Not something I talk about often, especially in public. I used to work in Hollywood as a make up artist. I was helping a friend on the set one day of a shoot that Diane Keaton was directing. During a break she sat down on the floor next to me she spoke to me as if we were old friends. She is so real, so kind, so good. One of my fondest Hollywood memories and I'm sure she doesn't even remember that short moment in time.

When my youngest brother was 18 he wanted to know what it was that was exactly wrong with our uncle - our mum's brother . My mum's never been able to be very open about him, but she explained that it was like Russell Crow's character in "A Beautiful Mind".
His schizophrenia and heroin addiction - which he overcame and I'm very proud of him for doing - was very hard on my mum and grandparents; my mum described the feeling of loving him and wanting to protect him , whilst also almost hating him at times.
I wish his life had been different. It makes me sad that he suffered so much in his 60 years. But I've come understand that there's only so much you can do. It must be so sad for Diane to see his alcoholism slowly killing him, but she seems to understand that it's probably the only way he can find a modicum of peace in such an un-quiet mind; because the illness has taken hold and it's never letting go, and somehow we have to be at peace with that.

Have you ever heard of victims of psychiatry who are falsely diagnosed, and who are victims of Injustice, domestic violence, as well as religious and political persecution, but are NOT AT ALL MENTALLY ILL?
IT'S TORTURE AND SLOW ASSASSINATION, TOTAL DESTRUCTION OF THE MISDIAGNOSED VICTIM, AND HIS/HER LIFE...
Maybe the story of your brother is true as you think, but hundreds of thousands are not!
BE AWARE OF THE psychiatrists ABUSE AND PHARMACEUTIC LIES GOING ON, AND DON'T COLLABORATE AND DON'T ALLOW THAT HOOROR. HELP FIGHT AGAINST THAT NAZI, "WHICH HUNTING" NEW WAY OF INCARCERATING AND POLITICAL PERSECUTING SOMEONE. IT'S ALSO A FAVOURITE WAY OF DOMESTIC VIOLENCE! DYSFUNCTIONAL EVIL NARCISSISTS GET RID OF THEIR BEST FAMILY MEMBER, a scape goat, by getting them destroyed like that.
Other times it's psychiatrists who "diagnose" of schizophrenic, people who simply have a political opinion they don't agree with. SIMPLY HORRIFIC.
I don't know about your brother, - although your story raises immediately some questions - but if you had the experience with someone who had real mental issues, you should be the first to want to accuse and be against the above explained serious ATROCIOUS violation of Human Rights and Civil Rights, who TORURE AND destroy mentally healthy people!!!
Please spread the word and the awareness. Thousands of the above described crimes are committed every day all over the world. I repeat: it is torture, and assassination for life (being tortured and slowly assassinated along all the decades the victim still lasts).

Perhaps she is helping raise awareness for the need of tolerence for our family members and friends who struggle with mental stability. Mental illness is very real and is caused by a physical disability that has a varied spectrum. Loving and understanding by those who are blessed with greater stability is essential for the family's dignity. It's a hard journey that tests the family's values. My brother was an alcoholic for about 50 years, his entire adult life. Listening to her describe her brother's life was paralleling my brother's journey. There was a brief moment of 6-8 months when he'd come out of the hospital and starting going to AA and it was a joyful time for those of us who cared about him to see him sober and happy. It was too short though and he fell back into the monster of drinking. In the end he was physically ill, being taken to the hospital over and over, alone in his house for weeks when he wouldn't answer the phone. It can be tough for those of us who don't have this addiction to really understand what an alcoholic is going through. Just stop, just stop, you're going to die if you don't stop means nothing to them. For many they can't stop until it kills them. Now my brother is in a small box on my lanai with the ocean, and the sun, and the trade winds to enjoy in peace.

Helen Patterson The book , The Five Love Languages covers this.
I never felt loved by my mother,,, her main love language was acts of service -if you asked her. She was a narcissist too, most likely.///////
I saw like a yin yang, here....
      An over achiever/ underachiever.
But there was some sort of inability of Dianne to be completely egotistical which makes her so much more embraceable ,,, she almost is, or is, apologetic for her achievements. As though she steps outside of herself.
Her brother stepped all the way out.
      Artistic temperaments?
      Expressing differently.
There had to be some other pathology operating there.
I’d be interested in reading her book, though.

My family did not mourn the death of my mentally ill relative. We mourned her life. It was at a time when people were placed in crowded, rat infested institutions where the mentally ill patients were mistreated. Now, we have medication. We need to talk about this more, even if it hurts to talk about it. Only then, will we see change for the better.

Diane, my brothers and your brother are very much alike. My brother is a raging alcoholic and has mental illness. He also now has brain damage due to a freak accident and tries to use it as an excuse. It isn’t an accuse when he is smart enough to hide, sneak, manipulate, lie, steal, and do anything to get his next drink.
He is also the man in town neighbors whisper about. It’s sad. I feel your pain, along with your unconditional love for your brother. Love the addict, not the addiction.

Like Diane's brother, my sister was mentally ill and was diagnosed with stage 4 bc. She never went to the doctor and when she finally did this is what she was diagnosed with. She lived for a year and a half after the diagnosis. She was always a positive soul and I loved her very much and miss her always. I totally understand the feelings that Diane has because I too have them. I lost my sister on Valentine's Day 2012. She was a hippie love child and somehow picked her last day to prove it.

Diane also has two other sisters (that I remember anyway) Robin & Dory. I went to school with them (Santa Ana High School) and when I was pledging for a sorority there, I was taken to their house to clean their bedroom. When I realized I was in Diane's old bedroom as I looked around, I was in awe because to me, she was already "famous" and that is a cherished memory from my youth. 💜

Diane: You are and were the best sister Randy could ever have. I think your wishing you could have been "a better sister" translates (for me ) to, "I wish I could have stopped Randy's drinking. That never was and never will happen -- and it would not matter how much you wanted it not to be so. I am powerless over other people and the decisions that they make in their lives. I am in sober recovery for decades and my sister brought me into recovery, picked up again and is gone. Gone. Decades. Gone. I keep her in prayer but just like you -- I have a life and I have made a life understanding that my sister's life choices were her own and I have to respect her decisions while taking care of myself. And by the way, she never once asked me for my opinion about how she lived her life and it was never my job to offer one or try to "fix" her. Blessings ✨🧡✨
