When their record company first heard Angel Dust, they told the guys from Faith No More that the album should've been called "Career Suicide." Shows you how much record companies know.
From a corporate point of view it was.
Fortunately, they didn't care.
Angel Dust was the main influence for Papa Roach and Incubus
I don't think it sold as many copies as "The Real Thing", but it has still sold very well worldwide. It sold more to an Indie/grunge fanbase, where the 1st few albums were for a metal audience
Little did they know it would be their best album.
It was originally going to be titled Crack Hitler, unsurprisingly the label rejected that, they happened to be the two most hated words in America at the time
This album is one of the most underrated masterpieces in rock history.
This is the truest sentence to be written in all of history!

Angel Dust has sold over 2 million copies and is FNM's most successful album to date - it is most definitely RATED!
If you like the album, just f*cking say that and don't use bullshit terms like "underrated" to sound like you know something we don't....
It's not underrated at all! It's a cult album for alternative crossover metal rock and influenced a lot of bands..
It's a masterpiece. Not a single filler track on it.
I wholeheartedly agree, every single track brought something completely new! And yet they made it so cohesive too. Brilliant.
Midnight cowboy is the ending credits to the album and suits it so well.
@@mollyesanborn This might interest you: The original issue of the album did not include Midnight Cowboy and Easy. Those tracks were added only after Easy was a big hit. Midnight Cowboy, a cover of a movie theme by John Barry, was originally the b-side on the single Easy.
The main line on Midnight Cowboy is played by Patton on the Melodica (a small piano thing you blow into!)
@@EllakGr Don't know where you got this, but I bought the album as soon as it came out, and Midnight Cowboy was included. Easy was not, you're right about that one. I know because I wrote lyrics to Midnight Cowboy for a public announcement that went out over the school speakers my Junior year. Yes, I was a nerd!
You can hear entire bands' careers in mere moments of a Faith no More song. Their influence on music in the 90s is massive.

No FNM song is the same as the last on this album, each has it's own identity. I'm psyched for you to hear "King For A Day, Fool For A Lifetime" as well, that's my personal favourite.

Their best 2 albums in my opinion too. AD has more sonic variation between tracks but K4AD has great production and it’s so heavy. Also from memory Mr Bungles guitarist joined this album.
You have good taste. ‘Kindergarten’ is my favourite track. The bass is delicious, the layered synths are gorgeous, the vocals are …well, they’re Mike Patton, and the rhythm is just funky as hell-addictive.
Kindergarten is such an amazing track, I can't tell you how many times I've listened to it. Never gets old.
Mike’s vocals on the chorus of “Jizzlobber” are absolutely insane. That and “When Good Dogs Do Bad Things” off of Irony Is a Dead Scene are probably my two favorite performances of his.
I wore this album out, just could not get enough of this masterpiece.

In the 90's I became a consummate metalhead. FNM was the only band that explored music in so many directions at that time... Or even today.
I still wear this one out... on rotation atleast once a week from a to z at the gym... masterpiece
Same, this and King for a Day were my most listened to albums ever.
Yes, Angel Dust is one of the best alternative rock albums out there. A lot of variety without losing its edge. I recommend King for a Day - Fool for a Lifetime for the next FNM listening. It's more of a grower, but has some really nice songs in it. Less synth and piano, though. Album of the Year is a decent album, but a bit uneven.
The music video for Everything's Ruined is one of the best music videos ever.
This is probably gonna sound patronizing as all hell -- and I don't intend it to -- but I'm *incredibly* impressed with how sophisticated your reactions were, given that you aren't a musician, don't have any prior experience with this band, and are unsure about some of the nomenclature (the fact that you identified the "slappy" quality of the slap bass without a visual reference as to how that sound is produced was especially remarkable). At your age, I'd been a fan of this band for a few years and was in a band myself, and I'm positive my initial reaction to this album would not have been half as eloquently put.
Keep broadening your horizons -- the appreciation of music is a reward in itself!

"A Small Victory" has become my favorite song on this album, which I didn't think would happen, but after all these years it's finally got it's time in the sun.
Same for me with "A Small Victory", although the album overall is a masterpiece IMO.

It is my favourite too! But again, it wasn't always that way. When I got Angel Dust in June 1992, I didn't give ASV much creedence. A bit of a filler. Then I saw them play it live at Sheffield Arena in December 1992. Then it became my favourite song. Check out the Sheffield 1992 version, it's on here taken from a Radio1 broadcast. It's phenomenal.

Nice! In case you didn’t know Patton was the lead vocalist on one of The Dillinger Escape Plan’s EP’s. It’s just 4 songs but it’s absolutely worth a listen/review! Called Irony is a Dead Scene.
When she did calculating infinity I think most of us set out to make sure she didn't skip irony.

@@mollyesanborn after that e.p Dillinger recruited a new vocalist. And you can hear how Patton influenced them to expand their sound going forward.
He has also done vocals for a bunch of stuff with composer John Zorn (produced 1st Mr Bungle lp) he's also done Italian opera and just loads of stuff. Not surprisingly he is phenomenal on all of them, even if you don't dig the sound.
When it really comes down to it, Patton's main band has always been Mr Bungle. FNM was a kind of a very successful side gig, along side all of his others like Tomahawk or Fantomas. He's really all over the place and it's awesome.

Everything's Ruined, Midlife Crisis, and Land of Sunshine are my favorites.
"Caffeine," "Everything's Ruined," and "Kindergarten" are the highlights for me on this album. So cool to see you reacting to this masterpiece. One of my all time favorite records from high school in the 90s all the way to present day now. It always bothered me how Faith No More and Mike Patton are always remembered ONLY for that one song - "Epic." (from "The Real Thing) - which, imo, is the weakest song in their entire catalogue and there's FIVE other records of other, and better material. It's like those popular kids in school when CD's were still a thing, and people would spend 15 bucks for a single song or two songs that were on the radio or MTV (yes, MTV played music once upon a time), and I never understood the point of that. I always bought albums for the sake of what WASN'T on the radio.
Weakest song in entire catalogue? I think you might be pushing it. We get it, it's one of their most comercial songs, but that doesn't make it bad

'Caffeine' is EASILY my favorate track from "Angel Dust"!!!
Epic was a refreshing power ballad in a sea of basic alternative music. It is Faith No More's most iconic song. Just like Smells Like Teen Spirit is Nirvana's. Their other albums all felt like a side step away from the ballad format, which I don't blame them since they could have easily exhausted it. But Epic is fantastic.
Some trivia for the kids. MTV stands for "music television" and at one time it was on the cutting edge of a lot of styles of music and all the kids thought it was cool. At one point MTV decided to try reality tv with The Real World and that was the beginning of the end. RIP MTV (1981-1995)
It's never too late for Faith No More. :) In fact this was good timing, Angel Dust came out exactly 30 years ago, in June 1992.

I had this tape in my Walkman for 3 weeks straight . Back in June of 92. God I love this album.

Yeah this album was a blast to listen to. I love how dynamic they are with all of the sounds on it, they throw so much at this album but it all works together so well.

Back in the 80s and 90s piano was a common feature in rock music, the band members were real musicians, many with proper training on various instruments. Look at rock bands now it’s really just as loud a guitar as they can possibly do through their entire album

Supposedly he has the biggest vocal range of any singer across all genres. It must be his really deep register he uses, mostly in Mr. Bungle, I feel like his voice doesn't get that high.
@@bestofa.q.p.1840 if you have only heard his faith no more stuff you would think he can't go higher than E6 but the highest note he has hit live is an D#7.Most of his nasty whistle tone screams and higher falsetto stuff are from his other projects like mr.bungle, fantomas, abraxas.
I remember reading somewhere years back I think an interview with Matt Wallace that Mike Patton's voice was so incredible that he could scream his balls off and yet still sing in perfect pitch without taking a break.
Good ear on catching the industrial influence on "Malpractice". Mike Patton said the track was inspired by industrial metal band Godflesh.
The band is 5 members [singer, guitar, bass, drums and keyboard] which is why you keep hearing piano/keyboard/organ/etc.

This come out in 1992 absolutely ground breaking and years ahead of it's time and too extreme for most of the fans they picked up on The Real Thing haha = the previous album, which is also great but much more accessible.

Faith No More are the best band ever! This album was the soundtrack to my childhood, my teenage years, and I’m still listening to it religiously now that I’m in my thirties! 😂
It is really gratifying to watch a person of your generation get into this record which is an all time fave of mine. When music is as weird/unique as this I don’t really expect younger people to “get it”. And yes, King For a Day is also just as great. FNM are the Swiss Army Knife of rock bands and I love them for it.
Oh yes and there is some mad quality screaming on the track “Cuckoo for Caca”.

Finally you react to the most influential album of the 90s. this album and bungle self titled album influnced nu metal. give this album another listen it gets better the more you visit tracks. :) enjoy it with a beverage. this music sounds not as new but in 1992 it was mind blowing. this was in a time in music when rock and metal were simple and not as diverse. after this more bands started forming such as korn, deftones, system,distubed, papa roach, etc.
now you understand where deftones, slipknot, korn and all the new metal bands got their inspiration from ;)
Love how FNM’s use of keyboard added a whole new dimension to their songs.
Hands down to one of the greatest albums in history, so much changed in scene after this masterpiece, you hear so much influence from it and from FNM in so many alternative Rock/Metal bands after it, established a new pattern to make Rock/Metal music.
You picked up on the concept of the album pretty quick when you said "The sound of the song and the feeling it gives you is the opposite lyrically with what's going on with the track". Their keyboard player chose the name Angel Dust because it's a really beautiful name for a really hideous drug. The album artwork works the same way with an alluring great egret on the front cover and an image of a cow hanging on a meat hook on the back.

Angel Dust is not only my fav FNM’ album but my fav album ever hands down, such a masterpiece. You captured my same reaction first time listening to it, in 2007. I just never paid much attention to FNM before except for the singles, till one day I found this album on my mp3 files and gave it a go. It was such a slap in the face in a good sense. Never stopped listening to it, helped me through some rough times either. It just turned 30 years old. Part of my life’s soundtrack. Glad you enjoyed it!

It’s cool that you picked up one the theme of the album. The duality of being the opposite of what they sound like. Even the title Angel Dust is that way. Angel dust sounds magical, then you find out it’s pcp. The front of the record had this bird and it’s pretty nice looking, and on the back, a slaughterhouse.
You got a touch of Patton in yer eye. Thx 4 this, it brings back a friend who s gone long....we did a comic on this cd. For weeks that is. Thx again

Really enjoy this video. It's worth noting that "Easy" wasn't the original last track of the album, at least in America. (The last song was the Midnight Cowboy instrumental.) However, "Easy" is at the very end of the UK version of the album, as sort of a bonus track. "Easy" was also released as a CD single in the States.

You made great reactions to Angel Dust and Dirt - those were the two albums that pretty much defined my sophomore year in high school! You've earned subscription! I love your unique reaction style - rather than take things a song at a time, you're going for the whole album. I can see how that may cost you viewers, because people really want to hear the whole song, but I respect you for it, because you're able to post reactions to so much more material for the people who know what you're listening to. You're staking out your own territory in the reaction space, and I appreciate it!
On this album in particular; this is in my Top 10 albums ever. There are at least 6 tracks that I absolutely love, and maybe only 1 that I'm not a big fan of. For an album with 14 songs on it, that's an incredible success rate. I can remember riding with my friend, driving his parent's car, with the sunroof open at night, just blasting this album as we tore down the streets heading wherever we were heading! This was such an amazing follow up to the brilliance that was The Real Thing, and a forecast of things to come!

This album and Pantera's Vulgar Display of Power were the two best albums of that year (1992) for me. I listened to them constantly that year. The last two songs on the album are covers. Midnight Cowboy is the theme song to the movie of the same name. The first and only X rated picture to win an Oscar. Easy was a cover of a Commodores' song and was originally released as as single along with a cover of the Dead Kennedy's Let's Lynch the Landlord.
Fr two best albums of 1992 dirt and core are more grunge but also great albums from that year
Ministry's album Psalm 69 came out that year too. A really incredible year and 3 of my favorite albums, pretty crazy

We Waited a long time for this (lol). Hope you enjoyed and dive into their discography. Patton is a beast but i think Roddy the keyboard player doesnt get enough love from the audience. His sounds and samplers are a big part of the fnm style. Easy was a biiiiiig hit in Brazil and was the sound track to a soap opera.

Great review! I was in my early teens when this was released and everyone was crazy for nirvana and that kind of thing, everyone was trying to sound like them. And this comes out, wow these guys just totally doing their own thing. I liked it but didn't love it at the time but it really grew on me, it's now one of my favourite albums ever. I love seeing what people think of it today when first hearing it
Earned a subscriber solely based on listening to this album. Love seeing a reaction from a first listen as it was sooooo many years ago since this album was a fresh listen to me. Love the respect you give it. Listen to ‘King for a day’ its Mr Bungles guitarist with FNM but a brilliant album. Less keys as Roddy was dealing with issues but still another masterpiece.

Thing with FNM music is, it takes a few listens to really sink in. But once it does, it's like a drug. Best Art Rock band ever. Also your favorite song is my favorite song of theirs as well. Kindergarten really showcases FNM's strengths. Though it's incredibly difficult to pick up a favorite song from their material as there are so many exquisite tunes to choose from.

All the string sounds, piano sounds, orchestra sounds etc, are the keyboard player who really set the sound apart for FNM

An absolute perfect album from start to end, one of the greatest album ever, not only in Faith No More's history but in whole music history either. Revolutionary, iconic, legendary!
I enjoyed the journey and now am digging through the other videos! Mike Patton is my favorite artist and took me down a rabbit hole to so many new bands. This is an incredible example of what he can do in a "conventional" rock group.
Some other bands with a similar vibe would be Twelve Foot Ninja and Thank You Scientist!

The album is great but look up "Mike Patton Angel Dust interview" on youtube. It's long but it's the funniest interview you will ever see.

I think FNM was one of the pioneers of genre bending which continues as strong as ever in metal with bad like Loathe, Thornhill, and Northlane.... Each of these bands bringing their own unique take.
I would love for you to react to The Dark Pool by Thornhill. This might be one of my top albums of all time.
Cool to see you react to this one, it's probably my fave of FNM's, but each album (including the 2 pre-Patton albums) have their own thing happening. I still remember buying the Midlife Crisis single on cassette prior to this album being released and being awed by hearing the b-side (which was the mighty Jizzlobber) for the first time. One of the great and massively influential bands ever.
