lol yes! my brother and his girlfriend compete every year on who reads more and he reads like 500 page long books and she reads like 150 pages long books 😂 he always complains that it's not fair
"I don't go on my phone because when I go on my phone I wanna die" this is unironically why I got back into reading after college. I was extremely depressed and used my phone to basically disassociate. I ended every day feeling like all I had done was work because mindlessly scrolling social media didn't feel real.
@@Shelf_Improvement I think unmoderated phone usage as a maladaptive coping mechanism is bad. I've noticed that when I use my phone less, I feel better.
Is this the most helpful non-toxic video from booktube? Yes. Did I want to cry everytime Carley told us not to be hard on ourselves and just vibe because it’s exactly what we need in life right now? Also yes.
omg idk if this advice will help but what got me back into reading was young adult books, i think it’s because what i left off reading as a young teen so getting back into reading that way helped me ease into regular fiction
You’re so right GB (girl boss) about choosing books you DO like and abandoning books you don’t. A lot of why I used to really struggle with reading was I was reading books I THOUGHT I should be reading (like the classics) and I was super bored by them??? Like why am I forcing myself??? My life is simply TOO SHORT to be reading books I don’t like!
I actually like classics but I get you, they can be dense. It's ok if you don't like them people should stop shamming other people for what they read. I also feel like most of the people that shame others for not liking classics haven't even read the books
The one thing that motivates me to read is like imagining the bookmark in my book going lower and lower or like seeing the pages left to read become lesser and idk it's the most motivating thing ever
last year i set my goodreads goal to 100 books and it stressed me out so much. I wasn't dnf-ing books and reading 2-3 stars. I did complete that goal but I hardly felt accomplished. This year i was compassionate and set the goal to 10. I'm on my 55th book now ! and i read what i like,i drop a book if it's meh. reading before bed really helped with my sleeping problems as well!!
I love the positive vibe here, the book community can be really toxic sometimes by comparing how much books do you read, but you're a girlboss as always 🥰 Hope you are okay :)
libraries are awesome!!!!!! my librarian always remembers me and loves when i tell her how much i loved the books. and it really helps out the community!
My best tip for reading is that EBOOKS AND AUDIOBOOKS ARE REAL BOOKS! They count just as much as physical forms of reading and you should absolutely read that way if it fits in better with your lifestyle. I read 150+ books per year and over half of them are audiobooks that I listen to while I do my work at home. Don't let the elitists discourage you (and remember that you can get audiobooks and ebooks for free through your library as well)!
you could do a video about reading poetry? i find it so hard to go through poetry books, while prose i can read quite easily! and your tips are very good and make me feel comforted in my reading habits! thank you so much girlboss
This is some of the sweetest, non toxic advice on how to read more that I’ve seen. So many videos are just “force yourself to read every day, even if you have other things going on make yourself read”. It takes time, it’s a process to read more. You’re not going to immediately be reading several books a day like how some of these booktubers seem to expect. You build up your reading habits.
I love reading as a hobby bc it's just for myself. The fact that it took me months to decide not to finish a book earlier this year and move on means nothing to anyone but me. The fact that I've read 3 princess diaries books and I'm almost 30, who cares? It's my hobby and the fact that I'm even reading is great!
I always liked books but I always thought "I don´t have time" in high school. Funny enough I went from reading 1 book a year to 25 books, plus college readings every single week. When you enjoy something, you always have the time. Also, I appreciate your kindness in this video, people that don´t read much often feel left out or inferior!
i’ve learned that variety is essential for me nowadays to keep me motivated to read. i need books with different pacing, themes and length to keep me invested in reading. and there’s nothing wrong with going from reading Virgina Woolf to Rick Riordan next, it’s called versatility xx
Same! There was a month this year where I read a genre-bending memoir about domestic abuse, a YA buddy comedy about werewolves, a space opera political thriller, and a Sally Rooney book. Variety is what makes books interesting!
I'm so easily distractable and recently I've started playing TH-cam videos of reading music or soundscapes in the background while I read. Like spooky music for horror, classical for dark academia, coffee shop sounds and jazz music for...basically everything else LOL. They help me get in the mood of a book, and when I combine them with binaural beats and maybe a pomodoro timer, focusing is sooo much easier.
This is really good advice. No guilty pleasures, it doesn’t need to be hard.. I wish everyone knew this! My husband doesn’t read much because he feels like reading should be Tolstoy and dickens…
I love how Carley doesn't inccorages consumerism and tells her viewers to read books from libraries and ebooks. It's the sustainable consumption for me.
My adhd is very bad and currently untreated, so this vid is a godsend 🙌 exactly what I need for reading more, but also building myself up to the point of shooting the short film I've had on the backburner for way too long...so thanks!
Comic books are a great way to break up a reading slump. I like bright colorful pages and lots of jokes, something that makes my crusty soul come back to life.
THE perfect advice for me atm: neurodivergent mind as well but after a long period of not being able to read…and having JUST rearranged my furniture at home where I now have my books in a nice looking bookshelf… I feel like this video just pushed me over the edge of: im trying this today! wish me luck 🍀 ❤
100% agree drop a book if you’re not enjoying it! I was talking to my friend about this and he said “why waste time on a book you don’t like when there are so many books out there to read”
Something i found really helpful was listening to audiobooks with libby or hoopla (through the public library). I always felt like if i was reading i should be doing something else, but with audiobooks i could listen to them when cooking or walking to work
Hopping in on a book is exactly my motto when I come across any bookstore. And I end up reading amazing books that I would not probably even grab if I put myself on a mood or a vibe. Trust this tip you guys, it will help you a lot 😊
100% recommend listening to audiobooks, especially while reading a print/ e-copy. I can Completely tune out distractions and it has probably doubled my reading speed having someone narrate the story for me. Also, can can listen to a story while doing chores or a puzzle or something
audiobooks!!!! helped me pick up reading again, so great for when you're cleaning, doing laundry, going for a walk, and you don't even have to pay if you're using a library app like Libby!!
One thing that helped me is getting a kindle. I know everyone's like omg the smell and feel of pages, but tbh its awkward, plus it helps my brain tricking that its looking a screen. I've gone from reading 4 books a year, to 50. get a kindle queens
I think the solution is to get a kindle and if you love a book buy the physical copy, reread that every once in a while to feed those cravings and then go back to the kindle
omg my number one tip for everyone is ditching a book you don't like! I realised it helped me read way more in a year because you keep up the momentum.
For me getting a kindle really helped me read more. Its so accessible because it makes you stay curious by actually reading the content and not glorifying the cover.
As a fellow ADHD reader I can sometimes find it difficult when books suffer from Stephen King syndrome. In a lot of cases, I get this feeling that a book is going to have a satisfying section. The problem is bolting through the boring parts where the author talks about the transcendental nature of antiquing. Usually instead of dropping those titles, a great technique I use is reading a simple, short story to recharge my batteries. So if I get tired a third of the way into the Count of Monte Cristo, I can always read Fantastic Mr. Fox to break my slump
Yes- honestly also an adhd reader I am very much a mood reader so I end up reading multiple books at once so I don’t get bored. The only issue though is there is less of a chance of me finishing the book the more I start and I start a lot. I’ve always had the same issue so would start tons of books as a kid but struggled to finish them (though I got a lot better by about 8, when I got super into mysteries, because those kind of books you have to Finish really). I read 50 books last year and 20 so far this year.
I got back into reading (for this current moment) by picking up some silly YA trilogy box set that my mom bought me for Christmas when I was 17... but, like, yo, I have read the first two books in under a week. And I 👏🏼 LIKE 👏🏼 IT 👏🏼!
Update that you’re highly unlikely to see: Finished the silly box set. It wasn’t that great, but I’m 50 pages into Normal People, and it is absolutely living up to the hype in a way that I was afraid was impossible. That is all. Thanks, girl boss.
I’m in my 30s and I started reading for the first time in my life this July. Now I’m reading one book per week/fortnight. Here’s some of my tips: 1. Get a library card. If I’m not enjoying a book, I don’t feel bad about DNFing it because it was free! That way I can pick a different book that I hopefully enjoy more. 2. Start reading a book along with an audiobook. I was struggling to concentrate for more than 30 seconds and couldn’t get through a single page and this really helped train my brain. 3. Figure out what you like. Read a few different genres so you can figure it out. I was trying to read modern, character driven books and I was So Bored. Found out I prefer thriller/crime/horror books much better. They keep me turning the pages. 4. If you find a book you LOVE, pick another book by the same author. The writing style and story will often be similar and you’re pretty likely to enjoy it again! :)
I'm Brazilian and I'm learning English, your English is ssooooo easy to understand. I loved the video, I started reading books last year and I'm always like "I have to read more"
I keep thinking that I won't have time to read all the books I want and then I don't read anything because I keep thinking about my existence. I hate myself.
That's definitely me. In highschool I had alot of bullies and anxiety and haters so my life required alot of escapism i.e reading. Now I'm grown , working and happy so reading for entertainment is soooo hard lol
I read but I’m such a slow reader in English… this video is so reassuring and relatable since I also have ADHD and it made me feel so much better for needing to stop books half way! Thank you so much! Keep up with the irony, sarcasm and honesty 🤍🔥
The relief of finishing school fully has motivated me to start reading knowing I only ever have to read stuff I enjoy from now on. I read Animal Farm for the first time today and although it took me way longer than I would have liked, it's made me excited to keep reading for fun like I did as a kid.
tip 5 is THE vibe for me. I was upset I wasn't reading more while at the same time pushing myself to finish stuff I just wasn't enjoying. Changes the whole game
“Who are you reading for?” This is an incredible reminder because there are times when I absolutely pick books that I hope will make people perceive me as an intellectual. In reality, we’re all smart whether or not we read certain books
i have been in a reading slump recently so this is so helpful! also what u said about guilty pleasures literally blew my mind in the best way possible. ur so right
Knowing when to put a book down is important. A useful rule of thumb is subtract your age from 100 and that’s how many pages you should give it. That’s why people in their 90s just do sudokus all day.
Also. Audiobooks are a valid reading option too! I love listening to them when I’m doing boring housework, and honestly, listening has helped me get through and enjoy books that I’ve had trouble reading in print.
Another tip bring a book everywhere with you. Put it in your school bag, your purse, bring it to work. When you have a little bit of free time you can read a couple pages instead of scrolling.
I have adhd to and I recently found out that something that help me a lot to read more is setting a goal of reading everyday, like two chapters, small one that I can easily achieve and overtake
Totally agree with quitting a book that you aren't enjoying. I used to feel chained to books that I was hating because I felt like I HAD to finish them. Giving myself permission give up on books I'm not enjoying has been life-changing for me. There are so many books in the world, so if you're not enjoying the one you're reading, chances are there is another one out there that you will love. Life is too short to read books you don't enjoy.
I resonate with Carley and everyone in the comments section! I'm guilty of getting books from the library, sometimes waiting for 4 months until it's my turn, only to start them and not finish them. The fact that I need to return them in a set amount of time (which would seem like the obvious thing to do - how long can you read a book for?) really demotivates me. I annoy myself and probably others waiting in line for my book, I feel so guilty :( !
My tip is mix in super short books for that dopamine hit! There are so many INCREDIBLE, hard hitting books that are less than 100 pages! My partner also learned that short stories really work for his attention span!
Also, there is NO SHAME in re-reading books. Whenever I’m really struggling I reach for one of my childhood favorites. It is so comforting and eases a lot of pressure. I have gained so much from re-reading childhood favorites, now from the perspective of an adult. There’s also so much I don’t remember so it’s still exciting.
Accelerated Reader when I was in elementary/middle school was such a big reason that I fell out of love with reading. Knowing you are going to be quizzed on a book that should only be read for fun was so stressful and took me out of the experience on the page. I'm lucky that now that I'm in college (and still learning online) I get more time to actually read for fun. For the first time in a long time, I wake up and I'm excited because I know I get to read. But, even now, I have times when I go through book slumps. I just went like three months without reading a single book, but then in September, I read 12 novels. It is so so so important to know that reading is an activity that is going to fluctuate depending on your schedule/mindset/life/etc., and that's okay! Reading one book or one hundred doesn't matter. What matters is if you enjoyed reading.
Totally agree on just dropping a book if you're not feeling it. At most I give it until page 75 or so. If I'm not invested at all by then, I'll never be.
perfect timing, carley. I've been struggling for years and feeling like I didn't read enough and lately I've been trying not to be so hard on myself and just enjoying and getting into the world the book is trying to show me. this video helped a lot. love u
How yo read more.. Everyone: schedule a time and read everyday. Carley: read when you have free time and you don’t have to do it everyday. Honestly, this video makes me want to read more and the other ones only overwhelm me.
Tip #4 is one of my biggest tips. It really is important to like what you’re reading. There’s been a couple of times where I get to pg 100 of something, then drop it and move on to the next. Life is too short ! Enjoy what you’re reading !
i would actually say to read something that you've always wanted to read/idolized. for me it was anna karenina and eve though it was really hard and took me a while, finishing it felt like a pretty big accomplishment and made me realize that i can read anything. i've been reading consistently since.
it took me THREE YEARS to find out this tips by myself after a big (yes, three-year) reading slump and I wished so much this video was up sooner, but, just putting it out there, this video has literally all the usefull tips everyone who's trying to read more or come out of a reading slump needs, like, seriously the tip about reading intentionally is sooo true, I was telling myself I would read for fun after I read stuff for college, but then I got tired and would always go watch netflix the one about dropping a book, I SWEAR, WHY did nobody told me this before, this is simply the best tip, that should be obvious, but it isn't somehow
i came across this video near the end of october, and your tip on training your brain/ease into reading really resonated with me! its now november 17th as im writing this, and ive already read 7 books this month!! in my girl boss moment now thank you sm
I work in a fruit and veg shop and you saying a few videos back how you get paranoid when the shop worker doesn’t say “have a nice day” lives rent free in my head 😂 Ive found myself calling it out really loudly as they’re walking out when I forget, another great video by the way
Omg I love your channel lol thank youu for mentioning the book hangover thing. I literally don't do "book hangovers" like ever even with my favorite books. I just move on right away and it's exactly what you said, I don't always start right away but I don't let a previous book stop me from reading another book. I will say about dnfing though, I have dnfed so much and am trying to stop because I have had the opposite experience as you, it makes me not be able to get through any books now so I've had to start marking books I've dnfed as read on goodreads even though I have never liked doing that personally. I just wouldn't get through my tbr if I didn't because I never finish anything
This is definitely me lmao. Watching videos about reading more instead of reading more. Guilty as charged. I have ADHD too and reading is a struggle even though I love reading. I question myself a lot bc of it. Like " do I like the idea of reading or reading itself". Even though I know I LOVE reading. Does it even make sense
I have ADHD. I’ve read 70 plus books this year despite it being my final year in uni. I simply think to myself when i am aimlessly scrolling on twitter or whatever, that, hey, I’m literally reading right now and i’m enjoying it! And then transfer over to a book. It makes it seem more casual and if i’m just getting invested in AITA posts i will similarly get invested in a good book!

:)
I like to read 50 pages every day and mostly in the morning ! I'm currently reading The Picture of Dorian Gray which is amazing !! i love it
One of my favorite classics!
I'm Brazilian and I'm learning English, your English is ssooooo easy to understand.
I loved the video, I started reading books last year and I'm always like "I have to read more"
“I rage against any form of structure” hahahh but same same same
This is the video I needed and wanted!! Currently my brain and books don’t 🤝
honestly same but we're trying
I keep thinking that I won't have time to read all the books I want and then I don't read anything because I keep thinking about my existence.
I hate myself.
That's definitely me. In highschool I had alot of bullies and anxiety and haters so my life required alot of escapism i.e reading. Now I'm grown , working and happy so reading for entertainment is soooo hard lol
the rose cameo at the beginning yasss
I usually read for around 4 hours after waking up and 3 before falling asleep. I still feel like I need to read more.
lol thats my screentime
i honestly love your blue/green set up 😍
I read but I’m such a slow reader in English… this video is so reassuring and relatable since I also have ADHD and it made me feel so much better for needing to stop books half way! Thank you so much! Keep up with the irony, sarcasm and honesty 🤍🔥
The blues brothers shirt bestie 😍 also my protip is to read when you're at work and supposed to be doing your job ❤️❤️❤️
The relief of finishing school fully has motivated me to start reading knowing I only ever have to read stuff I enjoy from now on. I read Animal Farm for the first time today and although it took me way longer than I would have liked, it's made me excited to keep reading for fun like I did as a kid.
watch me apply these tips to books but not my uni readings
dont do your readings 💖 incite chaos
yup that's me
tip 5 is THE vibe for me.
You, Noelle and Jake literally made me fall in love with reading 😋
💖💖
Honestly ✨same✨
yes and Emmie and Helly
And Jack Edwards!
i have been in a reading slump recently so this is so helpful! also what u said about guilty pleasures literally blew my mind in the best way possible. ur so right
Knowing when to put a book down is important. A useful rule of thumb is subtract your age from 100 and that’s how many pages you should give it. That’s why people in their 90s just do sudokus all day.
This comment is great haha
Currently in the middle of 2 books and 1 graphics novel. I needed this!!!!
you've got this!
I use goodreads still bc I’m ancient but omg the tracking your books a year is literally the best part of reading
my perfectionist side can never leave an unfinished book or film. if i start with something, i literally can't function if i don't finish it 😭
i know people like this!! i cant comprehend
The power you hold. I have started so many movies without ever going past the 10 minutes marks.
thanks for reminding me i actually need to finish a book :o
anytime bestie
If I'm not invested at all by then, I'll never be.
been staring at the book on my desk all week THANK U FOR THIS
anytime bestie 💖
Just found this channel and I‘m honestly already in love with this side of the internet
perfect timing, carley. I've been struggling for years and feeling like I didn't read enough and lately I've been trying not to be so hard on myself and just enjoying and getting into the world the book is trying to show me. this video helped a lot. love u
im happy to help!! good luck bestie 💖
Enjoy what you’re reading !
this is probably the most helpful video i've ever seen on how to read more, thank u
lol honey my ENTIRE CLOSET is a tbr pile of more books than I've read this year, at that were around 50 so far
i would actually say to read something that you've always wanted to read/idolized. for me it was anna karenina and eve though it was really hard and took me a while, finishing it felt like a pretty big accomplishment and made me realize that i can read anything. i've been reading consistently since.
it took me THREE YEARS to find out this tips by myself after a big (yes, three-year) reading slump and I wished so much this video was up sooner, but, just putting it out there, this video has literally all the usefull tips everyone who's trying to read more or come out of a reading slump needs, like, seriously
the tip about reading intentionally is sooo true, I was telling myself I would read for fun after I read stuff for college, but then I got tired and would always go watch netflix
the one about dropping a book, I SWEAR, WHY did nobody told me this before, this is simply the best tip, that should be obvious, but it isn't somehow
i came across this video near the end of october, and your tip on training your brain/ease into reading really resonated with me! its now november 17th as im writing this, and ive already read 7 books this month!! in my girl boss moment now thank you sm
I work in a fruit and veg shop and you saying a few videos back how you get paranoid when the shop worker doesn’t say “have a nice day” lives rent free in my head 😂 Ive found myself calling it out really loudly as they’re walking out when I forget, another great video by the way
im so overly nice when im in a shop because i need validation
@@uncarley I’m overly nice always because I can’t have anyone have a bad opinion of me :) also do you ever think of writing your own book?
Omg I love your channel lol thank youu for mentioning the book hangover thing. I literally don't do "book hangovers" like ever even with my favorite books. I just move on right away and it's exactly what you said, I don't always start right away but I don't let a previous book stop me from reading another book. I will say about dnfing though, I have dnfed so much and am trying to stop because I have had the opposite experience as you, it makes me not be able to get through any books now so I've had to start marking books I've dnfed as read on goodreads even though I have never liked doing that personally. I just wouldn't get through my tbr if I didn't because I never finish anything
from now on this will always be my go to video when i feel down, to cheer me up about books and life!!
Carley I legitimately don’t know what I would without u! ⭐️🤍
carley has such tiny hands it's adorable
This is definitely me lmao. Watching videos about reading more instead of reading more. Guilty as charged.
I have ADHD too and reading is a struggle even though I love reading. I question myself a lot bc of it. Like " do I like the idea of reading or reading itself". Even though I know I LOVE reading. Does it even make sense
the way I need this video and I’m an english major. I keep starting books and not finishing them but they’re for class 😭
i cant help you there bestie
I have ADHD. I’ve read 70 plus books this year despite it being my final year in uni. I simply think to myself when i am aimlessly scrolling on twitter or whatever, that, hey, I’m literally reading right now and i’m enjoying it! And then transfer over to a book. It makes it seem more casual and if i’m just getting invested in AITA posts i will similarly get invested in a good book!
