Thanks for the suggestions on improving the audio so I don't have to use a box! I've played with your suggestions and can absolutely hear the improvement. Thank you my guys! While you're here, share the video with your fellow resistance members! 😂 😂
What they releaze after all these years is half life: alyx. Man alyx is not a big or important game at all. They should've made half life 3 and after half life 3 they should've made a game we play in ravenholm including father grigori and half life: alyx. Source 2 would look a lot better on PC and more weapons and enemy types could be added. And even the voice acting and the looking of characters are so fucking bad in half life: alyx. Its only Jeff i like in the game. But other than that it doesnt look very good. Half life 2's artstyle was so special but half life alyx looks like just a game with good graphics.
I feel like this character gets forgotten about a lot when it comes to half life 2... Obviously hes super important and very noticeable as you play through the game and meet him in ravenholm.... But there was just something about him that that I can't seem to remember every time I go back and discuss the game series with someone else familiar with the Lore and the universe. Even though hes one of the most interesting characters in the entire game... So thank you for making a video about him.... As always my guy keep up the good work love your content as Usual lol By the way I just read your post about starting up starting up Siri's is Siri's on dragon age that sounds really interesting as well very much looking forward to that As I'm only tangentially aware of of that universe.... So you could lie in every video and I really wouldn't be able to correct to correct you but knowing how in depth you've gone into fable I know without even checking your sources that you're most definitely correct .... Which is greatly appreciated :) I left you with thumbs up in this nice little comment As always it's the least I can do to repay you for the quality Video essay :)
One small detail I love in ravenholm is that you can find body’s with guns nearby behind any room that’s barricaded implying that the person committed suicide, making the ambience more unnerving.
Never thought about these rooms... But yeah it would made sense for all the rooms left barricaded with ammunition behind it and blood all over them. Ive noticed them not just in Ravenholm, but almost every area you pass through that has big numbers of zombies roaming around. Its something people tend to forget when playing HL games, everything is made for a reason and each little place has its own story.
Valve is the king of enviromental storytelling along with Fallout games. No matter how much people criticize them. Let it be L4D, Half Life or Portal. Its always worth to look around in these games. Always worth to pay attention cause part of the story is right there, infront of you. And only unfolds if you care to take a peek.
8:25 I love that room because it's clear that someone (probably father grigori) was trying to heal the zombies but realized that they couldn't, if that was father grigori then that's probably where he finally broke and realized that the best he could do was kill everyone.
no wonder he just broke down, knowing that the goo from the health kits can't save his buddies as he removed the headcrabs which nested upon their heads, all he knew was the only thing he could do is end their suffering right with their lifes.
The saddest part about Grigori "freeing his friends" is that it's actually true. When a human becomes zombified by a headcrab, they are still alive, and feel everything that happens to them. They are nothing but a shell with no control over their actions. Another sad detail about this is that if you light a zombie on fire, it'll let out a painful scream, that when played backwards, is the sound of a human screaming for help. So, as sad as it is, death is the only way to help these people, and Grigori is just mercy killing them.
don't the headcrabs ensure the person remain alive since you can hear them moaning in pain? This means Grigori's beliefs is true that he is freeing his friends and allow them to move on to a better place
Years ago someone on the Valve forums strung all the maps from Half-life 2 and the episodes together and estimated that the Victory Mine (from the start of Hl: Ep 2) is a lot close to the City 17 Citadel site than Ravenholm is. Since, apart from a moderate shock wave which derailed Gordon and Alyx's train and occasional flashes from secondary portal storms, the Victory Mine is mostly intact following the Citedal explosion. This suggests a very strong possibility that Ravenholm was unaffected by the Citedal explosion and thus Father Grigori lives! Father Grigori is one of my favorite Half life gaming characters. I always hate leaving him behind in Ravenhom and I long for his company and assistance when traveling along the desolate coast from Ravenholm to Nova Prospekt.
One thing we need to take into account is that most games don't represent their worlds on a 1:1 scale, either due to technical limitations or because the travel distances between "fun" areas would be too long and boring. For example, in Elder Scrolls lore, the Imperial City - the capital of a large empire - is supposed to be the size of Rome with millions of inhabitants. While in game, it's the size of a small village with no more than 50 NPC's in total.
@@simonaspalovis1204 the fact you told here only can support a half life game including father grigori. Because ravenholm could be a lot far away from the citadel according to your comment or could be a lot closer. So there is still no reason to not include grigori in a half life game.
@@zombine7103 Either scenario is likely. What I'm simply trying to say is that "stitching" game levels to determine the exact distance a protagonist has travelled is not an accurate way of measurement from a lore perspective.
@@simonaspalovis1204 also if we look from the lore perspective, he gets into a grave and just disappers that should definitely mean something. The developers did want the players to think that he is still alive, i dont think they made this to make us think that he died with citadel explosion.
I think whether he made it out or not, it's still a satisfying conclusion for him. After living a life of raising an entire town, then having to murder everyone you ever knew and loved, what else would be left for him alone in or outside of the town? In many ways, Father Gregori became a husk of his former self just like the zombies, living only to struggle against them. If the town was destroyed in the explosion, in his final moments, he could take solace in the fact that his job would be fulfilled.
He is putting the HUMANS out of their misery by killing them, when a person is turned into a headcrab zombie they are alive trough the entire process, and after it, and they feel all of the pain
Headcrab zombies are either: 1. Fully sentient and know what is happening to them, which is why they scream for help 2. The Headcrab controls the brain, thus meaning that it can probably play the victim's last words like a pre-recorded message
@@civilprotectionunit8145 yeah, but it can also be that the headcrab probably has the ability to control what a victim says, im not exactly sure though If it can move the victim and use it to get even more victims, then it can probably use the victim's vocal cords
@@OsnoloVrach The ZoMbInE is able to talk throu their radio and call reinforcements to their location to destroy the headcrab/s that live there or near the location.

Hey this is my village WTF! Imo father Grigori might be an homage of the game director (who is bulgarian born) to the importance of bulgarian orthodox priests and clerics to preserving our culture and faith during the dark ottoman ages(14th-19th century) They would help resistance fighters by hiding them and giving them food and shelter. Sometimes even fighting along side them. Here he is fighting zombies instead of turks and being a bro.
Personally, Father Grigori is so inspiring and, again personally, he is smarter than the entire resistance. The reason why I think that is because he had just human technology, like cars, propane tanks, sparkers, you get the gist, to fight all the zombies while the Resistance had not just human technology they had Cobine technology as well. I admire him in so many ways, like his intelligence for example. anyway, all of that aside, you did a great and wonderful job on doing a lore video on my favorite Half-Life character. Thank you for making these!
Weird comparison. Grigory was fighthing zombies who had almost zero intelligence while the Rebels were fighting against an highly technological and intergalactic aliens. The Combine didn't care about Ravenholm and if they did Grigori would have been long dead. No hate against Grigori though he's crafty and intelligent but he wasn't facing the same challenges as the Resistance.
Honestly the wave off he gives you when you finally leave Ravenholm is sad when you know the voice actor is Jim French, the same voice actor for Bill, who passed away fairly recently. May he Rest in Peace.
@@blockwearingman He’s just put there probably because he’s gone mad or isolated to the rest of humanity. But it might be believable as vortigaunt is part of human/resistance instead of aliens.
I think it's definitley possible Grigori survived. Remember, near the end of the game when Gordon and Alyx use the teleporter to get back to City 17, Kleiner tells them that it had been a week since he'd talked with them, which occurred right before they teleported. If he did survive the zombies, he'd have had plenty of time to get away from the Citadel's explosion range if he kept on the move.
So long story in short lemme tell you something: there is no reason to not include father grigori in a half life game right now and yes he is still alive. He goes into a grave and disappears. Why did the developers do this? To think us that he died with citadel explosion? No! To make us think that he is still alive and for us to think he will come back.
It's never been confirmed whether or not Grigori was the town's priest prior to the shelling, or if he self-anointed after his descent to madness, because he's wearing Converse shoes, which aren't exactly priestly habit - although they could have also been a "practical" choice given that they're also covered in headcrab blood.
God, having a game with Adrian and Grigori would’ve been perfect for me. My favorite HL protagonist and NPC fighting alongside each other. Makes me sad that the game got cancelled.
There was one Father Grigori quote that got me thinking: "You are to be commended for avoiding my traps. The work of a man who once had too much time on his hands, and now finds time for nothing but the work of salvation." This leads me to believe that Grigori began not as a religious person of any sort, but just as a survivor. A random person who hadn't managed to get killed yet. The town was destroyed and he built all the traps, allowing him to survive for many years, but the trauma he endured started taking its toll on him. At one of his lowest points, he went to the church to seek guidance, and turned to faith to give him hope. Being the only believer in the town, he ordained himself Father Grigori and continued his zombie-killing quest, this time in service of the Lord.
I just realised - In 8:30, where the zombies were laid on a table with a med-kit right next to them; did Grigori tried to save the hosts after separating the crab?...
Nah, I don't think Father Grigori got killed that easily. With how skilled he had become from years in Ravenholm, I bet he would have set up some kind of secret tunnel underneath the Catacombs of the Ravenholm Church. My theory: He managed to kill off the residents of the town, thanks to Gordon's assistance with cutting a lot of them down, and then decided to head out of Ravenholm on what he would see as a personal crusade against the Combine. He now continues to kick ass for the lord. It could be possible that Gman had something planned for Father Grigori and Adrian Sheppard after the destruction of City 17. Therefore, he would have transported Shepard to Grigori as a way of pointing them in the direction of the Borealis; this would make sense, as Shepard is one of the few people that was strong enough to even face off against Gordon Freeman (not to mention the professional obligation Shepard has with hunting Freeman down.) I really don't know; not even sure this could be possible for Canon. Still, an interesting idea for a story.
father Grigori is literally insane but he has to be one of my favorite characters in half-life. he put himself out of his way to help Gordon which he obviously could tell he was important. because he has that "weird orange suit" because I have no idea what that hazardous environment suit is called
I can imagine Gregori being woke in the night by the sounds of the fast zombies screaming at Gordon, the sound of the shotgun blasting through the town. Maybe he had heard those sounds before but they was quickly extinguished when another visitor or survivor fought their last fight. Surely, Gregori knew how important freeman was by his will to survive, fight and offcause seeing his HEV suit. Knowing how he had been helpless to save his towns people, he would jump at the chance to help someone who wasn't beyond saving.
@@BrandonTheKralik Food and water would also be something he needs for sure.... My guesses he became vegeterian for the fact there weren't any cattle around as it seems and could only grow plants around him using the rain. As for water, he probably made simple machines to gather clean water from the rain and being able to stock water in water containers. Thats my theory on how he survived considering he was the only human left around to roam the streets... Also partially raiding houses in Ravenholm for supplies and ammunition but ofc he had to be super careful doing so.
When you emerge from the train wreck in EP2, you can look at the blasted out citadel and the remains of what was City 17, looking closer you may spot quite a bit of the city "mostly intact" from the explosion - houses, offices and high-rise buildings can be seen around the ruins with a keen eye. If Ravenholm is 40km from City 17, it only suffered minimal damage from the blast.
So long story in short lemme tell you something: there is no reason to not include father grigori in a half life game right now and yes he is still alive. He goes into a grave and disappears. Why did the developers do this? To think us that he died with citadel explosion? No! To make us think that he is still alive and for us to think he will come back.
I was the same age with my first play thru of HL2 as I was in 8th grade when it was released on pc. My dad got it for me and I was able to play on our family pc. I’d sneak downstairs on school nights to play and before I knew it found myself in Ravenholm. With as horrifying as it was Father Gregori was a bastion of hope and comfort and I just was doing my what is almost an annual play thru of hl2, I still felt the same. Ravenholm isn’t as scary now that I’m 30 and have done many play thrus but Father Gregori continues to be my favorite part of the game
I can now just breeze through the whole chapter using only the gravity gun. It's the best part of the game in my opinion. Nice that we had the same experience!
i watched my 1 year younger sister play it and were both absolutely horrified by it. I watched it and tried my best to translate the thing for her, since English was my thing. I still have fond memories of ravenholm because of her.
Back in the beta, Ravenholm (And well, the entire game) was really dark, I don't know all the details but I do know about being able to find a dead childs body under a bed in the beta.
they were was plans to add children on the game but since the people wont like it and dont want it to be Rated A for Adult it would be like manhunt all over again
I think he survived the city explosion, he was going into that tomb which was a underground fall out bunker he built himself, assuming it tunnels down to an elevator which goes even further down to a larger underground bunker, he may have more tunnels which escape Ravenholm and city 17, perhaps he is even in White Forrest in his own new safe haven. Father Grigori is a type of character who you cannot under estimate, he is good at surviving. I don't think he met his fate at the hands of the head crab toxin.
Nice Video, I love your videos on Half-Life 2!. i was actually watching a twitch stream of hl2 not too long(like 2 weeks) ago, and it is actually fascinating to imagine what Ravenholm would have been like before the combine shelled/bombardied it .o.
Sad thing is father grigori failed to protect his flock of sheep (citizens of ravenholm) and now he's gone insane being isolated and alone, worse thing is he can't leave because he wishes to put all the infected citizens in ravenholm out of their misery.
my favorite experience in Ravenholm is when i was going pacifist in ravenholm to see how few zeds i could kill, and Grigori just channeling his inner doom guy during the graveyard section
At this point im pretty sure if he is alive, he probably finished cleajing the town from headcrabs. They need humans to breed. They will run out thoses. Also, he is indeed bringing salvation to thoses poor souls. Remember, the victims of headcrabs are still alive, and some of them have some consciousness still, as evidenced by the fact some of them are sometimes hears begging to be killed or ended as they are in severe pain.
I don't get why everyone seems to think his weapon is a lever action rifle. He never cycles it an it only holds two shots plus it has two barrels so to me it's clearly meant to be an over/under double barrelled shotgun.
@@49mozzer well by your logic the lack of holes and the lack of any kind of animation for him loading it suggests that it's a stick decorated to look like a gun
although it's probably not canon, i like to imagine father grigori as a war veteran, idk what war, but just some war he was in that allowed him to utilize that knowledge for killing zombies
I think it’s possible he could have hunted animals for food during his use. Given his arsenal seems more akin to what would be allowed to a civilian than a soldier.
My personal theory is that Grigori either escapes within the tomb he seals himself in and re-enters Ravenholm to continue his fight, or he waits out the flames to exit through the graveyard to, again, continue his mercy killing. After days - or weeks after Gordon’s arrival, he manages to end the parasites that took his friends from him, with the blast from the destruction of City-17 not only killing a large chunk of the remaining zombies, but giving Grigori hope, with the shining portal of the Citadel being an act of God to him. After confirming his kills and ensuring the town is truly empty, he clears out the mines and escapes out into the outlands, either meeting with remnants of a Resistance base or setting out on his own, attempting to find his way and living off the land. If the latter is true, I highly doubt Grigori lives, or at the very least doubt he’ll be a member of the Resistance again, unless the railroad near the mines leads to White Forest. He’ll probably be a nomad, occasionally helping those in need but wandering on his own in the outskirts.
Well I mean considering the Easter egg where if you reverse the sounds the zombies make you can hear there screams of pain and for Gordon to help them. Gregory is technically helping them sense they were still alive.
I loved Father Grigori, he made Ravenholm not quite as miserable! But when I first ran into him I thought I was gonna have to fight him as a boss later because he seemed so unhinged. I was kinda thinking "okay, well you're helping me FOR NOW but you're also clearly totally insane... So, what's the catch?" But he subverted my expectations and died(?) a hero. RIP?
Most of the time the bad reverberation in a room is because of standing waves, the best way I find to deal with this is to get some sound treatment foam and put it in on line with the place you will record on any of the walls that face eachother. You only have to do one side as this is usually enough to interrupt the effect.
In regards to the reverberations you’re having in your office, the only thing you can do install a makeshift soundproofing on your walls. One of the easiest things to do is to go out and buy the egg crates you put on your bed play some on your walls but they will need to stay there. If you have a closet in your office it would be better to do it in there that way you can close though door and it will not be seen. But once you do that, foam or audio absorbent materials such as the a crates you put on your bed you will find complete dead audio with no reparations whatsoever. Great job on your videos! Keep up the good work!!!
it is very sad to see the voice actor for Father Grigori (Jim French) dies i dont play half life 2 only gmod and when i spawn father grigori i always hated him because of his laughs and stuff not knowing the hell he have gone through i own him an apology and i really starting to hate valve more for stuff like this they made half life 1 and 2 one if not the best games ever with storys and now just waiting for the voice actors to die and everyone to have less hope of half-life 3 coming out i pray to god that there is a world where everyone is happy and got what they wanted. "Farewell brother! I fear I deliver you to a darker place. May the Light of Lights illuminate your path. Look to your own... heh... salvation ehe ahahAHAHAHAHAHAHA!"

Well, if you use noclip after Father Gregori blows up the gas/fuel tanks, you can see that he enters in that little chapel and after a while he unspawns. It could be a sign that he managed to escape, although there is no hatch or back door there.
Dude, loved this loveletter to grigori's struggle. I wanna help you with the audio of the videos, am an audio engineer after all. Your mic sounds fine but the way you're using it (proximity effect and sibilances) and some post processing tools can improve the general sound of your voice quite a lot. Anyway, it's not that bad at all, i've seen so much worse sounding videos without it being acknowledged. At your service; Nachi Dayz.
Thank you :) I've been doing what I can to improve and it seems to have worked. Always looking to improve though. This was a love letter to Grigori and I'm glad you could see that :)
many gaming channels have soundproofing panels attached to the walls to fix the echo issue. another solution is carpet and fabric furniture to absorb the sound waves
Hey Just discovered your videos but im already in love with them. Keep making them you're doing a fantastic job. And as soon as i finish your Half Life playlist im moving straight onto dragonage!
Thank you for doing this video. I played this as a very young kid, and it terrified me. Especially playing at night, alone. Fun stuff. I still remember this part to this day.
Great video, surprised it hasn't gotten much attention. As for the room, you could try seeing if egg cardboard helps. Seriously, I was to a radio recording room and was specifically told that due to its shape and properties egg cardboard can be budget sound foam.
Thanks for the tips! I feel like all of the suggestions have helped for a video I just recorded for a Fable lore. I did compare it to this one and it sounds so much clearer!
Thanks for the back story info. You may have been scared by Ravenholm aged 12 but it also freaked me out aged 36... Father Grigori was a welcome companion for me!
I think you might want to look at some of LazyPurple's making-of videos, if I recall correctly he just recorded himself while he was under a blanket in order to get good sound quality. Good luck, man, and keep making great content!
This man stood alone against the very people he knew and cared for, trapped and in never-ending pain. He stayed behind to insure his flock could move on from this hell on earth he's a hero mad or not. Love the video!
Let's take a moment to realize how traumatic Grigori's life has been. He was born in the 1980s (assuming he was middle aged during the Black Mesa Incident), meaning he watched the Soviet Union collapse. He watched the collapse of society post-Black Mesa and subjugation of humanity by the Combine. Then he watched everyone he called a friend be turned into zombies in Ravenholm. This poor guy has had his world collapse around him *_THREE_* times.
You might want to consider a redo for grigori and ravenholm as noclip has a video on a game named “ravenholm” which Valve cancelled. Lots juicy lore in there. For one, Grigori is immune to HC bite :)
Right outside the antlion tunnels in Half-Life 2: Episode 2, there are zombies and headcrabs seen with hooks through them, like they've been gutted & hunted. A few friends of mine believe this to be the work of our favorite monk. It's definitely possible, I suppose. Interesting to think about though
Father Grigory is one of my favorite character, when Ravenholm attacked by the combine, rather than leave it and evacuate to city 17 he stay back and protect his home in the cost of his sanity, I mean, what will you choose ? Losing your mind, or losing your belief and memory of your love one ?,he using basic human technology to survive after all the years, he fail time after time to protect his friend, unable to lead them to salvation, safety... But in the end he lead Gordon to salvation, he has done it, maybe he's alive reflecting on his failure, unable to protect his friend..., lost his home and his sanity... But Gordon not only save his belief, his soul, his mind become whole once again, that's enough to motivate him to save another life... his death is not a tragedy, but a triumph
You make these videos with Adobe Premiere? If so there is a DeNoiser effect that limits the echo, also just put some furniture or the egg things around the room as they will reduce the echo, but your voice is perfectly fine for me. Great vid man!
What little remain form the people who turned into zombies is crying to be saved so it's actually reasonable for him to think he saves them aside from going crazy Sure you can't understand their words if you don't reverse their speech but their cry of pure suffering is pretty obvious be it if you damage them or not
I can hear on your audio in newer videos after this one that you figured out better audio but to anyone anyone who just stumbled here, boxes from eggs can be used as echo reducers and acoustic treatment for a room. I saved the boxes after having bought eggs and so did my aunt and uncle for me, and I use the egg boxes instead of acoustic foam for my walls. It looks butt ugly but it is a LOT cheaper and works good enough.
Found this level spooky when I was a teenager too! FG was a fantastic character, as was this part in the game. I had no idea about the back story! Well done 👍 found on the half-life Reddit a link to the documentary, and then this video - half life lore is fascinating please do more mate! Cheers
LOVE YOUR WORK AND LORE STORIES, NOT TYPING LIKE THIS TO YELL. I'M LEGALLY BLIND, SO THIS HELPS ME SEE THE LETTERS BETTER. THIS IS JUST MY PREFERRED METHOD OF TYPING, YES, I KNOW, THERE ARE OTHER WAYS OF FIXING THE TEXT, BUT THIS IS MINE. ANYWAYS, FATHER GRIGORI'S SO UNDERRATED...AND HE'S ONE OF MY FAVORITE CHARACTERS., [VOICED BY AN AWESOME VA, WHO GAVE LIFE TO SO MANY OTHER CHARACTERS IN THE VALVE WORLD. R.I.P JIM FRENCH]. I LOVED HAVING HIM AS MY SIDEKICK AND RAVENHOLM IS INDEED CREEPY...I KIND OF WISH HE HAD MORE "SCREENTIME" SO TO SAY. ALSO, TO ANSWER YOUR QUESTION ABOUT HIS FATE, I LIKE TO THINK HE'S STILL ALIVE. [ALSO. VALVE HAS A WAY OF PORTRAYING "INSANE" CHARACTERS WITH TRAGIC STORIES DON'T THEY]? AND YES, I PERSONALLY THINK HE WAS GOING THROUGH SOME KIND OF PSYCHOTIC STATE/MENTAL BREAKDOWN OR WHICHEVER IT'S CALLED [IDK IF IS. EITHER THAT OR HE JUST HAS A DARK SENSE OF HUMOR AS THE WIKI ALSO SUGGESTED ALONGSIDE SAID MENTAL ILLNESS POSSIBILITY. BUT I THINK IT'S REALLY A MENTAL BREAKDOWN. AND NOW THAT I THINK ABOUT IT, TBH...I'M SURPRISED MORE HALF-LIFE CHARACTERS AREN'T LIKE THAT [OR IN A SIMILAR STATE]. DUE TO THE CHAOS OF THE WORLD. GRANTED PEOPLE EXPERIENCE TRAUMA DIFFERENTLY, IN ALL SHAPES AND FORMS, BUT STILL...YOU'D THNK THERE'D BE MORE MENTALLY UNSTABLE INDIVIDUALS OUT THERE. ALSO, JUST OFF THE TOP OF MY HEAD. IN A WAY GRIGORI'S EXPERIENCE REMINDS ME OF DOUG RATTMANN'S, IN THE SENSE THAT...HIS FATE REMAINS UNKNOWN, HE STRUGGLED TO SURVIVE, WENT INSANE. [UNLIKE GRIGORI HOWEVER, HIS INSANITY WAS NOT SUDDENLY BROUGHT ON BY TRAUMA, BUT RATHER IT WAS A LACK OF ANTIPSYCHOTIC MEDS], YET THEY WERE BOTH ISOLATED AND ALONE, AND YET HE STILL TRIED TO SAVE SOMEONE HE CARED ABOUT. [SPEAKING OF DOUG, DO YOU THINK HE'S STILL ALIVE]? THE ONLY HUMAN IN RAVENHOLM AND APERTURE ALIKE...SO, AS I SAID, THEY HAVE SIMIAL EXPERIENCES AND I LOVE THEIR CHARACTER ARCS SO TO SAY. THEY'RE BOTH CRIMINALLY UNDERRATED TOO, THAT'S ANOTHER THING THEY HAVE IN COMMON. AND WHILE RETURN TO RAVENHOLM WOULD HAVE BEEN AWESOME [AS I CONSIDER OPFOR CANNON TOO], I DON'T PERSONALLY LIKE THE IDEA OF GRIGORI BECOMING WHAT HE HATES, EVEN IF IT WAS UNINTENTIONAL. FOR ME...IT SEEMS OUT OF CHARACTER FOR HIM BUT I'M NOT A WRITER FOR VALE SO WHAT DO I KNOW? LOL ALSO, IDK HOW TRUE IT IS, BUT I'VE HEARD PEOPLE SUGGEST THAT GRIGORI MITE NOT OF BEEN AN ACTUAL PRIEST BEFORE EVERYTHING WENT DOWNHILL, AND RATHER SIMPLY JUST PROCLAIMED TO BE ONE. POSSIBLY TO SAVE OTHERS [OR MAYBE TO REPENT FOR HIS OWN SINS]/ I CANNOT REMEMBER WITCH WAS STATED. I THINK IT WAS ON THE WIKI BUT I'M NOT SURE, AND TBH IDK IF I BELIEVE THAT OR NOT, BUT THAT'S NOT TO SAY, IT DOESN'T SEEM TOO FAR-FETCHED. IN A WAY I'M GLAD HIS FATES ARE UNKNOWN SO WE CAN ENVISION WHAT HAPPENED AND NOT HAVE IT "RUINED" BY "CANON". AND YET IT'S STILL ANNOYING ALL AT THE SAME TIME. SORRY FOR THE LONG ESSAY, AND FORGIVE ANY GRAMMAR/SPELLING ERRORS IF ANY ARE PRESENT. P.S IF YOU ARE DOING REQUESTS, COULD YOU DO THE LORE BEHIND ALYX VANCE NEXT? I KNOW YOU'VE ALREADY BEEN ASKED THAT BEFORE, BUT SHE'S MY FAVORITE HL2 CHARACTER. AND I THINK SHE'S A GREAT ROLE MODEL FOR A LOT OF WOMEN, BUT THAT'S JUST MY OPINION.
HEY THANK YOU FOR YOUR KIND WORDS! i FEEL LIKE TURNING GRIGORI INTO SOMETHING THAT HE HATES WOULD MAKE HIS CHARACTER EVEN MORE TRAGIC. HE TRULY WAS WRITTEN REALLY WELL, AND I DID FEEL BOTH SAD, AND PROUD OF HIM WHEN REPLAYING THESE CHAPTERS TO GAIN AN ADDITIONAL INSIGHT IN THE RESEARCH PART OF CREATION. ALYX IS ON MY LIST, AND WITH HOW LARGE HER STORY ARCH IS, I FEEL LIKE I WOULD NEED ADDITIONAL TIME TO PUT THAT ONE TOGETHER. IT'S ABSOLUTELY A POSSIBILITY! I WOULD LOVE TO MAKE A VIDEO ON HER!
@@Skyrionn AH I RESPECT YOUR OPINION. AND AS FOR ALYX SOUNDS GREAT, TAKE YOUR TIME SHE HAS A LOT TO BE RETOLD. AND AS FOR TRAGIC CHARACTERS, WHAT DO U THINK ABOUT DOUG, DO YOU THINK HE'S ALIVE?
Everytime I play through HL2 and leave Ravenholm, I can't help but to cry. Stupid, I know, but I just feel so bad for Grigori. He's all alone in the city and he might've died after running into the crypt (or by the Citadel's destruction). It's really the only reason stopping me from replaying the game, because I really don't like getting through this part.
It could be argued that "Anabelle" is an over-under shotgun based on Grigori's firing and reload animations and they didn't really see fit to change the model to reflect it.
ive recently been thinking about how HL1 occurs in New Mexico USA, and HL2 happens in eastern Europe. has this ever been discussed other than massive population control through displacement to an unfamiliar location or perhaps the combine figured out the greatest resistance was the USA and had its populace removed and the the entire continent of America razed?
i never got why people think father grigori is crazy, if anything he’s a hero; staying behind and not evacuating ravenholm so he can kill all of the headcrab zombies.

One more detail is that there's one bullet missing...means the gun is used
That's heartbreaking. One small detail I wish I had noticed! Great eye!
lol
Valve is the king of enviromental storytelling along with Fallout games. No matter how much people criticize them. Let it be L4D, Half Life or Portal. Its always worth to look around in these games. Always worth to pay attention cause part of the story is right there, infront of you. And only unfolds if you care to take a peek.
8:25 I love that room because it's clear that someone (probably father grigori) was trying to heal the zombies but realized that they couldn't, if that was father grigori then that's probably where he finally broke and realized that the best he could do was kill everyone.
It's heartbreaking
The only thing that can cure them is to end them from the suffering
no wonder he just broke down, knowing that the goo from the health kits can't save his buddies as he removed the headcrabs which nested upon their heads, all he knew was the only thing he could do is end their suffering right with their lifes.
My man Grigori knew what was up before anyone else. He went straight to right-click shotgunning and prop-killing instead of wasting time.
A man of action.
@@Skyrionn and sheer fuckin will
@@SkyrionnAnd unwavering commitment.
I am starting to regret setting them on fire
The scream is not reversed when they are lit up
@@tezcanaslan2877 I think it is slightly different - I heard a "Why me?" once which was so disturbing
that's why father Grigori shoots them in the head, he is mercy killing his people that are in constant pain, what a chad
@@kid_toucher aside from the ones he traps and burns... but we forgive thay
don't the headcrabs ensure the person remain alive since you can hear them moaning in pain? This means Grigori's beliefs is true that he is freeing his friends and allow them to move on to a better place
Yea they are parasites the people are still alive they are just trapped in their own bodies
@@SysKeyJS Depends on the type of headcrab.
It is a lot to write, watch a video about HL zombies to get the full picture and theories.
Well they ARE screaming for God
For Fast Head Crabs? No, I don't believe so. Poison maybe. Regular, yes, they are still aware and alive.
Great way to view it. If you have a link, I'd love to see how the whole world connects in that way
One thing we need to take into account is that most games don't represent their worlds on a 1:1 scale, either due to technical limitations or because the travel distances between "fun" areas would be too long and boring.
That's actually beautiful.
I know! After watching this video and thinking about this interpretation, going back there makes me want to cry more than cower
He is putting the HUMANS out of their misery by killing them, when a person is turned into a headcrab zombie they are alive trough the entire process, and after it, and they feel all of the pain

Absolutely makes sense
the wiki does say that Grigoris psychological state is due to trauma caused by the headcrab shelling
It really would have been great. Sad we didn't get it
There was one Father Grigori quote that got me thinking: "You are to be commended for avoiding my traps. The work of a man who once had too much time on his hands, and now finds time for nothing but the work of salvation."
This leads me to believe that Grigori began not as a religious person of any sort, but just as a survivor.
No it's confirmed that he was a pastor before.

Yes
Therefore, he would have transported Shepard to Grigori as a way of pointing them in the direction of the Borealis; this would make sense, as Shepard is one of the few people that was strong enough to even face off against Gordon Freeman (not to mention the professional obligation Shepard has with hunting Freeman down.)
I really don't know; not even sure this could be possible for Canon. Still, an interesting idea for a story.

I completely agree! Grigori was great,
I can imagine Gregori being woke in the night by the sounds of the fast zombies screaming at Gordon, the sound of the shotgun blasting through the town.

@@Skyrionn It's the Soldier one by the way "How it feels to play soldier"
You made a 21 minute video on Father Grigori?
I couldn't find a way to talk about him for more than 21 seconds!
What can I say, he was interesting :D
Imagine how badass father grigori would be with a HEV suit.
You might want to consider a redo for grigori and ravenholm as noclip has a video on a game named “ravenholm” which Valve cancelled. Lots juicy lore in there. For one, Grigori is immune to HC bite :)
Every time I played this section and had to leave Father Grigori to face alone his tragic destiny, it hurted. Damn, *this* is good storytelling.
Half-Life seems to be full of Schrodinger's cats: Grigori, OpFor's canonicity, Half-Life 3...
Would Gregori really hang his former friends up like trophies though?
I don't know if you already fixed the problem but great ways to make a room sonic dead are curtains, upholstered furniture, carpets or rugs
What little remain form the people who turned into zombies is crying to be saved so it's actually reasonable for him to think he saves them aside from going crazy
Sure you can't understand their words if you don't reverse their speech but their cry of pure suffering is pretty obvious be it if you damage them or not
I can hear on your audio in newer videos after this one that you figured out better audio but to anyone anyone who just stumbled here, boxes from eggs can be used as echo reducers and acoustic treatment for a room.
I saved the boxes after having bought eggs and so did my aunt and uncle for me, and I use the egg boxes instead of acoustic foam for my walls.
It looks butt ugly but it is a LOT cheaper and works good enough.
I knew I'had seen Santiago's face somewhere before xD
please keep going with these videos :)
More to come! Thanks for the support
Found this level spooky when I was a teenager too! FG was a fantastic character, as was this part in the game. I had no idea about the back story! Well done 👍 found on the half-life Reddit a link to the documentary, and then this video - half life lore is fascinating please do more mate! Cheers
Its pretty obvious Grigory is still alive because of chapter 4. Wish it wasn't scrapped as it had really cool puzzle mechanics.
LOL
ALSO, IDK HOW TRUE IT IS, BUT I'VE HEARD PEOPLE SUGGEST THAT GRIGORI MITE NOT OF BEEN AN ACTUAL PRIEST BEFORE EVERYTHING WENT DOWNHILL, AND RATHER SIMPLY JUST PROCLAIMED TO BE ONE.
I love how y'all forgot writing it in All-Caps.
I never noticed the cross branded on his hand.
It could be argued that "Anabelle" is an over-under shotgun based on Grigori's firing and reload animations and they didn't really see fit to change the model to reflect it.
The model is of a Lever-Action Rifle!
@@Potato_1108 I know that but the way he fires two high-power shots and the reload motion implies an over-under shotgun with slugs.
@@racer927 I know, I was just saying that the model was a Lever-Action.
ive recently been thinking about how HL1 occurs in New Mexico USA, and HL2 happens in eastern Europe. has this ever been discussed other than massive population control through displacement to an unfamiliar location or perhaps the combine figured out the greatest resistance was the USA and had its populace removed and the the entire continent of America razed?
Uh North America is gone dude the Globe in half life Alyx has a big X over it
@@oregonrailfan7046 havent played HL alyx
I’d like to think Father Grigori died once the last of his congregation was freed from their purgatory.
i never got why people think father grigori is crazy, if anything he’s a hero; staying behind and not evacuating ravenholm so he can kill all of the headcrab zombies.
When SHTF, you want people like Father Grigori backing you up.
I can imagine Gregori being woke in the night by the sounds of the fast zombies screaming at Gordon, the sound of the smg blasting through the town.
Wait, if he sleeps in that town, how the zombies does not know about his presence? They can break doors right? and enter the house he's sleeping in and eat him.. that weird..
You could cover yourself in a blanket or cover all the walls in blankets/foam
In GMOD, the father Gregori spawntool is in the list with animals
