@@CorridorCrew watch crows zero 1 and 2 its a japanese movie you'll love it
Spike Lee showed such an immense misunderstanding of everything that made the original Oldboy what it was
Oldboy is one of a very small set of movies that I consider to be *perfect*. I never seriously considered watching the remake. And that’s not “oh the original is sooo much better” snobbery. I think it actually would detract from the experience the next time I watch the original to have the comparison in my head. And from comments like yours that I’ve heard, I think I’ll stick with that policy. What do you think? Do you regret watching the remake at all, or was it worth seeing even just to appreciate the original even more?
@@RickGladwin I always felt like watching the remake is just a wast of time. The original didn`t age bad and its not one of those movie with a good idea and bad execution. So there is just no reason to watch the remake instead of just rewatching the original.
@@RickGladwin I'm curious if you ever read the original manga the Korean movie is based on? If so, What you think of it? The manga is drastically different from the movie.
@@christopherarcella4056 No I never did. Think I should?

Oldboy's corridor scene is one of the best fight scenes I ever see, so much energy and willpower there, damn!

Drunken master is one of his best thats a great spot to start
@@acablikeineedataxi Yes! That's a great one! Another one that's more modern and Western but still really good is Mr. Nice Guy. There's a fight scene in a construction site where he rolls over the blade of a real table saw as it's running. They also fight around the wheels of one of those massive construction vehicles where the wheels are bigger than you - again, as it's moving. He's about half a second from being crushed.

The Jackie Chan fight scene at the beginning was like a live-action remake of a Tekken fight.
Yes
@@mesesakeekedo8190 you mean tekken was a remake of a Jackie Chan fight...
"If you're gonna capture a fight scene, CAPTURE the fight scene." Thank you! My biggest issue with modern action films (since around the mid 2000s or so I think I noticed it but it happened sooner than that sometimes, now it's standard) is the super fast camera cuts and shaky cam, I can't see what's going on. I learned how to choreograph from Jackie, and the cinematography. I want fight scenes that follow the action clearly, that really showcase the excellent choreography that goes to waste when the camera's all over the place. Instant subscribe, if you agree with that I think I'm gonna like your videos ^_^
Go watch the Jackie Chan video from every frame a painting (youtube channel) They’re whole point there is practically plagiarized from him (including the takes they show while making the point).
That's why they made such a big deal about West Side Story. If you watch most modern musicals, there are constant cuts. So it's not a "dance routine". It's this move, then that move, then this shot. My friend directs stage musicals and can't stand it.
While I understand the complaint from the point of view of a stunt person, I think that it ignores the purpose of the scene in the film. In a Jackie Chan movie, much of the point of the movie is the fight scenes and watching that spectacle. In "Oldboy", the point of the scene is to show the exhaustion and tenacity. But in a movie like "The Bourne Identity" (which is the first movie I can think of where I saw a shakycam fight), the point of at least some of those fight scenes was to put the audience inside the fight: to make them experience the chaos and messiness of a fistfight.
I feel like the desire for every fight scene to be perfectly choreographed and shot with supreme clarity is kind of like making sure that every car crash is shot like it's in a Michael Bay film. Can you imagine the car crash at the end of "No Country for Old Men" with a Michael Bay fireball and explosion and shot from four different angles? To me, that's what cramming a perfectly choreographed, well-lit Jackie Chan fight scene into a movie like "Oldboy" would feel like. Which is weird. I feel like they're simultaneously calling for these "let's clearly see exactly what's going on" fight scenes while simultaneously praising a fight scene that does the opposite.
Which is not to say that they're aren't a large number of chaotically filmed fight scenes that are incorrectly choosing to film it that way because they're just following the bandwagon. There absolutely are, and they're just as inappropriate. But it's simply not a one-size-fits-all scenario.
The reason they use the quick cuts and shaky camera work is the same reason why monster movies are always in the dark. They are hiding lack of good action or a really bad monster costume. I saw a Micheal Bay movie car chase scene were they had the quick cuts, shakey camera work, extreme close ups, intense music, and all it was was two cars driving as if you were following your friend to a party with maybe a few lane changes.
The Bourne movies did it.
One shot I found out was practical recently: Iron Man 3 Plane Rescue Scene.
8 days, 10 skydive jumps a day, 13 people skydive choreography.
Practical effects in an MCU movie. Those were the days.
@@keno4770 Raimi's Spider-Man Maguire was practical not this bullshtt animated body and mask crap I'm glad Sony taking it back

Yes. I was legitimately surprised they didn't do them too here, because they're fairly similar
daredevil was rather unbelievable in season 1, same problem as Spike Lee's Oldboy just has infinite energy. They did a much better job in season 2 but again like Spike Lee's Oldboy is ego stroking cinematography rather than telling a story.

A really good fight scene was in the first series of Daredevil where he fights the Russians even though he was really hurt. It is well shot, the fight feels like it has real weight because of the strikes and the intentions behind them. The scene is cool to watch and it is a great look into the focus and determination of the character.
I believe the showrunner said he was inspired by the original Oldboy fight one take for the Daredevil one take in season 1, that fight scene also has no hidden cuts or edits, 3 minute take.
This isn't even Hollywood, this is Hong Kong cinematography
Old boy is korean...yeah it's not hollywood
@@megnome it's Korrewood.
10:47 missed opportunity to say CORRIDOR scene
HK cinema is hands down the best in the world when it comes to action.
Apart from that scene from the Old Boy remake, the title is indeed misleading.
Reaction recommendation: Hardcore Henry, 1st person action movie shot in Russia. In the behind the scenes, the director talks about how they took some big risks and disregarded safety quite a few times due to their low budget. He says at one point that on their list of stunts for the film, some of them had skulls beside them. The stunt men knew that these scenes had a not-insignificant potential for death. They did some crazy things like filming a chase over the top of a metal bridge without any wires or safety nets, and without even stopping traffic below.
the stunts in that movie are insane
@Karl Dennis The behind the scenes on the blu ray
The way he talks about how a real fight scene works, sizing up the opponent and getting him in your rhythm is so true. Nothing is more true than the fight scene in The protector, Tony Jaa vs the capoeira dude. beautiful choreography fight scene
Jackie Chan, Bruce Lee, Jet li, Donnie Yen... these guys are legends.

We already saw old boy which inspired all that.
They reacted to the s1 fight scene, all they said was how good they take breather, wtf does that mean
The prison sequence!
I agree
I see you be rocking those shades, Matt 😂.
There’s one thing that absolutely MAKES old school fight scenes and WRECKS modern ones: light. Back in the day when they cared about making great fight scenes, the scene was well lit and you could SEE the action. Nowadays the moment the fighting starts the lights go out, and we get to see nothing. Or else the scene is cluttered with cgi to hide the action. Movies nowadays rely on insanely loud soundtracks, effects, bells and whistles to cue the viewers’ adrenaline, instead of putting talented ppl in front of the camera and letting them do their thing.
Good to see eastern movies/actors, fighting scenes are really good in that part. Even in the modern days, like the the toe Raid movies (especislly the second).
Jackie Chan in his PRIME TIME was the best of the best action stunts movies ever of all time
He still has a Prime Time hole in his head.
@@purefoldnz3070 Nothing like falling two stories onto a rock with the back of your head
word !
I still really love the knife fight scene in Winter Soldier, Bucky vs Steve, on the street. So beautifully choreographed.
Agreed. It was close, super personal, no fancy cgi, super powers and all that.
This was my problem with the Black Panther movie. I liked the story but the fights were so underwhelming. The main character and his friends are basically martial artists but yet the fights were just standard hits, blocks, and twirls- no flow or dance like in Winter Soldier or Civil War.
Also that sweet elevator fight
Winter Soldier is one of the best Marvel's movies ever made. I loved that film, for me it was even better than the Avengers trilogy.

Too bad too. I sat with a huge grin watching the first three, but there was no funny, no chemistry in this one. It's nice to get the stunts explained, but it isn't enough.
The old Jackie chan movies will always be the grestest! I like how they comment that their great fight scenes. I've scene it interviews where Jackie always says his primary focus was getting good fight scenes on film
Another thing why in the Original Oldboy fight scene really works is that it establishes that the hallway is very slim and so everyone cant move much hence the reason why there are like one by one attacking him (although the others who are at the back are still trying to get him somehow). On the remake, the place has a huge ass space, even three of themj get get to him but there still go to him one by one. They wont even attack him when he is facing on the other side (while on the original its like all possible sides there is someone trying to reach him, regardless of the space).
Honestly, I'd really love to see more from Tony Jaa. His fight scenes have always been my favorites. Especially in the Protector and Ong-Bak.

That's because Bruce Lee was on a whole other level and was trained by a master martial artist (Ip Man)

YES! Thank you, It trigged me massively, that he said that wasn't Bruce Lee's voice.
The locker fight scene in Grosse Pointe Blank was an homage to the fight scene with Jackie Chan in Wheels On Meals. Both fight scenes starred the great Benny "The Jet " Urquidez . Benny was a teacher and mentor to John Cusack in kickboxing as well.
Wait, you're doing Bruce but not Enter the Dragon?
And not Three Dragons?
You need to give Sammo and Yuen some love.
Especially Yuen, because he can fly. He can literally fly
...Like someone folded him into a human paper plane and threw him !...
effortlessly gliding through the air. As opposed to the other 2 of The Three Dragons, Yuen seemed to commit to some crazy distance like a coiled spring triggered and "phooof" (as the old sound effects used to go) through the air at a foolish foe.
Jackie has outright agility and commitment to seemingly impossible stunts.
Sammo has ridiculously sharp precision and flow.
Yuen has a bit of both of those but really commits to airborne stuff, jumping and flipping or distance launches.
Some of THE best airborne stuff i ever saw.
Good call, James.
i'd like to see The Corridor Crew take 30 mins and chat about the impact of The Three Dragons.

I mean, he can fly can't he?
Only the the supernatural power of flight can explain that man.
Bruce's battle with the guards was magnificent.
I watched a program about the three dragons.
Apparently, because they come from old school wushu, where they perform on stage, they can memorise and perform flawlessly these long, balletic choreographed sequences.
This is why old Hong Kong cinema has long, single cuts.
@@MostlyPennyCat Yes brother. Commitment to well rehearsed routines and being familiar and trusting of your fellow "fighters" coming from the "Only one take, no take" of Stage acting that never allowed them to be reliant or fall back on many camera angles and many takes. It's one of the reasons i love a lot of the old stuff..well, two actually...
My knowledge of real fighting arts (quite rusty in practice these days) and that of great cinema....a freakingly well shot wide take where i can fully appreciate the ballet i am watching. Keep most of the fight at a distance and long takes, only come in close for accentuated parts or character moments, then pull back again and let it roll !
Long live the ethics of Wushu !
Where all the super acrobatic stuff originated from.
>places right fist on open left palm & bows

Let us just hope that the Chinese leave Hong Kong alone.
Accept them for what they are, the inspiration for modern China.
As a British man I consider the Hong Kong Cantonese as brothers, the same as Canadians, Australians and New Zealanders.
And the Nigerians. And the Jamaicans.
And all the others, brothers and sisters, every one.
James Neave I legit just watched Enter the dragon yesterday
Kung fu Hustle was a pretty entertaining movie.
Have they done anything from Kung fu Hustle?
Danny Bonilla I requested the same thing.
