- Headcrabs are regarded as Half-Life's most iconic creatures that inhabit Planet Earth after coming through from Xen after The Resonance Cascade. With The Combine striking fear into the popution of Earth and the nations within, the fate of coming in to contact with a headcrab can be severe. Although appearing small and harmless, they are anything but that.
Where did the headcrabs originate from, how many different variations of them are there and what happens if a headcrab manages to secure itself to the head of an unfortunate human? I went the Half-Life universe the explore the aftermath of the new alien population within the world in Half-Life.

Coming across them for the first time was terrifying. A lot bigger than they seem on the 2D screen.
But also a lot cuter
@@SiebenZwanzig Agree, they are terrifying as hell in VR (just imagine if they were moving around just as fast as in the "normal" Half-Life games, jesus) but there's something weird about them that makes them cute as well. Maybe the fact they look like ripe chicken.
@@SiebenZwanzig they really tried to give them a personality in half life alyx. In the vortigaunt's base, you can reach your hand toward the caged ones and they make scared noises and cower in the back of the cage. And also the easter egg with the mannequin was hilarious. You can catch them out of the air, throw them, and watch them hilariously ragdoll and try to get up.
Especially poison ones in the dark
Wow another killer episode. Just thinking about being conscious while the beak is drilling into your skull makes me cringe. Keep up the awesome work.

The beak drills into your skull, your chest has bursted open, your bones grown through your skin, and you slowly decompose as this monstrous creature pilots your motor functions and all you can do is cry for help
imagine the pain too, the skull is a very strong ( not the strongest but not the weakest) thing too.
Just imagine , crying deeply inside your body but none of the body move at your will , just a lust for a meat human meat
There couldnt be a better time for this kinda content! Feels like a renaissance for half life its so cool it was my brothers favorite franchise for awhile and a corner stone in where I learned about modding through him. The real beginning of my ambition, watching my brother work on hammer

I have a small theory that the headcrabs on earth don’t become gonad aliens since like you said they can quickly adapt to a new environment plus it’s not a first time a species of organisms evolves from the juvenile form of another creature. Perhaps the headcrabs on earth evolved to stay in there smaller forms which allowed them to diversify into new sub species like the fast and poison headcrabs for example. This is also enforced by the fact that not once do you encounter a gonad alien in half life 2 or it’s episodes. But I could be completely wrong about all this.
Thinking about it now, Ravenholm should've had a Gonarch fight, since the headcrabs there were probably left there for a while, and it just makes sense to have the main zombie/headcrab part of the game to have a gonarch fight.
ye it would be nice but maybe it's because they are like bee queens so you would need one gonarch already there to lay another one
but it takes a very very long time for headcrabs to mutate into the gonarch, and we also dont know how long headcrabs have been in xen.

Another thing, the while the human is still technically alive, you may hear the zombies speak, such as the common "god help me" line

Their bodies look nice and meaty, I'm guessing they have little fat so it would be lean.. maybe something in between crab and poultry... who knows.

You forgot the electric headcrab and also i think that the other headcrabs were once normal ones altered by the combine
I'm a little disappointed the Gonome zombies from Opposing Force aren't officially cannon because they gave a much more interesting and horrifying element to headcrabs and what they can do to people if left on them for long periods of time.
I think you probably should give an in depth look at them, even if they aren't 100% cannon.
I take opposing force canon. Reason why ravenholm isn't infested with Gonomes is because the combine modified Headcra*p*s to not enter the Gonome stage

I only played a little of Half Life 2 on Xbox 360. Maybe one day I'll finish it.
Minor correction: fast and poison headcrabs are genetically modified bioweapons
I keep seeing people saying they're modified bioweapons, but I don't really see much evidence to support it. I mean, it's entirely possible these subspecies existed during the Black Mesa incident, and none of the protagonists ever saw one.

@@magicdogstudios6624 They don't say "bioweapons", they say "biotics". And I don't think they have specific lines for different kinds of headcrabs. If they do, I've never seen it happen in game. I can go into GMod and confirm it real quick, though.

It's interesting that they aren't compatible wit' Xen aliens, but very much wit' humans. As if they were willfully designed against humans.
Other than that, it's clear they're heavily inspired by the face-huggers from _Alien._
BTW, when will y'do a lore 'bout the Gargantua or the Alien Grunts? Perhaps the Alien Aircrafts?

It actually seems Lamarr is friendly. She doesn't keep trying to get on people's head. She never tries to jump on Gordon's, Kliner's, Eli's, and Magnusseon's head.
Still would put down every headcrab I see. They need to be wiped out entirely and killed to the brink of extinction

Really disappointed that they didnt go crazy with Half Life alyx to prevent too much fear, because you can find the model for the fast headcrab in Half life alyx. It looks extremely cool, but I guess they cut them because they were too scary in vr to have something quicker than the normal headcrabs.

You forgot to mention the gonome from opposing force. I.e the final form of a standard zombie
Maybe even the Gonome isn't the final form...who knows? The third form of human mutants would probably look even more terrifying.
As much as I enjoy the video, I fear that you missed one other species of headcrabs (i think.)
There's this uh, electric type headcrab in Half life Alyx that produces electricity, while the name I think doesn't have the word (crab) in it, it is still a headcrab.

The fact that an animal from another dimension is perfectly adapted to human hosts needs a lot of splaining.
I was wondering about this. Like, what were headcrabs evolved to do naturally on Xen, or were they engineered by the Nihilanth? Do they need a host to become a Gonarch? But most importantly, why don't we see any Vortigaunt zombies?
@@BoxStudioExecutive i have a possible answer it’s still most likely the vortigaunts but I think that they have moved on to preying onto other species of human like creatures before entering earth and after (seeing how they were able to prey on vortigaunts or might have) they found it easy to latch onto the human

@@thatwolfensteinguy8954 I reckon because of their poor eyesight (if they have any at all) the head crab thought it was a human or something of similar proportions. I’m decently sure it has no way of seeing apart from maybe an early form of echolocation so it would have no way of telling a maniquin from a human until it latched on (they aren’t very intelligent they are essentially just a parasite)

I did think that too. But as they don't go onto the victims head, and from some sources I looked at, it said they were not. I would have loved to have put them into this episode as they were my favourite in Alyx!

So yeah that's an official confirmation that it is indeed a headcrab! Don't know why so many people think it's a whole new alien species...
@buggy boy Actually the creature you are referring to is called a Lightning Dog and it is not related to the head crab species. They take over the body much differently and has a different affect. "Lightning Dogs can crawl into the chest cavity of a Headcrab Zombie, whose Headcrab either left, or was killed. Once inside the corpse, they turn it into an electric zombie."

@buggy boy There seems to be some conflicting information out there currently. In the retail game they call it a Lighting Dog, when you Google lighting dog for Half Life Alyx they mention it is a subspecies which means its like a cousin. Valve needs to mention what exactly the hell a lighting dog is an were it comes from because we can clearly see its not a headcrab. They worded it to let you know they are much different. you can clearly see they affect dead bodies much differently. We can agree that they are a form of a "Body Crab" and not head crabs".

The biological lore is unrealistic, but it is a video game primarily aimed and kids and teens, so I doubt the video game developers care about too much realism.
The victim is shown to have their entire torso ripped open, and even their intestines are fallen out and half missing as a result, just the blood loss alone from this would result in the body not being able to function anymore.
What about the revivers from hl:A? Im pretty sure they are a subspecies too

so the headcrabs evolved to control creatures through their brains because of controllers, vortigaunts and grunts having humanoid heads... we never even see or hear about vortigaunt zombies

Hey! Thanks for watching. When doing this episode, I checked with the wiki to see if they were a part of the headcrab species but they seemed to be of relation, but not actually a headcrab. Hence why they're called lighting dog and not headcrab. I did really want to put them in the video though! They were my favourite in Alyx! A pretty challenging enemy.

@@Skyrionn along with the houndeyes and bullsquids! It's a shame so many enemies with such interesting mechanics are unused. If half-life 2.5 (as they're will never be a 3) is made, the lightning dogs, bullsquids, and houndeyes better be included or I will riot
