    My father would play Corelli’s Christmas Concerto while we opened up our gifts early Christmas morning. I remember how magical it all felt: the beautiful Christmas tree all decorated, the gifts to open, the family closeness and of course the music.

    As children, my brother and I used to listen to this at Grandpa's house back in the 1940s and 50s. It was exciting and sweet and opened a door to a mystery about music that impelled us on a lifelong search. We wanted to know what could make us feel this way. What was it? What is this being, myself (and my Self), that can be so moved by this? My brother is long since gone, but I am still listening to and for that inner call, whatever it is, and seeking out whatever it called us to attend to.

      Beautifully expressed. I share that longing, that searching. Longing to find, but coming to accept, albeit reluctantly, that searching is the answer.

      @rivendell61 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The author, C. S. Lewis described a similar longing in his biographical book, Surprised by Joy. I would encourage seekers to find and read that book. I also am seeking joy, but I have found great satisfaction in a relationship with Jesus Christ, as did Lewis.

    This is one of the most interesting orchestras I've ever seen. The conductor playing both the organ and harpsicord, violins with German bows, the (guitar like instrument?) and the six-stringed bass just to name a few. What a cool group!

    • @h.washingtonsawyer6614
      @h.washingtonsawyer6614 2 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      It is a period-instrument baroque chamber music orchestra. The "guitar-like" instrument is a type of lute called a theorbo, the "bass" is a type of fretted viol called a violone. These are common instruments in basso-continuo.

    • @LucienMarine
      @LucienMarine ปีที่แล้ว +4

      It's a baroque ensemble! And therefore, musicians use instruments of that time. Violin, Viola, Cello have evolved over 150 years spanning the Baroque period. *Lucien*

    • @LucienMarine
      @LucienMarine ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@h.washingtonsawyer6614 The theorbo or teorbo from the lute family is a plucked string instrument created in Italy at the end of the 16th century. In the seventeenth century, the evolution of the theorbo followed two paths. the Roman theorbo, also called chitarrone and theorbo of Padua. The instrument has two types of strings. The theorbo was used both for basso continuo and as a solo instrument. It was also used for the accompaniment of the chant. Bach will use it very often in his cantatas and slight composition. *Lucien*

    Favorite performance of my favorite concerto of my favorite composer ... When I hear the pastoral, I sometimes drift off in my imagination to the little village of Bethany outside Jerusalem ... and witness once again the wonderful miracle when Jesus raised Lazarus from the dead ... and let the story unfold once again, with the pastoral as the soundtrack ... beauty, eh ?!

    Renowned violinist and pedagogue, Arcangelo Corelli spent his entire career in Rome. He composed mainly for the theater, the church and at the service of cardinals. The Concerto « For Christmas Eve » is the most famous of the twelve concerti grossi which were published in Amsterdam a year after his death and constitute his last opus. With this collection, Corelli stands out as one of the first great masters, along with Giuseppe Torelli, of the concerto grosso. This genre eminently representative of Baroque aesthetics, plays on the opposition between a group of soloists the concertino composed of two violins and a cello then a larger string ensemble called ripieno whose numbers can be expanded at will and whose role is to punctuate or reinforce the intervention of the soloists. The eighth concerto in G minor is, like the first seven, a « church » concerto whose movements preceded by tempo indications in Italian alternate between slow and lively tempos, homophonic and imitative writing. The work Fatto per la Notte di Natale is structured in six movements. The final Pastorale, which justifies its subtitle « For Christmas Eve » is linked to the last Allegro, contrasting by its tonality in G major and its tender swaying with of the musette sonorities. This Largo evokes the lovely nativities that the Italian painters of this period, such as Antonio Balestra and others, bequeathed to us. The twelve Concerti which form this opus constitute in fact a form of apogee of this musical form in the Baroque era, at the same time as a testimony to the exceptional talent as a violinist and conductor possessed by this Italian composer. *Lucien*
