      It was the last episode of the series that really meant something. Although, I always loved the episode where Veronica has to call AA after Archie fires her. However, once Billie came in - the show became One Day At A Time. I wanted to love the later episodes, but I just can’t.

      The second saddest moment in tv history was also on All in the Family. It was when Archie and Edith were quitly sitting in their chairs as you hear the taxi outside taking Mike and Gloria away when they moved to California. Heart wrenching emptiness. Norman Lear brilliantly ended that eoisode with heartbroken Archie and Edith in their chairs, slowly fading to black.

    • @retroguy9494
      @retroguy9494 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@Richard-vq7ud I agree. Its only the second time we see Archie cry (the first was when he got hooked on the uppers when his bar fails). And the way Edith handled it so as to not embarrass him, yelling to him from the kitchen that she is bringing him a beer so he can regain his composure is just SO empathetic. But that pales in comparison to Archie's scene when he comes to terms with Edith's death.

    • @Richard-vq7ud

      I saw an interview just recently, taped circa 2000, right before both Carroll O'Connor and Jean Stapl;eton passed on to that Great Borough of Brooklyn and Flatbush in the Sky. Jean was asked about her Edith voice; if she ever will say something a la Edith Bunker on request; or in fan conventions. She replied "No", very firmly and resolutely. Jean NEVER used her Edith voice again when she left the show....and no regrets about it. Basically she said, "I moved on...I already did that for several seasons...(sic)" Speaking of great memorable voices/speech dialect that are unforgetable, there was a famous voice actress who pass away in her nineties, right about the new millenium of the 21st century. I think her has name was Friedman; you can google and look it up. The fantastic gold nugget of trivia is this: In the 30's, she was not only the voice of Betty Boop in cartoons----she also was the voice of Olive Oyl in Popeye cartoons! And that's a fact, Jack! Jean Stapleton's nasal Brooklynese as Edith Bunker can never be duplicated~!

    The gifts of warmth & teaching that Jean Stapleton & Caroll O’Connor left the world in their hard work as actors should never ever be forgotten. I miss them both terribly because my young teen-hood was touched by the series.
    If I were to be an actor I would want to be a Doctor/Scientist character in an Alien series movie.

      A couple of years ago a 'Reboot' of the show was done with Woody Harrelson playing Archie Bunker.
      It was line for line the original script and it didn't age well, centering around the Vietnam War and the attached controversy.
      Harrelson seemed to be doing an impression of Carrol O'Connor as Archie Bunker.
      I don't remember who the other cast members were.
      I couldn't watch past the first commercial though I did pop back from time to time just to give it the benefit of the doubt.
      It was abysmal.
      On TH-cam there was an upload the original pilot of All in The Family.
      Different actors for Lionel Jefferson, Gloria Bunker, and Mike Stivic.
      Mike name was Steve and Steve was Irish not Polish but the story line was familiar; they were celebrating The Bunkers wedding anniversary.
      It may still be available, it was a part of a two part upload.

      I recently read an interview with Norman Lear. I said, that of all the characters he helped to create on his TV Shows, Edith, as played by the great late Jean Stapleton, was his most favorite character. @@KC______: I disagree with your "take" on Woody Harrelson's "reboot" of the Archie Bunker character. The "powers that be" must have thought that Woody could do that character because of his prowess in doing other characters in that show & others of that era in television history from the 20th Century. (As if the "reboots" could have come from any other century of the past! Television started in the 20th Century, but it goes blissfully into the future with other shows & characters.

      "All in the Family" was never without Edith. They moved to "Archie Bunker's Place" where she made her exit. In her interview when she talks about leaving to Norman Lear, she said he acted like it was a real person they were going to have die. She said she had to remind her Edith was a character not a real person. She was so sweet about it.

    • @GlennaVan
      @GlennaVan 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @Family Man That was such a great example of how people can justify any action to make it look good to others at least in their own minds. As with so many of Lear's subjects, it was presented in jest with so much truth behind it. The script was genius topped by the photo snap.
      Edith was always the stabilizing influence on everything with her love and acceptance while trying to make things better. That show was so deep in so many ways - it has always amazed me that so many didn't really "get it" as to the underlying story lines.
      Not my favorite, but when Edith's friend, the cross-dresser/impersonator, was murdered just because of who he was was definitely the most impactful for the time. Edith with all her love for people truly did not understand how such a thing could happen.

    Edith's story is the story of so many women. Her husband took her for granted and assumed she had no opinion of her own thinking she was a ditz; hiding in plain sight. Her children were almost ashamed of her. Her unquestioning support was an assumption and what little she had got co-opted without her permission. She lived in the days wives could not get credit on their own. She was a stalwart; the other load-bearing pillar. In the end, nobody recognized she needed help and she died of overwork standing in her own kitchen. Her labor went mostly unappreciated. She stood silent in her husband's shadow at times when she knew she was right. She loved her family and fought for them like a tigress. Her voice was small but powerful and she was queen in her household. American mom. American woman. American. Edith lives. Edith RIP.

    I hate to sound like my parents when I say that this show was on during a time when the family watched television together. How could we not? We only had one TV in the house and my father needed one of us kids to get up and change the channel for him. That aside, we all loved All In the Family. The show got its point across without beating the viewer over the head. It wasn't just good TV, it was great TV and it was great without profanity & nudity. Unlike sit-coms today, the character's dialogue was well written and thoughtful--not simply a series of slick one-liners and a laugh track. The show hit on several hot topics of the time. It woke people up to the changes that were happening in American as well as changes that needed to happen in America while still entertaining us.
