  • This is the new 2017 BMW i3 94ah Range Extender and it now has a 243 mile range. A new 94ah battery means that it can also be charged from a DC socket up to 80% in just 40 minutes. The electric motor produces 168bhp and it will do 0-62mph in 8.3 seconds. The Rex, or range extender, is a small 2 cylinder engine that acts as a generator when the battery is low.
    Seating 4 adults, the new BMW i3 has a spacious interior and its silent running is very relaxing. The latest incarnation of iDrive infotainment is easy to use and offers everything from satellite navigation to DAB radio and streaming services. There is also a smartphone app that can be uses as a remote for the car.
    The 2017 BMW i3 94ah costs from £27,830 (with UK government electric car grant) or the Range Extender from £30,980.

      Yes, it can do 240 miles especially in the city when you are braking all the time. If its warm outside and the battery has heated up you can get 115 miles out of the battery before the REx kicks in at 6%, the REx will add an additional 120 miles or so on just 2.4 gallons of gas.

    This car is the first car that I've owned. So impressed with the build video's that after a short drive, I paid cash and put my money where my mouth was and bought the 94 BEV. The car is brilliant, so nice to drive, with it's high vantage view. Even in the rear, it is still good to look out of, with good visibility even looking forward. This is one of the few video's that I've watched where I did not think the opinion differs from mine. When more places in the UK have good reliable chargers, my choice of going for pure electric will be vindicated.

      It's not an electric car. FYI. I own two Teslas...those are electric. This, for some reason, will definitely use GAS especially in cold weather.
      For 50k...the i3 should have given everyone 200 miles of range and just left out the gasoline motor.

    • @EricAtRandom
      @EricAtRandom 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@MH-wm6df I'm looking at these used, and I'm solidly against the range extender. If I go electric, I'm going fully electric. But the mileage hit is pretty massive. I'm thinking the compromise is that I'll be renting a combustion car for long trips, but I rarely touch upon 100 miles in a routine day. The '17 Chevy Bolt has way longer range at a similar price, but I really like the feel of the i3 better. Decisions, decisions!

    This is what hybrids should be, an electric motor as the main drive and a small ICE used for emergency charging. Pure electric is best for efficiency and weight compared to hybrids.

    • @japzone
      @japzone 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      It's always puzzled me why Range Extenders aren't given more attention. They have the best of both worlds, electric and gas. Plus, unlike your typical gas car, in a range extender the engine is always working in its sweet spot, allowing it greater fuel efficiency and less wear. This way you have the benefits of an electric plugin, but get the added range of a gas car when needed. You'll save a ton on a gas.

    • @DonTHEhandsome1
      @DonTHEhandsome1 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      japzone It is less effective to use a gas motor to create electricity to drive an electric motor that then drives the car. Range extenders have far less range than a real hybrid car. It is more to relieve buyers of range anxiety. This new battery makes the range extender useless for daily commutes.
      Hybrids use an ottoman engine design rather than a regular 4 stroke design. They only provide drive after the initial trust from the electric motor so it can operate at an optimum RPM.

    • @geoffflight2289
      @geoffflight2289 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      What they dont tell you is that tiny generators are range EXTENDERS meaning, you can still run out of charge and be left standing still. If you want to go long distances, it simply wont do it. You want a PROPER hybrid where the petrol motor drives the rear wheels and the electric powers the front. when the battery runs down you still have an actual engine to move your car. It is the literal 'best of both worlds'.

    Honestly, with a 39.5kwh 94Ah battery and DC Fast Charge capability, you don't need that range extender 99.9% of the time.
    If you are buying a used REx i3, be sure it is either still under warranty or purchase an extended warranty.

I have to say I am extremely impressed with Kia's build quality. I've never owned a Kia before, but I'm sold on them. Every button, switch, dial, knob, lever and door has a solid, no-wiggle design. The _ONLY_ thing I wish it had was slightly more range (I'm getting about 90 miles on a 100% charge, which is fine for me 99% of the time). The 2020 has more than twice the range and horsepower, but it is not available in the US and won't be. :(

    Your quoted range miles bear NO relation to the accepted or even BMW advertised range!

    • @mamadouaziza2536
      @mamadouaziza2536 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      But if you drive in the city and do lots of stopping and going the range will increase due to energy being put back into the battery.

      I just confirmed with my local dealership that the 2017 BMW i3 gets 180 miles of range WITH the gasoline range extender. The pure electric drive is about 114. And after consulting with a friend who HAS the i3, he estimates a real world range of 150 under normal American urban life driving conditions (combination of highway and local commute on a daily basis).
      So I really don't see where the 247 miles of range come from?
      I mean, the new Chevy Bolt only has 238 miles of range acclaimed, and that car has the longest range on the market right now (even longer than a base model Tesla Model S). How is the BMW i3 beating the Bolt with a smaller battery pack is beyond me.

    36k is still allot to pay for a car with only 200 miles range which resembles a shoe box
    .
    With this money You can buy a BMW 4 series coupe diesel with 900 miles range and use the 7000 pounds saved to run the car for the next 8 years

    0-62 in 8.1 seconds? that's ridiculous and pathetic for BMW and the price that they asking for this car.

      @insidelane  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Habib Aghasafari Respect the vast amount of tech in this car. It's not a super car.

    • @habibaghasafari2237
      @habibaghasafari2237 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      it's not a super car, but it's comparable to Tesla model 3 that can do 0-62 in under 6 seconds and a lot less if you get the ludicrous option.

      Are you serious? That's a very fair time. There are many electronic cars that use over 10 seconds.

      Arnis Tarassu The vast majority of cars don't have rear heated seats. I think you are missing the point of this car.

      I thought that too until I drove a BMW i3, I still have a 2012 Volvo C70 D3 which I love but the BMW i3 is so much more fun and more practical than the Volvo, I'll regret selling the Volvo but the BMW is just a fantastic bit of kit, and way more fun away from the lights! 😁

    Wonder why BMW didn't opt for a micro-turbine range extender engine.....instead of the two cyl banger. MTs seem to be buzz lately for range extenders lately

    Sorry, but you ARE inconvenienced when you go past 243miles. A petrol car simply refills with petrol, but this hybrid has to sit and wait for it to recharge.

    my only problem with electric cars is that you can't take them on road trips. and for me that's a big thing for me when it comes to my bikes and cars. sure maybe you could in America now. but what about 3rd world countries like thailand Indonesia Philippines and so on. they don't have any charge stations. so road trips become impossible

  • @markukblackmore

    • @insidelane

      Erm... Good question. I think it is about £2/3 something like that, Which considering the range that gives you is a good saving.

      Mark, I pay about 10.75p per kwh in my house. So, if, when I plug in in the battery has say 20% left in, that would be 6.6 kwh (assuming 33kwh battery). \So, to charge it up to 100% you would be putting in 26.4 kwh, so, 26.4 x 10.75p+= £2.84p
