I simply love the professional knowledge and passion these two presenters have. It so refreshing and intellectually engaging. Pierce's thinking out of the box is wonderful.👌✨ Thanks for sharing 🙏❣️

This is a stunning home. And I cannot think of a more deserving couple. They have been richly rewarded for having the wits to listen to the advice they were offered.

Gorgeous house and a lovely couple, it's beautiful to see how they listen to advise and made it their own with such a small budget and managed to even impress the experts .I am inlove with the brick wall and the wall with the green planks from the old house. It's art made from salvaged materials and an amazing feature to the house.

Brillent result. Hard work, listening to a skilled architect, learning skills, thinking outside the box and grafting within the box made a beautiful home. Hope your family
enjoy it for many many years.

I love this house and the sweet family. The change in the dog and children over 18 months is lovey to see. I work part-time as a realtor's assistant and see all kinds of pricey homes that aren't much more than heaps of drywall and stucco. This is truly beautiful.
I do wonder what happened to their lovely farmhouse kitchen sink. That roll-top tub is fantastic. The only things I would have done differently is the full bath upstairs and just a powder room or loo with shower downstairs.

  • @campeau29

I was worried for them midway through the program, but in the end, it reflects their beautiful personalities and quirky resourcefulness. As a fellow graphic designer who also did a self-build, I see the parallels of risk, worry and sense of accomplishment. Happy for them! But the end part of the program question "Now that it's finished...", my sense is that self-builds are never finished, they continue to evolve now that the owner has the self-confidence and abilities to swing a hammer and use a drill and saw.

When she said she thought he needed to put more time into the family life, when he's TRYING to build them a house (with NO EXPERIENCE WHATSOEVER and CLEARLY not a clue) my jaw hit the floor!!! They're like very sweet but not very bright children. Bravo for trying. Honestly, sometimes you have to be ignorant to jump in at the deep end and nearly drown ... in order to get your dream.

Gosh, that's an achievement! Excellent use of materials & what's available. Always love post & beam - wonder if our builders know how it's done? Wonder why the insulation can't go on the outside, would be quicker & probably more efficient - so far as materials go? Very inspiring episode.

Cleaning large amounts of reclaimed brick using a SOIL COMPACTOR (as is used to prepare topsoil when laying sod): (1) CREATE A FRAME: Use double-thick floor underlayment. Put a layer of rough pea gravel and place an array of bricks to create a surface that is as flat as possible, lay 2x4s around the perimeter so the frame is 2" high (not 4") -- it doesn't have to be pretty. (2) Cast small amount of rough gravel over the top with a shovel of dry dirt and put the dirt compactor on top and let it go to work. (3) The action of the gravel beneath and above, and the bricks against each other should shake loose almost all the old mortar. (3) Sort bricks into two piles: one of "clean" bricks that are ready to use, another of bricks that need a bit of hand work to knock off a few spots of mortar.

Brick floors are rough, uneven and too much like a street. A friend's house has it and I don't like it. Brick floors are never comfortable enough to wear socks around the house or go barefoot. The house is rustic enough as it is, and the interlocking planks are a good idea by the owner.

Hemp, cob, straw - any of those he could have done on his own, and had the insulation already built in. With lime render, it would look exactly like what they wanted.
