For me HL2’s most memorable level has to be THAT gunship encounter on The Bridge when you’re facing one of these killers with far fewer options for cover and movement. My first few attempts ended in either being peppered or falling off an edge while trying to avoid being peppered, or both, and in those deaths I gained a whole new respect for these bizarre adversaries.
It's heavily implied, not only because of their anatomy but because of their animations as well. They literally "swim" through the air and it's likely that they still think they're in the water, unaware that they're being used as an aerial combat unit for an intergalactic alien army.
I'm glad you mentioned the morality of it. If there was a half life movie I'd hope they'd have certain resistance members sympathetic to the creature to reflect this. "You're free now."
The canon reminds me of a mosquito’s proboscis. With its compound eyes and the fact that the Combine are an intergalactic, multiverse, dimensional-shifting, and reality bending empire, I wouldn’t be surprised if the Combine stumbled upon an alternative dimension or timeline in which they found giant mosquitos and thought to themselves, “Yeah, we could modify these. Just replace the wings and their abdomens with a giant fan and replace their proboscis with a giant gun!”

Its coloration higly implies it used to be aquatic since a light underside and dark top half is a really efficent way for sea creatures to camolfauge themselves.
I think the propeller might actually be made of organic material because after i shot one down and i investigated the wreckage, i noticed the blades looked more like individual dragon fly wings with their shape and how translucent they where.

The gunship actually looks like its just the head of the creature. And the rest of the body has been disposed off. And its neck has been replaced with helicopter blades.
@v8matey yeah I get the sense that synths are like 10% original creature and 90% combine, or even just original creations based on a creature (hunters seem like this to me). The original might have looked different, we really don't know. The way they have the same chitinous armour either indicates they are from the same planet or the combine has modified them all in the same way, so the body color might even be wrong.

What I believe is that the gunships were creatures living in gas planets that had a special environment where gas was liquified in a sense so that the creatures could fly. Now they are excellent at flying because they used to fly in their world, with the extreme modifications the combine makes on their bodies I think they tried to make them fly just like in their world but in earth, by attaching various modifications such as the turbines and its back which reminds a lot a helicopter.

Being a fan of dolphins and beluga whales, this was always one of my favorite NPCs in the HL universe. I always wanted to pet them and see what they feel like
Another thing is that they're most likely not the main aerial unit, and only are deployed on Earth because they are able to easily fly through the atmosphere. The combine most likely has multiple types of aerial ships for different environments, so when they saw us use helicopters with rotor blades, they most likely brought out the gunships because of the simular flight mechanics.

Since the Dropships and Gunships do possess a level of intelligence, it wouldn't be too far off to say that they had the capabilities to initiate attacks and strikes without the need of a superior. Which is why I love the Combine. Unlike something like Star Wars, they have ships that possess levels of intelligence that can help them in their battles. Not to say the Separatists' droids couldn't do that too. It's just that an organic's intelligence seems more suited to these types of tasks.
If you think about it the combine's choice of species for their gun ship really strange be it that they chose an aquatic animal for what is essentially an Apache helicopter lol
@Sagey08YT I said this elsewhere, but they are so heavily modified I don't think this would make sense. The combine has to program them to know how to shoot, turn rotors on/off, etc, so this wouldn't really be possible. The hard thing about that is that there is no confirmed facts about who he is, where he comes from, who he works for. I think it would be lot of conjecture.
