I just finished Voyager, it was so great. Mulgrew gave Janeway such character, she wasn't just tough as nails, she was also funny. I loved the doctor's journey towards hologram's rights activist. I've binge watched all of the star trek series in order because of the pandemic and by the time I got to Voyager I was getting upset at the way they treated the doctor. Like how many sentient holograms does starfleet need to be aware of before they recognize that they are an intelligent life form?!
I just loved seeing you two together again and listening to the noble conversation you had. Robert and Kate thank you very much for the encouraging and very pleasant conversation.
When my son was 3yo, I got him started on Voyager. I wanted him to see, and feel empathy for, people who didn't look like him. I also wanted him to be comfortable with women in positions of power. I got a 4yo who could use the word component in a sentence correctly. I've also gotten a grown-up human that sees all other humans as, simply, people. Thank you for a wonderful 7 yrs.
Thank you Mr. Picardo for so motivating interview with inspiring Kate Mulgrew. I have two daughters, 12 and 14 years old. They are wonderful violin players, but they are also embedded in all modern stuff that surround us every day. I work with computers, many different types, and they are familiar with these things as I have many of them doing different things and work to fight, and I enjoy Star Trek and similar types of shows ... of course ... We live in Costa Rica, and although we can see so many wonderful things happening around the world, here is not so easy to enter certain scientific areas; we just have not the resources for that. But we also have scientists and even astronauts that went against limitations and went beyond what was "supposed" to happen. So ... to fight, to overcome limits. To push first and to ask for forgiveness if needed. Have a very nice 2023 :-)
Great channel Robert! But please more of this! You and Kate should build up this channel together as some sort of "Voyager" reunion! Kate's comments about women in science is a great thing to hear as an engineer myself. The bluntness of her understanding is inspiring.
I also was introduced to Star Trek Voyager by my mother. I was always very grateful for all the messages the story, and the actors and actresses, imparted into my life. I hadn’t any interest in becoming a scientist of any kind, but I am a passionate artist, and the beauty of the series of Voyager has always and will always be deeply treasured. I know that one day human kind will materialize the beauty of the future that Star Trek portrays.

Thank you both so much for all you've done for Star Trek over the years. And for your numerous contributions to different causes too. I just got Star Trek: Voyager as a box set and I gotta say I really appreciate it more watching it straight through. You can see all the characters grow from beginning to end. I never had the chance to watch it when I was a teenager. But I'm happy about that because I appreciate it more as an adult. I hear all the time in videos and interviews about the positive impact that Voyager has had on people's lives, especially young women. And it's simply amazing! Star Trek is such a magnificent thing to be a part of! It's message of human exploration and striving to be better touches so many people, it's just amazing! I do agree with Mrs. Mulgrew about the inequality of pay between men and women. It's unfair. Women should get equal pay for equal work but they don't. My Mom raised me by herself and had to work 2 jobs as a waitress and a secretary back in the '90's to do it. So I totally agree that women should get equal pay to men. It's sad that there's so much inequality in our society still. The Planetary Society sounds awesome, Mr. Picardo! I hope you do some more videos spotlighting special events like PlanetFest again. I know many know you as The Doctor on Star Trek Voyager, but I think your best work was your character Richard Woolsey in the Stargate franchise. I love how your character went from a sniveling little toad, to becoming a much loved leader in Stargate Atlantis. I really loved you in the episode, The Return part 2, you and Richard Dean Anderson were great in that episode.

I grew up with Voyager. Started with TOS, watched some TNG...but Voyager was the first Series i actually watched consciously. The thing is, Kate Mulgrew or rather Katherine Janeway taught me A LOT about respecting woman. So much so, that it became so natural - i rarely think about differences between Women and Men. They are "just" Human beings to me and can achieve anything they want, regardless of Sex, Race or whatever. Star Trek also taught me, most of the differences are superficial or biological in such a way, that the only thing different is the way of achieving goals. I don't expect Women to exceed anything we Men do, the Goal i set for my Employees are the same and they get payed the same. The same consequences apply to anyone. We are one Human race and that's it. Sure, there are cultural differences, different traditions and so on, but they dont matter much. The contrast between Janeway and the new Star Trek is also VERY crass and glaring. And i think it has lost the "magic" to inspire...because even though Voyager was 70k Lightyears away from earth, i would have jumped in an instant to live in that setting or that kind of future. I don't even dare to think about that for the new Trek Series. There is absolutely nothing that makes me want to live or aspire to a future they have shown in both new series. Both of you influenced me in more ways than you could imagine. I'd say Voyager was the most influential thing that happend in my life apart from my parents. And i still love listening to all of you...be it here on TH-cam or for example on "The Delta Flyers" podcast. Thank you from the bottom of my heart to both of you.

Unfortunately Trek actors often have no clue that the inspirational aspect of their characters was baked into the guidelines Gene Roddenberry laid out in his TOS and TNG writers bibles, and thus they praise the NuTreks like "Discovery" or "Picard", even tho these shows go against these guidelines and thus do not create these inspirational characters anymore. When you search for "WHAT EXACTLY IS STAR TREK STORYTELLING" on YT you find an essay by RMB about this topic while quoting the TNG writers bible from Gene Roddenberry (google for "trek writers bible pdf", and you find both the TOS and TNG bibles for download). Four rules by Roddenberry explicitly stated in the TNG writers bible (which had been upheld by Rick Berman until the last episode of ENT in 2005): "Star Trek is not fantasy - each dilemma and solution has to be extrapolated from believable science or scientific theory. Believability is at the core of every Star Trek story.", "Starfleet officers are the best and brightest. They have been selected for the mission because they transcend their human failings. They represent the kind of people we aspire to be. ... If you are in doubt (as writer), apply this simple rule: Would I believe the behavior of a character if it would happen on the bridge of the battleship 'Missoury'?", "Star Trek is not melodrama, because melodrama does not require believable characters.", "Star Trek is an ensemble show with a strong band-of-brothers feel, not a star & co-star show." And here is where NuTrek fails in all aspects: It heavily uses fantasy elements, it shows broken characters as officers, its story telling is very melodramatic, and it is more a star & co-star show.
When I think of Voyager, I imagine how would the other captains have handled the situation. I think Janeway was the best captain to bring them home. If Voyager was destroyed and they had to travle on the Maquis ship with Chakotay in charge, they would not have made it home or even survived. I think Kirk would probably explore the Delta quadrant and maybe not mind turning their 5 year mission into a 70 year mission. Archer at warp 5, they never get home. Maybe they'll run into Amelia Earhart and stay with her. I don't remember where Sisko was with the Maquis at that point. If this was before Edgerton's betrayal, he might be more focused on getting home. If this was after, he might be blinded by rage and get the crew stranded in the Delta quadrant. I think Picard might get his crew home but maybe it takes longer.
i hope star trek legacy happens and they decide to bring back the doctor and see how far he would have evolved including some kind of aging subroutine being explained and the voyager crew reunion on the new enterprise but one can only hope
Joking aside, there are still seats available for SpaceX's mission around Mars and back on Starship in 2123/4 with the Japanese fashion billionaire, Yusaku Maezawa on a trip he's entitled; Dear Moon. Eight seats in total including Mr. Maezawa, who's funding the mission so either of you could apply and if successful, a few months of training & at no cost to yourselves. You're both speaking about how science fiction/acting can inspire STEM careers; what more could you both do to continue to inspire, than go on the trip of a lifetime? Mr. Maezawa was originally specifically looking for artists to accompany him, although recently has since broadened his range of applicant backgrounds. Check out the SpaceX website for details.
Race, gender these are characteristics. They do not define us. Personality, curiosity and the drive to bette understand the world we live in and ourselves is something that unites us all. Someday, with no meaning to belittle or to take away anything, but there wont be a gay pride march, or a black history month. No need to crack the glass ceiling.
Science is good, when the appliance has the goal of serving the majority of human kind in benevolent ways and in long times, but there's also - in my view - a great over appreciating praise of science today, especially technology and more precisely the appliance of digital products and their general know-how. We as a species has to reconquer the general knowledge of functioning without these things and getting rid of the attitude that we cannot exist without them. And, we're really in a hurry, in my view.

Joking aside, there are still seats available for SpaceX's mission around Mars and back on Starship in 2123/4 with the Japanese fashion billionaire, Yusaku Maezawa on a trip he's entitled; Dear Moon. Eight seats in total including Mr. Maezawa, who's funding the mission so either of you could apply and if successful, a few months of training & at no cost to yourselves. You're both speaking about how science fiction/acting can inspire STEM careers; what more could you both do to continue to inspire, than go on the trip of a lifetime?
Mr. Maezawa was originally specifically looking for artists to accompany him, although recently has since broadened his range of applicant backgrounds.

Science is good, when the appliance has the goal of serving the majority of human kind in benevolent ways and in long times, but there's also - in my view - a great over appreciating praise of science today, especially technology and more precisely the appliance of digital products and their general know-how. We as a species has to reconquer the general knowledge of functioning without these things and getting rid of the attitude that we cannot exist without them. And, we're really in a hurry, in my view.
Like Patrick Stewart, Kate Mulgrew is SUCH a better, more interesting person than her Trek character. Shame the same is not true of Marina Sirtis.
