    James Franklin Baskett (February 16, 1904 - July 9, 1948) was an American actor who portrayed Uncle Remus, singing the song "Zip-a-Dee-Doo-Dah" in the 1946 Disney feature film Song of the South.
    In recognition of his portrayal of Remus, he was given an Honorary Academy Award in 1948, making him the first black male performer to receive an Oscar.

      I have bought a couple of VCR copies of Song of the South. As a White kid born in the sixties, I loved his character and his talent. But, people have to destroy the accomplishments of Black and other minority artists of all types in the name of social justice.

    • @uselesscause3178
      @uselesscause3178 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      @@mikewilcox9348 Interestingly enough the NAACP has no public stance on the movie anymore. Probably because, both sides are right, for different reasons. Yeah, it IS tasteless and insulting, to show slavery as a happy situation. It is also insulting to ME that all Southern white people are seen as approving of slavery and ignorant of the fact humans are humans, no matter the color. That also wasn't (isn't) true.
      But to BAN it relegates James Baskett to a forgotten past, which is unforgivable. He had such a huge talent - and to this day those of us old enough will still be caught singing Zippity Doo Da, when inspired. In my minds eye I can still hear his deep voice singing and his see his footsteps almost skipping along as he sings. He died in 1948 and we STILL sing it.
      THAT is what I call legendary.

    Why can’t you look past stereotypes on how Uncle Remus was portrayed in Song of the South?
    James Baskett portrayed Uncle Remus as a kind and caring southern storyteller.
    When I see how kind Uncle Remus is toward Johnny in Song of the South, I’m reminded of my maternal grandfather since he was a kind southern gentleman like Uncle Remus.
    Even four years after losing granddaddy, these stories give me comfort in missing him.

      Song of The South is definitely one of the Best Disney Movies that was ever made. It’s got a little bit of everything packed in one film. I remember when, they released it in the 70s again to the Movie Theaters. I was so, glad, I got to see it on the big screen. But, I do remember it seemed like it came and went and, no one ever really spoke of it again. I always have had this one ☝️ in the back of my mind and, I think all generations should have the privilege to see it.

      Johnny loved and respected Uncle Remus, and looked up to him as a father figure. I sometimes wonder if having this film shown to the boomer generation helped progress desegregation and the civil rights movement. After all, Johnny even befriended the African American boy who worked at the house. They played together as if they were equals. I imagine that was a HUGE deal in the 40s, and may have taught children that friends can be found anywhere and with anyone.

    i understand why song of the south is so controversial, since it is based on African American stories that were collected, and in a way show the language and pathos that was said and the struggle and endurance and in a way show a way of life that we can never forget. though that action had in later years gained controversy too.
    but it is worth mentioning that these books and film are set in the Reconstruction period after the civil war, post slavery, though that's easy to miss. even though it is said that the people are sharecroppers and not slaves, even though most of them are of the age from going from one demograph to another, since the word may be difference the implication is still there.
    and now i understand why people want the film banned, however it has amazing performances from Hattie McDaniel and James Baskett, the first person of African heritage to win an Oscar, even though it was honorary. but still.
    people love to bash the the film, and talk about "Uncle Remus", but never talk about poor Toby, now he's given a rough ride through the film. He's a child servant who looks after Jonny, no parents of his own that we ever see. has to take responsibility, but not good enough to go to Jonny's birthday.
    And Jonny is a little insect who whinges about his lack of "daddy", you've got two parents in your life kid, suck it up. thinks Remus exists to tell him stories, and runs into a field with a bull wearing red. The kid is that stupid.
    So i like the film, but poor Toby played by Glenn Leed deserves better, but the film is good. And i can't hate on a film that has Hattie MacDanial's

    1. Shrek 2
    2. Mary Poppins
    3. E.T the Extra Terrestrial
    While some movies on this list are banned for reasonable things, but some are ridiculous. Take Shrek 2 for example, it is understandable to be offensive to be joked at, but you cannot get the government involved to ban it, that's just stupid! For movies like the barnyard battle, it seems reasonable because it is a reference to a history war battle with Nazi-Germans' outfits (My mistake if this is too much or it is incorrect, it is what I thought happened back then).

    "Song of the South" is an excellent movie. It was actually set sometime after the civil war. And yes it did show truths about certain ideals for that time period. The story was well written and if people would view the movie without looking for racial components, or complaining about how it made blacks look, they would understand that it was a very uplifting movie. I saw the movie when I was a child and loved it. "Zippity Doda Zippity Day" is a very catchy tune, and the stories Uncle Remus told about ber (brother) rabbit and ber bear were great. I would show the movie to my black friends (because I was able to get a copy), who told me that they had never seen the movie, and not one was offended and they genuinely liked the movie. So my question is this ... is the film truly offensive or are white liberals trying to control what people think or hide their own prejudice. Just sayin'.

    Sadly, the Uncle Remus stories (Brer Rabbit, Brer Fox, Brer Bear, etc) were part of African American culture from the 19th century, handed down via word of mouth over the years. The idea was that black people taught life lessons to their kids by way of those stories. Eventually a large publisher put out a book of them around the turn of the century. Disney then bought the rights and made Song of the South, which incorrectly portrayed life in slavery as happy-go-lucky. Hattie McDaniel, who won an Oscar for the role of the housemaid Mammie in Gone With The Wind, played basically the same part in Song of the South.

    • @MrMartell77
      @MrMartell77 ปีที่แล้ว

      Incorrect, the time set in the movie was post civil war, they were showing that the former slaves, then share-croppers, were much happier. But it also showed how they weren't quite equals. Not all former slaves had the same experience, but Song of the South was supposed to show how the end of slavery wasn't only just, but a massive improvement for all concerned.

    People who deemed song of the South offensive because it portrays a kindly black man in southern America years after slavery was abolished, its ridiculous how people can't escape wanting to be offended by something.
    They did the same thing with aunt Jamima and uncle Ben, deeming it offensive to have black people on food packaging because they somehow imagine there's context for slavery, when in reality all they've done is erased two black characters people recognise fondly.

    A point of fact regarding the commentary on the Mickey Mouse movie - Dixie was by no means a southern song. It had been written not too long before the Civil War broke out and it was a big favorite in both the Union and the Confederacy, especially amongst the soldiers. The tune is catchy and highly singable. It is of course natural that over the years it would be associated as a 'southern' song, but at the time of the Civil War, it was a national song ("national" is the best term i can come up with for it, although a part of the controversy was whether one's nation was one's state or the broader union).

  • @taylowendy

    Song of the South should be number one. Not only is it the only Disney film that has not been released in the US on VHS and DVD, but it is the only Disney film made by Disney himself that includes a whole family. There is a mother and a father, no step parents. In every early Disney film, Disney released films with only one parent alive and a step parent.
    Song of the South is a beautiful film and the stories told about Bear Rabbit, Bear Fox, and Bear Bear, are lessons in life. Not only lessons in life, but stories about how the slaves endured life. It’s a true heartfelt and moving film. You really have to sit and think about what is going on and not being outright said. It’s really a movie where you have to use your brain to understand the beauty of it. It’s sad that it’s been banned for so long. I spoke to a younger colleague about the film and she didn’t know about the film. She knew about song but not the film. I asked her if she ever wondered what the concept was behind Splash Mountain? And she didn’t know. When I explained about the film, she was really interested in seeing it.

    7:26 Today's America may ban "Song of the South," but they can NEVER erase the impact the infamous song "Zip A Dee Doo Dah" has had on the people who grew up watching the film, or like me, at least grew up hearing the song being referenced and/or used in countless ways (such was the way of the 1990s) and even in singalongs EVERYWHERE! Even when I'm feeling down and out I sing the song in my head repeatedly to cheer me up. You can take the movie out of today and tomorrow, but you can't take it out of yesterday

    Marry Poppins banned to promote more cartoon series from/in China, that's a dumb reason as it doesn't effect that at all. There's a lot of dumb reasons on why these films were banned. As for Song of the South, I've never seen it but I wanna judge for myself instead of taking other people's word; I go by the story itself and know the difference from fiction and reality. Everybody says it shows blacks love being slaves, but again...that's fiction and I go by stories for entertainment with my opinions. My brother-in-law said The Batman with Robert Pattinson was not so great and not worth seeing, but I wanted to judge for myself and liked it. That's another reason of *WHY* I make my own thoughts on films.

    *E.T.:* One of the greatest films ever made and one of the most successful in history. Everything about it is amazing and iconic.
    *Sweden:* Says it's bad for kids because adults are perceived as scary threats to the alien who is trying to run away from them.
