Hi all - a friend of mine just pointed out that I made a mistake with the calculation of the odds of hitting a straight by the river! It should be 32%, not 17%. 8 outs twice. Doesn’t really change the result - but thought I should point out that I make math mistakes too 😅
lol....just saw this part on the video and was like "he went all in so don't you have 2 streets to make the straight and so 33%?".....thanks for clarifying... (FYI- if it wasn't an "all in" bet against you I would then use 17% because if you use 32% in that situation (ie. two streets of betting) it assumes that your oppenent will let you see the river for free...which is rarely the case in reality. so 17% on a non all-in bet and 32-33% vs an all-in bet is how I personally do calculations for OESD after the flop.

Something you should add to the vlog is the stack size at the start of the hand. That info adds a lot of information and plus we can follow along with how the session is going.
I’m happy to have your video pop up on my feed I followed along for the journey and I love the detailed animations of odds and stuff! Keep up the great work!
Hello PP! I’m a low stakes 1/3,NLHE recreational enthusiast. FYI “The Rules of Four and Two” Little Green Book by Phil Gordon to calculate hand equity vs Pot Odds to make quick decisions at poker table. Thank you for this video !!!! Thumbs up 👍, you don't really see sessions of 1-2 dollar denomination, I'm working my way up to get confident so I can play the 2-3-5 So I see the max buy in is 200??? Also I wanted to ask how do you write down your notes from the hands in the session ? I'm trying to figure out a easy way for me to draw down of my sessions without having to keep writing everything down on a notepad
A9h- On the turn you have to consider what hands that are worse call you here, by checking behind on the turn you also give your opponents incentive to bluff on rivers. Majority of time you are called especially 3 way you’re toast. On the river that hand may bluff. Worth considering the value of checking compared to betting
At 15:31 you say you have 17% chance of hitting straight by the river. I figured that with 8 outs (4 9s + 4 As), and using Gordon's rule of 4 (we see turn and river) we would have 4 * 8 or 32% equity, double what you mentioned. Did you use 2x instead of 4x? Why? Thanks!
Have you read any good poker math books? I can recommend: Essential Poker Math, Expanded Edition by Alton Hardin Modern Poker Theory by Michael Acevedo. Good luck at the tables.
i don't think there is anything wrong with just calling an early raise with A9s. For 3-betting I rather use A2-A5s A9s hardly folds out better hands and has less playability. 3-betting the entire range against an open even in position does not seem necessary unless you have a specific reason. I would mix calling and 3-betting. would be interesting what your preflop strategy is in a specific spot and why. Also your explanation overall seems a lot more fluent compared to the first video. well done👍
What math classes are you currently teaching? Would be fun to see you sprinkle in a proof or two. One of my math professors once said that mathematicians are not necessarily good at arithmetic, and calculating poker odds is arithmetic only.
I’m currently teaching a graduate course for high school math teachers - focused more on policy and educational reform. Next semester I’ll be teaching a graduate stats and probability course. Hah, yeah when I have enough time I’m okay with arithmetic.
I’m curious to know why at 19:30 you think that you are more likely to have a 5 than your opponent, I always hear these kinds of stammers but no one explains why that is. Great work so far, I’ll be watching more of your content as it’s very informative
As the preflop caller in position, I can show up to the flop with a ton of different types of hands. I can have any of the small pocket pairs, any 5 such as 65, 75, A5, K5 suited etc. the preflop aggressor is less likely to have a 5 in this spot given that his range should be much narrower. From early position I think he should be much more limited to hands like pocket fives and A5. Thanks for the comment and question!
I think at 100 big blinds or less calling a 3 bet heads up doesn’t cap your range depending on what strategy you’re using. Again, depending on what strategy you are using I think even deep stacked you can have a balanced range with AA as a call a small percentage of the time.
100bb should not be calling a 3bet at all with premiums. Absolutely caps your range at 100bb. Deeper, sure you can maybe put in a call with AA but I'm not really seeing that happen at low stakes.
Can’t just show 1 card, if showing cards must flip both over . It’s not high stakes we’re players are allowed to do whatever they want like running the board twice
Hey, here is a good article on calculating your percentage odds of hitting a draw! It’s not exact, but it’s a good rule to use on the table without slowing things down! www.thepokerbank.com/strategy/mathematics/pot-odds/4-2/
What’s the rake in this game? Also, if you are targeting full houses as you did with quads and the other hand you had a full house bet 1.5 to 2x pot. Players at this level will not fold full houses
I'm guessing the only-1's policy is probably trying to cater to some *very* casual players and differentiate from the 2/3 game he played before. But dang, that's a boatload of chips to have to move around every hand. 2 racks just to sit with the cap? Yuck. On the plus side, I guess the dealers don't need to be constantly making change.
Im not a fan of the way you explained the pot odds calculation at 09:50. You shouldnt add your own call to the potsize when youre calculating the odds. Your opponent bets 29 into a pot of 93 which means you have to call 29 to win 122. This gives you the odds of just over 4 to 1 which means you have to be good here 1 in 5 times (20%) to make this call profitable. You might have come to the same result with your calculation (19%) but I think your way of doing the calculation is a little less intuitive and lacks in explanation.
I disagree. Adding your call into the final pot skips the ratio to percent conversion. 100% times quicker for me at least. It’s also exactly the same math…
Thanks for the comment. I could have probably done a better job with the explanation the relation between pot odds and equity needed to make the call - you actually used this idea in your own explanation! 4:1 means you are good 1 in 5 or 1/(4+1) times.
Wow this is like the softest $1/2 game Ive ever seen. Idk if it's just bc I'm in Texas and the action is always insane or what...? Like standard RFI in the 1/2 games I play at the local card rooms in Dallas is always 10-12x the BB like every hand. And players hardly ever fold lol
Hi, somehow youtube got me into you when am searching for ace to 10 3 player or 5 player strategy, hand strength and position content. I cant find any, but yeah... would be nice if you have one tho, lol.
Something lower stakes players do , and you do a lot of, is you’re calling in position trying to chase draws. You should hardly ever try to draw. Show some aggression, take control of the pot, that way whenever your draws brick out, you don’t have to fold the river or count on a one street bluff. 3 bet more in position pre flop, and raise in position more often with your weaker draws to take control of the pot. Otherwise, good content, however your voice in a bit too monotonous and boring, no offense. But if you want people to watch for the long haul, gonna have to develop some character to your speech’s and breakdowns.

another mistake in Heuristics table . the pot odds is not 2:1 for 2x size pot bet , it is 5:2 which is 40%

Hey MATH guy, what's the rake at this $1/$2 game? With the tiny stacks and what I presume is high rake, it may not be worth playing this one.
Is that a Yang MATH hat by chance?
It is weird, but people shouldn't be allowed to play out of the rack 😂😂
Superrrr

At 11:32 the dealer turns your mucked card face up. They shouldn’t be doing that right?
Ya, what the heck?!
Can’t just show 1 card, if showing cards must flip both over . It’s not high stakes we’re players are allowed to do whatever they want like running the board twice
Do you have any tips of how to quickly calculate odds while at the table?
Hey, here is a good article on calculating your percentage odds of hitting a draw! It’s not exact, but it’s a good rule to use on the table without slowing things down! www.thepokerbank.com/strategy/mathematics/pot-odds/4-2/
@@Professor_Poker thank you!
Can I ask why the dealer flipped over your 5h in the hand you lost to Ks over Qs when you had trip Qs?
I’m not entirely sure - I thought I could show one without showing both. But maybe not! Or the dealer just turned it over without thinking
Do you take notes of the people at your table and how to exploit their playstyles?
Mental notes mostly!
Do you play any tournaments?
I’ve played a handful! I like them, min-cashed a few of them. But I like cash mostly.
Great video! Interested to see how the journey goes.
🙂should use Math Professor Poker 🙂 most professor can not count 😞
What flavor of math are you a professor of?
Why do they only play with $1 chips??
I’m not sure! Just a policy they have for the 1/2 game.
@@Professor_Poker is it a low cap game?
@@nicholi2789 he said it was $200 cap.
Guy opened to $3?!
Why are so many $1 chips in play??? What is going on lol i never seen a game like this
Only $1 chips in the 1/2 game here for whatever reason
