  • I changed the transmission fluid on my Cadillac STS. I used Castrol transmission fluid because it has III3H, which is required in my transmission. Total time it took me was between 30-40 minutes.
    Transmission fluid amzn.to/2ipvRHW
    Torx bit set amzn.to/2iPvRmg
    Fluid pump amzn.to/2iU1rSl
    Here is a list of the material I used:
    40 Torx bit & ratchet
    40 Torx wrench
    Drain pan container
    Castrol transmission fluid
    Fluid pump
    Car ramps
    Tire block
    Towels
    Gloves
    Movers blanket & tarp

    Old school tip: after draining your fluid, put the car in drive & reverse by holding the brake so the trans converter can spin out the rest of the fluid. You may have to do a few times. 😉

    Thank you so much for your videos! I have an 07 STS v6 and 08 V. I love these cars and am trying to make them last forever! Both are on their factory engine and transmissions. I've been paying others to do maintenance for years, but Im learning how to do some basic stuff on my own to save money and get a better feel of my cars (if that makes sense). Thanks again!

    Great video. Very detailed but I believe that you need to have the engine running when you check the final fill level at the fill plug. If engine not running you will not have the fluid at the proper level. Once again great video and well detailed.

    You can also use dex6 fluid. It's backwards compatible with dex3. GM recommends making this change as the aforementioned is a far superior transmission fluid. It doesn't start breaking down until 1000 degrees Fahrenheit, which it will obviously never see.

    Gm recommends upgrading to Dexron vi for all automatic cars filled with Dexron iii factory filled cars. I dod on my 1996 4t80e and 2002 4t65e. As the specifications say, it will extend the life of clutch plates by 50%, and the car will have considerably smoother shift points - which it does.

    Great video, and nice job stressing not to drain a trans till you know you can refill it. FYI, For tight spaces like that fill plug, keep in mind the shortest weapon to attack it with is gonna be that torx insert in a box end wrench. Then stick another box end over the open end for a little added leverage.

    Man, oxmanagain...I'm dealing with making the decision to do my on transmission fluid change or either spend about $200 at the Kansas City Cadillac dealership. Not sure what year your STS is, but I have a 2006 STS4 V8. I scanned it and got a P0897 transmission code that is specific about the fluid. The car has a weird shudder when idling and driving...its not very constant. My check engine light is on and I CAN'T STAND ANY LIGHTS BEING ON! LOL
    Do you think I can do it myself? Love your DIY vids, bro!

    • @oxmanagain
      @oxmanagain  7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Thanks first off. I have a 2005 V8. I have a shudder on mine and from the research I have done I think it's one of these problems in the links I provided. But to answer your question, if you take your time the transmission fluid and filter is not that hard of a job to do. But, remember make sure you can take off the fill plug before you drain the fluid. Thanks for all the support. I feel you on the check engine lights. Haha

      oxmanagain Thank you for replying! The information in the links are gonna be very helpful. Is there a certain time period to get the recalls taken care of? Also, I watched your video on replacing your struts...loved how easy you make it look. Now, my question is, how much more difficult is the process when you have the electronic struts or shocks? Thank you for taking the time with this.

    • @oxmanagain
      @oxmanagain  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I don't think that there is a time limit on the recalls but I could be wrong. I think the electronic struts only add a few minutes to the job. No problem, ask as many question that come to your mind.

    • @oxmanagain
      @oxmanagain  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think it's best if you completely drain the transmission. In order to completely drain it you will have to take the pan down because if you just do the plug you will only drain about half of the transmission. In another video I actually took the transmission pan down I'll send you that link if you're interested in it.

The cats would throw a low efficiency code p0420 is what I think it is, well thats what I get on mine but won't make it misfire. Best of luck with your car!

    • @oxmanagain
      @oxmanagain  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for watching. After putting in the transmission fluid the first time. I then cycled the fluid through all the gears and then rechecked to see if I needed more fluid. The additional fluid was added until it started to pour out of the fill hole. The amount just happened to be 3/4 qts. Thanks again.

    I have a question for you, I have 2011 STS 3.6 and wanted to change the transmission fluid but I cannot locate the fill plug on the transmission. at least not a plug that even resembles the one in your video or in the location of the plug in your video. Ive checked both the driver and passengers side. I did see what appears to be a plug on the drivers side but it is a maybe 3/4, 5/8 raised bolt just above the exhaust pipe and it is easily accessible. Could this be a design change ? appreciate your input.

    • @oxmanagain
      @oxmanagain  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think you're right on the design change. Your model is a V6 and I have a V8. Just find the drain plug and look in the general vicinity and you should see it. Just make sure to not open the drain plug until you find that elusive fill plug.

      You know I would hate to give you the wrong information. The fill plug is so vital that you know where it is and that you can get to it. I believe that they did make a change for your year so without me actually looking at it I'm sorry but I can't tell you where it is. Whatever you do do not drain your transmission fluid out until you are a hundred percent sure you know where the fill plug is and you are confident that you can get to it.

      I believe you have a different transmission (the 5l50) . There is a plastic fill plug you can pull with needle nose piles. Make sure the car is level, do a fill, start and row through the gears. When you check the level, you should do it with the car on and the transmission at 30 to 50 C. It will get to operating temp really quickly and the fluid will start coming out of the service port (on the side).

    Hey man i kind of have the same problem as flyshitonly773, i have a 2006 Cadillac STS 3.6 AWD, i just changed the spark plugs because when i pressed on the gas the check engine light flashed and it felt like a lack/delay in power. Well changing the plugs got rid of that problem but now at stop lights my car slightly jerks a little every now and then. I read in some forums that it could be old transmission fluid, do you think changing the trans oil would fix this problem?

    • @oxmanagain
      @oxmanagain  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      If you're at the recommended mileage for a transmission change, it can't hurt. I have a similar thing happen to me so at every fill up I just put in one of those gas treatments and all the shaking goes away. Give it a try, they only a few bucks and it's a lot easier than anything else. Have a good one.

I would reallly appreciate ur answers

      RiCKyG the only pan that I have dropped is the transmission pan. I haven't had to deal with the oil pan but based on how easy it was to do the transmission pan. I would assume the oil pan would be just as easy. It takes more time then anything it's a tedious type of a task. All you do is take screws out take the gasket off put your new gasket on tighten it back to specs

    you just make 50 % of the entire job !!! all the old oil still in the torque converter and in the rest of your transmission !!! when you start your car the new oil gonna mix with the old oil .... you need to flush your old oil too before running with your car

    • @oxmanagain
      @oxmanagain  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      You are right that's why I made another video where I actually dropped the transmission pan and I changed the filter. To me changing the filter is extremely important, I've had bad experiences with just going to the dealer and having them completely get the transmission fluid out but not change the filter. The most ideal situation would be to change your filter and get a complete transmission fluid flush which would include the torque converter being flushed out as well.

    • @J0SHUAKANE
      @J0SHUAKANE 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@oxmanagain no, do not ever flush a transmission. It breaks up too much gunk at once & can clog your valve body. Drop the pan & change the fluid & filter 5 times if you have to.

  • @masterofnothing3565
    @masterofnothing3565 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    u didn't check to see what the level of the fluid was before you drained it that's a no no and you have to check the fluid level first on a level surface u do this by warming it up putting it in every gear for a few seconds and remove the fill plug if it spills out its at the proper level if not its low and you will never know when its jacked up at the front at a 27 degree angle please don't make videos unless u really know what u are doing

      There is no dipstick to the transmission, you can only check and fill from underneath the car. Only the motor oil, brake fluid, power steering fluid and antifreeze can be filled from the top (under the hood). It doesn't make sense but that is how you do it.
