Wow, not sure how so many ppl know Jimmy Stokley, the long-haired guy who starts the singing. He was with the band since ‘63, along w JP Pennington, the other lead singer and lead guitarist. Jimmy had to stop with the group a year later (‘79) because hepatitis was making him too ill. Sadly, it took him in ‘84 at the young age of 41, this was Exile’s only pop hit, it was #1 for 4 weeks. The band went on to make all kinds of #1 country hits with JP singing most, they were from Kentucky and loved both forms of music. Some of their pop songs were picked up by Alabama, the country band, it got Exile to try their hand at country, and they were a huge success. 10 #1’s from ‘83 to ‘91.
That's rewriting history; Jimmy's voice was already ravished and gone by the time Mike Chapman tried to cut this record with the group. He had to come up with all sorts of studio-trickery to make it seem like the 'leadsinger' was involved, at all. The song got saved by J.P. Pennington and the multiple-layered-background-vocals (Chapman had previous used while working with Sweet). Jimmy Stokley got fired out of his own band, cause he couldn't sing properly anymore: a harsh truth. And then he got really sick on top of that. I just listened to some of their later and recent performances of this song; they're doing just fine without his poor vocals.
Ya, Jagger, Plant, Daltry, none of them could reach the intensity of this one hit wonder!!! Hook me up where you score whatever it is you're smoking huh? Lol

I'm 62 years old, i can't handle the music that is out there now. So much disrespecting with the words that f word in every sentence thats just unreal. I was born 71. I was too young in 78 to build a connection to such music back then. But i do remember listening to those hits back then over the radio. During the 80s and 90s i was rather a huge fan of RnB, Soul and Hip Hop. But today at the age of 51, just like every adult getting older i more and more connect to the times of my childhood and when my parents were still alive. And such music builds a connection. It was their music and their time. But i begin loving it. It really goes deep. It has classic. Such music is the frequency of my childhood.

I am not sure what kind of rip in time/space occurred that made Exile and Jimmy Stokley split. They weren't the same band without him; not knocking what they've done in country, but I think this band with Stokley could have powered through the 80s and 90s with that rock based narrative. Ah, well. I guess some of us were always teetering around in an alternate reality a bit too long. Rest well, Jimmy Stokley and thank you for posting this!

For those of you wondering: this is NOT a live band performance, but it IS a live VOCAL performance. By this I mean, the band tracks are from the album and the vocalists are singing live over top of them. Bands would often do this-make a mix from the master recording of just the music-and then sing live over it, on promotional appearances. So it’s a mixture of live and tracks. Make sense?
