still can only afford 400k if I get lucky, still, what can I buy in the city in that price range? I'm honestly considering investing in the housing market but overseas, my wife is from Brazil and with CAD 400k you can buy breathtaking homes there.

    Nice house but I lived in one in that style of decoration in the ´90. It is the past for me.
    39:15 That is creative, ingenious and beautuful. It looks new, different but is also organic and with a certain art nouveau feeling. I´m bored of black industrial houses. We need more of this kind of spaces. Congratulation to the designer of that apartment. Hope you go on in that direction

    Very nice build for a bland, common house with the great interior. One of the Grand Design videos had a build that used a rusted Cor-Ten steel that matched the brick houses' colored bricks in the neighborhood. Up to 15 years ago heavy fabrication design was my occupation in the Upper Midwestern USA and it is a cheap material that can look great and blend with older architecture when one uses some imagination. I like it because I understand how to work with it and what can be done with it. Remember that it rusts even when used for interiors and you can do fine. I like the house but my personal likes sit between Zoe and Tom and it is obvious that Zoe won most of the arguments. I like Post Modern with wood highlights. The best decisions always result from compromises when the couple listens to each other and holds their temper. My wife is very traditional and farmhouse in tastes. The open design is necessary for a small house as it blends height, light, and line of sight or a Japanese formula that creates the illusion of largeness in a tiny room. The American farmhouse also used this formula but from a different culture in building materials and methods. May you destroy your house with your pleasure & then fix it again before you sell it.

  • @BenLambert85

    For everyone complaining about the audio, overpowering music, etc. and various theories as to why - as an attorney, I can tell you the reason has to do with copyright and intellectual property laws. The original production company owns the copyright to these videos. Sharing the videos exactly as they were aired on television, without making any changes, would be a blatant violation of copyright laws and TH-cam/DIY Daily could easily be forced to remove the content. By making extensive edits to the audio track, DIY Daily can argue that the remixed video is different enough from the original that it falls into an exception to copyright protections - which makes it much harder for the original production company to force removal.

    I feel like the designer or architect or whatever he is is trying to impose his ideas on this couple. They are just ordinary people who want a homely home, but the woman made the mistake of saying 'wow factor' (ten times a minute) and now she's being pushed to go along with the out-there architect and say it's the husband who is too conservative. In fact, you can see that they don't actually like anything he's saying, but feel pushed to pretend that they like it and go along with it: he must be right, he's the expert. But these are just ordinary, not very imaginative people, obviously, who have been seduced by magazines and media and the catch-phrase 'wow factor.'

    • @UnseenSpirit

      If they decided to just make a simple home that looks like a council house, then there's no point having them on a TV show tbh.

    • @steeletaylor8079
      @steeletaylor8079 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah, the architect clearly wasn't listening to the couple - they stated they want the wow factor, then described a council house as what they wanted. Neither really listened, however, I am pleased Tom made a few changes to modernity.

    Why do these so called designers recommend not to have a handrail in the stairwell? That is there for safety. Is this common in the UK? In the US it is mandated by code, for safety, regardless of building style.
    And yes, like others have commented, the music on these shows is unbearable at times.

    The audio is terrible BY DESIGN. The BBC streaming contract that they sign with production companies includes one rate for "presenters" and a lower rate for "contributors." By stripping out all the voiceovers and leaving just the remnants of a real show, they don't have to pay K&P as presenters, just mere contributors. The BBC saves a couple of pennies without the voiceover track, so they throw half the show into the garbage and you get the unwatchable mess seen here.
