    I think it's also worth bringing up that while the Deep Ones have some powerful tools in the form of shoggoths and other summoned/bound creatures, it's a recurring theme in Lovecraft that reliance on such critters for extended periods of time always backfires. In such a human-Deep One war, there'd probably be a turning point where they overcommit to try and seize victory only to implode shortly afterwards as their "servants" turn on them.

      Then again, a Shoggoth uprising may not take sides.
      They did wipe out Elder Thing civilization, so armies of rampaging rebellious Shoggoths are not something I'd appreciate happening amidst our human civilization either, even if they did turn against the Deep Ones as well!

      As I understood it all the "modern " life on earth was derived from the shoggoth, and the deep ones were just closer to the original amorphous shapeshifter nature of the shoggoth than the rest of life on earth hence the interbreeding ability.

    @4:20, heh, I have had this exact argument on learned academic forums such as 4chan. WW1: over half a billion field artillery shells fired. WWDeepOnes: a handful of torpedoes (from the comically inept era of early submarines) results in a serious setback to their plans for retribution.

    • @SandyofCthulhu
      @SandyofCthulhu  4 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      The torpedoes used in 1931 had 600-lb warheads. Detonated several hundred yards down, the overpressure would actually be quite devastating to marine life, with a COLOSSAL burst radius. Enough torpedoes would be the equivalent of a nuclear strike at depth. In addition, they were firing at a "civilian" city, not a fortification. I can easily see Y'ha Nthlei being devastated by such an attack. Plus if the strike released their shoggoth from its containment area ...

    • @Skullkan6
      @Skullkan6 3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Delta Green actually had the government go further in the years post-Innsmouth, firing torpedoes, or depth charges at presumed Deep One cities or wiping out human hybrid colonies.
      It's actually one of the things that gets them shut down (the first time, before their resurrection as a program between world war 2 and the vietnam war).

    Talking the Deep Ones and Cthulhu and the oceans, Mr. Petersen, have you ever heard of a story or scenario where humans learn that porpoises and dolphins worship Cthulhu, and that 'whalesong' is actually an endless hymn to the glory of Great Cthulhu? 12:44 Strange note on this. Whereas I think you have mentioned they may be Byahkees or etc. in another video, Delta Green actually took a strange step and made them their own created called just "The Black Winged Ones" , which are described as "Semi-insectile, semi-humanoid entities carry out murder at the behest of Cthulhu or Its cult masters. Their true appearance is a mystery; their outer form seemingly drinks light or at least sheds perception like an oil slick. The few surviving witnesses don’t generally mention eyes or even number of limbs, but they all mention the black wings Some carry knives or scimitars, or make use of bayonets or razors found nearby."
    Not entirely a fan of the idea but at the very least it's interesting. They even (SPOILERS) show up in the Fall of Delta Green free RPG Day Scenario that involves a hippy Commune and a really clever tie to the fallout of another Lovecraft story as to why they are there.
    The scenario itself is... alright, it could use some work and would work better as a short story or with chunks taken out or expanded.

    7:25 The point about many Deep Ones having been human in the early decades of their lives is something I had not considered, and it's particularly frightening.
    Those who were human before really do know everything about human civilization in the era where they lived that stage of their lives, and might potentially have knowledge about our technology, tactics, disposition of our populations and military, etc.
    The idea that all the quick wittedness and will of the Shadow Over Innsmouth's protagonist (that allowed him to survive, evade, and escape the throngs of his pursuers in the story) might have eventually been bent to serve the Deep Ones if he had become one (assuming he had not later killed himself like his uncle did) is horrific. Whatever mistakes in thinking the pursuing mob made when they failed to stop his escape, they would not make again, because he would have become one of them and spread his knowledge and way of thinking to them.

    I appreciate the emphasis on just who/what the Deep Ones are in league with!
    Could not the Deep Ones "simply" raise the ocean levels, similarly as in the case of "The Doom That Came to Sarnath"? It could make for an exciting and relevant modern-day CoC scenario, what with the water levels rising as a result of climate change. Could humanity only be accelerating this long-game plot of the Deep Ones?
    15:43 I will never be able to take that spell seriously ever again. Thank you!

    • @SandyofCthulhu
      @SandyofCthulhu  5 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      I don't see how. It's not like they can magically create more water. The Doom that came to Sarnath wasn't a water raising, but rather a land-lowering, and a gigantic magic curse in the Dreamlands.

    Rail guns, a one shot kill easily. Electricity would do it too, maybe even more effective. We've also sonic weapons which would be devastating in a being using sonar. The best offense would be antimatter explosions and the resultant gamma rays which could double-tap the universe. Btw, they've hands like us to facilitate tech use; our best defenses can be used against us. Metalworking in the sea isn't impossible because hydrothermal, tho you'd expect them to want to mitigate or avoid corrosion. Electricity is a possibility in deep dwellers, opening up possible electroplating(we only see what's on the outside, so steel overlayed with gold maybe). Nukes are possible: heavier elements gravitated to the core and could be extracted with patience.

    The era might play a role. It would certainly be more helpful for us to fight them with our technology now than back in the 20s. A bolt-action rifle versus a minigun or such weapon? And their edge with poisons and chemical weapons might have some challenge with the things the governments probably have hidden away.
    If they issued one big coordinated attack, using "human" allies, then maybe they could create enough chaos to severely hinder humanity. But I think if this happened we'd all descend into guerilla warfare and we would ultimately win. Isn't that why the Japanese in WW2 said that behind every blade of grass in the USA is a gun, something like that? So perhaps the fighting and mass destruction would be concentrated in coastal cities. Inland Russia, China, USA, South America, Africa... enough humanity would live to fight back.
    Shoggoths would be a problem. One could probably tear apart a city but destroying the controller of the shoggoth? And with modern weapons? Shoggoth VS napalm? High explosive? And what if they have a hidden weapon, something unknown? A virus or some way to poison the oceans and waters we consume...
    It's definitely a fun concept but perhaps as you said it was Deep One propaganda when they said they could just wipe us all out.

As for weapons, while explosives and combustion are lost the would have things akin to harpoon guns and slingers that spear fishermen use. He's more-or-less describing X-Com (2): Terror from the Abyss. It's basically X-COM UFO Defense with a bunch of Cthulhu art slapped on for a cash grab, but the atmosphere and lore is way better than the original because its much more consistent and grounded. "Deep Ones" are one of your primary enemies and were artificially constructed for a task and are at war with the surface humans. They capture human "stocks" to create more. Humans bodies are modified and installed with microchips and other biotech modifications. An alien fetus is attached and consumes the body as it grows eventually consuming everything... except the eyes.
    The alien races use all kinds of "water" acceptable weaponry. "Lightning" guns, "sonic" weapons, gauss rifles, dart guns, psionics to distress or control enemies. Also melee, toxins, etc.
    One of the crazy smart game decisions for the game is you start with guys with torpedo launchers (underwater rocket launchers). The game is brutally hard, so a few guys with a powerful weapon is super helpful. But there's a catch. The second the aliens start invading cities on land, you go into battle and realize none of your torpedo launchers work on land. So if you didn't start researching more powerful weaponry by now and replaced them, you are in for a world of hurt. You go to take a shot and then you just hear, "click."
    If you want to try it, get OpenXcom. It's an open source project that lets you play both xcom, and xcom terror from the deep in much higher resolutions and modern features (also fixing game breaking bugs!). I just beat Terror From the Deep a year or two ago for the first time using that. The music (especially modder remixed orchestra versions) are __haunting__ and still make my heart rate rise just hearing them.

Like a Shoggoth suit or a Shoggoth mech that increases you speed and strength?
    Plus those fuckers can make any biological organ so like... No guns? Make a portable shoggoth that shoots poison spines like a nail gun. Or one that zaps its enemies with electricity like an electric eel. Have a shoggoth that can shoot a highly pressurized stream of water or venom to slice through they're enemies from a distance.... Maybe even use one to create a possible EMP wave....
