I love Bette Midler. She was great on any show she appeared on and was awesome on Carson. And Robin Williams. He was so fantastic when he appeared. I rolled on the floor and laughed my ass off whenever he was on. Too bad he’s gone now. Rest In Peace, Robin.

Robin is so missed, but Bette she did such a sweet thing for Johnny that night, even though she was having so much trouble holding her own tears back, she finally got to shed hers as she walked off stage, but she was a trooper for letting Johnny have his night, I know it was hard, I cried my eyes out for her.

At 25:13, the duet sung at first , in A Cappella by Carson and Midler, later accompanied by the band, which keeps it quieter, mellower, not drowning out the subtle, nuanced, unrehearsed, spontaneous serious level of focus the two have at keeping it real, in tune, the right tempo.....I mean the true meaning of the lyrics, the show of camaraderie, friendship, admiration, respect, a display of Agapi love of, love of people of the world, the enactment of showing by example what brotherhood and sisterhood really means...... it’s so good , and good to watch them stay with each other emotionally yet for all they’ve got is to show the audience and this world that they still are professionals, have globe trotting world class exposure and experience to pull this moment off, looking at ease, are comfortable, seemingly making it all effortless, all the while they’ve captivated this audience, their television audience , me too for that matter, it’s so quiet now you could hear a pin drop, and when they finish .....the feels radiating off of them both, the audience response feels it too and bounces it back....me I can’t hold back my watering eyes, stop the video, and cry like a babe, it’s so beautiful to behold. I had give myself a minute to compose myself lab because I couldn’t see to type. Anyway, I had to get that off of my chest. I’m continuing the video

      Great memories!
I will never forget it. This was the night that I graduated from high school. Most of us all quit partying for an hour to stop and watch it. Half of the football players on our team (including me) were in tears. Lol!
This was the last show, other than scattered episodes of "Wheel of Fortune", that our entire family watched together every night, and they all just happened to be in town for my graduation.
"Cheers" was another one, but I was the last one to go off to college. So when it ended in '93, We didn't get to watch it all together.

While there are many notable Tonight Show segments, this one with Ed Ames segment is, perhaps, among the most memorable. The really funny thing, that many people might not know...with Johnny improvising "I didn't even know you were Jewish"...is that Ed Ames IS Jewish: Born Edmund Urich, he's the last surviving one of the Ames Brothers singing group, will turn 86 in July of 2023. I've never been able to find out if Johnny knew, at the time, that Ed actually is Jewish.

At 0:54 seconds, and the Native American guest throws that tomohawk/hatchet/axe and it lands on the hand drawn image of a cowboy caricature representation of a life size target victim.... and the area that the axe lands is essentially located near the center/below the belt region, and near the groin....the the thrower reacts to where the spot is and is then shocked, involuntarily convulsing a quirked jerk, repulsed, mutters something....split seconds later the audience gets it, they start with mixed embarrassed responses of trying not to laugh and twitter, yet thinking.....did he do that on purpose....was that just a fluke.....anyway however you slice it.... epic failure, one on a million, a lucky shot, I didn’t mean to turn you on.... what do you say after such an exhibition. I didn’t even watch the entire video. I had to come onboard and make a comment.....I can’t wait to hear the audience squeal, watch the guest squirm, stuttering his apologies, start crying, gulping, gasping, entering into paroxysms , his eyes roll up, finally he just faints. An astute camera tec off camera realizes before anyone else does, what’s really happening here, dashes onstage, and catches the poor fellow before he hits the floor, and his employers get sued up the yin yang to their eyeballs.....the audience goes hog wild, witnesses the save, the tech thinks.... I’ll most certainly get a raise in salary for this one. I’m just goin on and on. Ok I’ll stop. I’m gonna watch the rest.

Ed Ames wasn't a Native American, but he played one on TV back in 1965, as Mingo during the first few seasons of "Daniel Boone" on NBC.
Even so, Ames' tomahawk throw was perhaps the greatest sustained-laugh bit of all time.
As for Carson telling Ames "I didn't even know you were Jewish", well, come to find out, sure enough, that Ames' parents were indeed Jewish emigres from Ukraine.
