    This format is fantastic, I think it could only be improved by being weekly, maybe 1h to 1.5h long, discussing all the weekends games, and perhaps having a human baby and/or a Scottish man in addition to these two chaps. I think it could work

    The total number of goals from the previous three Premiership meetings of these clubs was Brighton 7 : 1 Man U. After this fourth meeting the total is now Brighton 10 : 2 Man U. This recent result cannot have been a surprise and Brighton have clearly been the better team for some time. They are better organised, better drilled, enjoy themselves and play together as a team. This applies throughout their squad. United’s practice of buying skilful, big name expensive players with the expectation that they will come good as a skilled, professional unit is naive by comparison. It’s hit and miss at best. Look at Chelsea. They make the same mistakes.

You're totally correct about Brighton being better run and structured. Literally every United fan will agree with that and will agree that the way United is run is a disgrace, hence why every fan hates the Glazers (and Arnold and Murtough).

The only problem is the midfield switched off (or doesn't have the legs) to pick up runners. All of Brighton's goals were the same and could have been prevented had the midfielders done their defensive duties properly. Slot in Mount and Amrabat and hopefully the same errors won't keep occurring. Add the midfield deficiencies to the Chelsea-like lack of goals and you have a disaster waiting to happen with ETH reaping all of the blame. • @WolePhoenix
    @WolePhoenix ปีที่แล้ว +1

    It was easy to be carried away by the first 20 minutes where United were aggressive with their pressing BUT it was never going to be sustainable. United have always done well in the opening minutes in every game they've played then the level drops. In the Brighton game in particular, United were always going to be found out. We don't keep possession and are too direct with our play. Recycling possession and being patient in the buildup will always yield rewards but United are always in a hurry to get the ball forward. You risk many turnovers and considering the lack of athleticism in United's midfield options (Casemiro, Eriksen and McTominay), we were going to be punished at some point. Watching Casemiro and Eriksen in transition is akin to watching people run with a bag of cement tied to their backs. This has been the situation so far this season. The injury crisis hasn't helped either but it was naive of Erik to adopt a diamond where the midfield was going to be under a lot of pressure out of possession, especially one lacking energy, intensity and aggression. Casemiro lacks the legs and resorts to making tackles as opposed to getting into a duel. He accepted that he can win duels any longer. Eriksen has always been awful out of possession and McTominay? I'm sorry but he is not worth discussing because it's bizarre that he's still a Man Utd player. The situation could improve once Mainoo, Amrabat and Mount return as these players have the athleticism out of possession.
    In conclusion, it's been a frustrating start to the season and Erik shouldn't be shielded from any responsibility - playing players out of position doesn't put him in a good light - but there is still a lot to play for.
    Hopefully United can kickstart their season this weekend.

    Question, Why when teams go wider during build-up against United such as Spurs and Brighton why don't United just not press the goalkeeper and go more man for man in the press?
    I guess my real question is ETH is a good enough manager to notice this build-up change so why are we not offering something different to counter it? Do we not have the players? Are the players not getting enough quality coaching to deal with this scenario where we are weak?

    • @sachinjadhav4474

      @xBenjamin18 ปีที่แล้ว

      It’s his way or go bust it seems. Ajax fans did say he was very stubborn. It’s a dilemma as you either change your philosophy to suit the current players or stick to his way although the current players clearly aren’t good enough to do it.

    • @CoconutJewce
      @CoconutJewce ปีที่แล้ว +3

      He is clearly very stubborn, no doubt, but who was he supposed to put on? Other than Garnacho and Pellistri (who he never wants to play, for some reason), the bench is super thin at the moment. Everyone is injured. lol
      For example, our bench was Martial, Garnacho, Pellistri, AWB (now out for 2 months, I believe), Hannibal, Bayindir, Maguire, Evans, and Gore. Again, besides Garnacho and Pellistri, no one else comes on and improves the system we played or would improve a different system. ETH didn't really have a choice, unfortunately.

    For me, herein lies the crux of the issue for United...
    What would happen if United decided NOT to press Brighton, and instead form a middle-block in a standard 4-2-3-1 formation? Well, we saw the answer to that, when OGS was in charge. In home games at OT against sides who would happily settle for a point, United really struggled to control the games and create chances. Largely because there was no plan for enforcing turnovers and no plan for creating attacking overloads when in possession. It was all very safe, and this suited opponents under no pressure to actually win the game. This led to tight games, usually decided by a "moment" i.e. a penalty/set-piece or a piece of individual skill.
    In away games, or against "aspirational teams" i.e. teams who came to OT primarily to win, United actually did very well under OGS, in his first season in charge. There was the record-breaking unbeaten away run and a couple of notably comfortable victories against Manchester City.
    The problems began in his 2nd full season, when he attempted to implement his more "progressive/aggressive" style of football. The plan was to play higher, press higher and force turnovers...and it was implemented and executed very poorly. At the time, this was explained by many as being down to OGS limitations as a coach, which may or may not be the case (see how well McKenna has done since leaving...he did most of the coaching).
    What we really need, said United fans, is a top coach. So in comes ETH. First few games, same issue, so he then reverts to a more conservative style of football, albeit noticeably the team had clearer 'patterns of play' in attack and were able to create overloads and a good number of shooting opportunities.
    This season, United have gone back to Ten Hag Plan A, and again, it's gone horribly wrong. It seems that whenever a coach tries to implement a style which takes the team to the next level, the wheels come off.
    Personally, I think it's down to poor and confused recruitment and squad management over the last decade. Even now, after 18-months of ETH, the squad remains a real mixed bag, because he can't address all of the positions he'd like to address in each window (no manager can, bar Pep circa 2015).
    That means United are attempting to play this progressive style with obvious weaknesses. Rashford can't play in a pressing team, he's too lazy and entitled. Likewise Martial and Sancho, for broadly the same reasons. Casemiro still has class but his legs are going. Eriksen is a technical player, not a physical one. There are examples all over the pitch. When ETH gets his full squad back, I think we'll see improvements. Mount is an excellent presser. Antony works very hard and is a good presser (the media have labelled him otherwise, seemingly largely because he's Brazilian) and Fernandes and Hojlund are high energy. Amrabat is much more suited to this style than Eriksen. When Shaw is back and can alternate with Martinez in stepping beside Casemiro in CM, I think we'll see something start to come together....but again...there'll be bumps in the road and it will be slow progress.

  • @rosslogie217

    I'm sure United will try to sign Frenkie De Jong in the summer. He has 1 year left on his barca deal and they'll never offer him the same wages. He got insane wages at Barca because PSG also wanted to sign him and this was just after PSG has taken Neymar so they couldn't be seen to lose out again, ultimately he ended up on wages close to Messi hence why Barca have tried to offload him a few times already.
    With 1 year left he has to get sold in the summer and ETH loves him. In the meantime I'd prefer to see United move away from this man to man system as I don't think we have the players for it.

  • @Antonio-hb8rd
    @Antonio-hb8rd ปีที่แล้ว

    I think when you criticise Casemiro it's important to consider what's around him. Ericksen can barely move and McTominay hides so he's in midfield by himself. bruno runs has good running stats but they're skewed because most of that running is towards the ref.

    The real issue with ETH is his own stubbornness. He has a plan and he sticks with it no matter what. While this is admirable, in the Premier League that mindset will cost you a 7 0 against your rivals.

    Even though the manager doesn't have to players to play in the system that's not an excuse for the team not to have a formation or a style of play. United players are lost when the defenders has the ball, the midfield hides from the ball so they're forced to play the ball wide to Rashford and Antony and they are now predictable. Everyone walks around when the opposition has the ball, they dont tackle so the opposition can create chances after chances
