This chair is actually very old copy of Luterma factory chair, which was very popular here in Estonia in the beginning of 20 century. The original cost a months salary for poor people, so many people tried to copy that, instead of buying original chair.

Its too bad I'm nearly 85 or I'd be after you...amazing skill and knowledge, great sense of humor and you're adorable!...and again I learned something new. The folded sandpaper, the stain and the sanding rather than sawing for perfect fit, which I will try on my current project. Admirable! These may be small, well known techniques used by many others but I'm still learning. Well done! And thanks for sharing!😊

You truly are one of the best restorers I’ve seen! Your skills are impeccable especially after I watched you and your apprentice “ Ahti” repair the chair from the war with the piece of shrapnel lodged in it! That poor chair was so crooked and beat up and you brought it back to its former glory! Thank you for restoring pieces back to what they should be without using all the major short cuts for a quick fix!!! They will all last for another hundred plus yrs…awesome work

Wow. That chair wasn't just old. It looked it like had been left out in the elements for a long time. I'm amazed it's worth fixing up. Good on you for making it work!

Great video to watch on restoring an old chair. I am doing a joint project with my wife for the first time to restore a 50 year+ old chair that we didn't want to throw away and nobody wanted.. Thanks for all the tips, I'll be looking to implement many of them.. As the English say: Waste not, want not..

When you was brushing stain onto the new wood, wondered if the can had been sitting on shelf too long. ( It appeared to act as though wood had slick surface) but was you wiped off excess, seemed as though wood did absorb sufficient amount.
Thank you for showing your skills.😊

I think your work is outstanding and somewhat unique. Your presentation is excellent - always. Infusing it with gentle and practical humor is a wonderful strategy. I wholeheartedly encourage you to make more direct instructional videos. Perhaps on just veneering. Or just repairing broken or damaged pieces or parts. You probably have contemplated offering courses. If so I believe they would be well received. Folks would gladly pay to Lear from an experienced professional who knows how to present his work, his workmanship, his techniques and ultimately himself.

Thank godness, no paint. YT is full of video's from people who say they "restore" a old piece...and then stuff it with paint. I mean...its not a big task, to hide everything with paint. To restore, on the other hand, it is so many tips and tricks to learn , so much to understand. Its art, in my opinion.
To paint a forniture, thats not what one can call "restoring" , not really , it look more like re invent something, right?...And when i see people take a beautiful old furniture, with gorgeous whole wood in it, and just cover it all up...i feel like its kind of destroyed, not restored...
I love it, when one try to make the piece look like it did when it was new. The one who made it once a long time ago,is respected.
When one can see the unik pattern of the wood.
It makes me feel so...content, sort of.
And its so much to learn about too...
    Thank you !

Have a question. I notice you always shellac after your done.
My question is, what exactly is shellac? Do you make your own or can you pay it? I’ve always used a acrylic water base type of varnish. I want to learn to do it right. Thanks so much for your videos, love em!!

Shellac is created by worms. It is like brown flaky substance, that is dissolved in spirit. It was widely used between 1849-1940. After that , synthetic laquers arrived.

The real deal restoration is keep the pieces original as much as it can. I saw many of your works and if I were you, I would stripped the top of the veneer from sitting font and flattened with a little steam, glued on a new hard piece after a light sand then glued on it's place. You would catch approximately the same color with frame. This would worked on 600 drill holes chair also.

I think that was a good idea to split the wood at an angle to get the new wood to fit into the notches. I am curious as to why you did not reinforce the wood along the front rail after you sliced the new piece. Perhaps I am just the one person who habitually tries to prop my feet on anything near by me.
I will be using your idea in the future.
