    Saw with my 8 year old daughter and her first response when we walked out was, "that was exhausting, can we see it again!!" Cause she cried and was so invested.

    The most classic image of the Black Panther for me is that old comic where he wrestles a rhino to the ground. When they did that in the movie I was like, “Yes! This is what I want for my comic book movies.” Give me those classic scenes.

      Gregory Floriolli ..I also love that quick shot where the guy shines his flashlight up in the tree and sees Black Panther up there looking down at him.

    I went with my son who is 13. When Jordan walks in to find his father and holds him my son teared up and hugged my arm. As an almost grown man, which made me tear up. GREAT MOVIE.

    Man, you missed the strongest part of the Kilmonger/N'Jobu interaction. After "No tears for me?", Kilmonger actually does shed 1 single tear. That was powerful.

  • @dithom4994
    @dithom4994 6 ปีที่แล้ว +117

    i was wondering why no other review mentioned Killmonger's father's line "No tears for me?" i loved that moment of realization from his father's spirit seeing what his cause ultimately did to his son; when he was unfortunately taken from him at a young age.

    • @weatherboy0149
      @weatherboy0149 6 ปีที่แล้ว +33

      For real. Also notice how when Killmonger's younger self holds his dead father in the flashback, it's reminiscent of T'Challa holding his father in Civil War after T'Chaka died.

      i actually preferred tchalla talking to his dad because as someone who lost his dad. that meant a lot to me.
      killmonger felt like a typical cliche American black male thinking the world owes him something and even mentioned killing children.
      like news flash dude not only "your" people have been opressed in history.
      visit a reservation then you'll beg to return to the hood lol. or a trailer park.

  • @jessmanuel540
    @jessmanuel540 6 ปีที่แล้ว +87

    You forgot to mention the best scene from the movie: Erik Killmonger said he'd rather be buried in the ocean like when his ancestors jumped ship because they believed death is better than bondage. Epic!

    • @backlandlands5793
      @backlandlands5793 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Except Killmonger was Wakandan, so his ancestors were not taken and even if they had been he would not have been born if his ancestors jumped ship ( bare in mind I agree with the sentiment that death is better than bondage)

    • @theantagonist2332
      @theantagonist2332 6 ปีที่แล้ว +31

      Maybe he was referring to his moms side, since she was American. His dad was Wakandan though like you stated.

    • @jessmanuel540
      @jessmanuel540 6 ปีที่แล้ว +16

      ''Ancestors'' may include uncles, long-distant cousins, or even great-great-great grandfathers who jumped ship and leaves behind their children aboard with their mothers and other relatives.

  • @jsoul99
    @jsoul99 6 ปีที่แล้ว +244

    The most powerful part of the film to me was when he went back to the ancestral plane the 2nd time. T'challa Confronted his father and his ancestors and told them they we're wrong. He stood up to them and let them know that what they did by "preserving" Wakanda also led to the suffering of people around the world who looked just like them. How as Kevin brought out , If they hadnt done so Killmonger who had every right to be brought home wouldnt even exist the way he does. Its a lesson that while our ancestors deserve to be honored for all the sacrifices and the work they've done ... They were not perfect. And its up to us as their off spring to right their wrongs using the resources we have today. Change starts with us. We sculpt the future and move culture and the fate of our people forward NOW with bravery and leadership that benefits all people.

      So basicslly you dont care about a fictional character or their history... unless the character has the same skin colour as u? But all other skin colours that do the same thing are racists... because all black people are the same, with the same history, and same culture...
      The most ridiculous part of this movie is how Wakanda is stil just a small nation sorrounded by other small nations which they would of been at war with for thousands of years before they advanced as a tribe into a nation....but they dont further explain it, just have a revenge plot over a white race thst in thie film, hasnt ensalved any of its people.... only others... a storyline of an african tribe advancing whilst at the same time every tribe in afirica was at war 1000 years ago, grows into a nation unhappy with the stste of the war , so they protect the innocent, cspture and reveal the wicked who have been manipulating its own people so that all the nations find peace and all live happiy back within there own natins... would of been so much more amazing then... i am black, you are white... i hate you cuz u white.. we must help anyone whos black. They must be all good...... the movie treats black culture like its not at all different with it own history and horrors

    I'm glad Kevin isn't afraid of showing emotion. For a long time I worried about it because literally any work of art,has the potential to crush me. Now I don't care because I'd rather enjoy my life. If you're scared to show emotion you're not really living. You're just pissing away a lot of effort trying to look hard. That's pretty stupid.

    As long as they keep giving us quality movies like Black Panther... my answer is NEVER. So great to see the combination of brilliant storytelling, brilliant acting, brilliant direction, brilliant costuming/stage dressing, brilliant music, and just overall brilliant movie making that we've been gifted with.

    This movie is a miracle for all the kids who never had a superhero movie they could idealize and relate to and identify with. I hope this movie makes a billion dollars so we get more Black Panther movies and more Africa movies. It’s definitely worth multiple viewings. This sits right up here with Homecoming and The Dark Knight as my favorite superhero movie.

    • @reformedbear1479
      @reformedbear1479 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Daniel Thomas MacInnes why can’t those kids identify with most superheroes? Wouldn’t you think a character that is the monarchist ruler of a nation probably less relatable than most other superheroes?

    • @theworldsgreatestdetective8127
      @theworldsgreatestdetective8127 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Daniel Thomas MacInnes I'm sorry but I can't relate with an African king of the most technologically advanced country on the planet. Or do you mean because he's black?

    • @chrisjfox8715
      @chrisjfox8715 6 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      edward vandermeulen they can identify with other superheroes. They always have and always will. But, yes, it being a black superhero makes it *even more* identifiable to a kid that's black. Movies are to be enjoyed by everyone but most films have a target demographic that is drawn to it even more because of the characters being a part of that same demographic (young girls drawn to Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants, college students drawn to American Pie, kids drawn to The Sandlot, etc). I remember being 10yrs old seeing Macauley Culkin in Home Alone and feeling how cool it would be to be his friend because he was the same age as me.
      Like the analogy I made on another video, kids love superheroes because they imagine how amazing it would be to be that hero...but make a movie where the superhero *is a kid* (like Spy Kids and Sharkboy & Lavagirl) then suddenly the kid watching will imagine themselves as that hero even more (as long as it's a good movie). That kid will still love Batman and Superman but it's a unique experience for them to see a kid on screen instead.
      Either way, you don't have to agree with it. It's a very real psychological phenomenon that a lot of people will more quickly connect with characters that look like them. You can not accept it if you want but it won't change the reality; you not being able to relate to that reality doesn't make it false.

    • @azrael80304
      @azrael80304 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      ChrisJ Fox thank you for your comment I just don't understand why so many people are butt hurt and bitter about black kids having a superhero who looks like them that they can relate to it seems they're Only Happy When blacks are depicted in film as gangbangers and drug dealers or rappers.

      The odd part is. Black Panther is not an american. He is not even close to an american. The american guy is an jerk, asshole, murderer, idiot and the villain of the movie.
      And heroes transcendence race and skill color anyway. Bruce Lee would be a great example of this. ;-)

    I've been waiting for this review/rant all weekend and it didn't disappoint. I saw it Sunday night in IMAX with a jam-packed audience and absolutely loved it from start to finish. Ryan Coogler is 3-0 and has to be considered one of the best new directors today. The cast and story were incredible! Thanks for posting Kevin! Wakanda Forever!

      I absolutely love all 3 of Coogler’s films, I balled my eyes out at the end of Fruitvale Station. It’s gonna be weird when he makes Black Panther 2 without Michael B Jordan, they’re the unbeatable duo, I’m sure it’ll still be fantastic. I’m sure they’ll team up again between BP films.

    Kevin, If when u watch BP again , pay attention to the little jewels placed in the movie dealing with social times of the day. How the base for Wakanda in America is in Oakland. The birth place for the Black Panther movement in the 60's. How Killmonger also represents African Americans being abandoned by Africa (That is an issue that is talked about in certain circles) And how deep Killmongers last words are.

    • @coreym8145

      didnt killmonger imply wakanda sold off the slaves at the end of the movie?

    • @xandertrejo

      No he was relating himself to the slaves that would jump off the slave trade ships because 'they would rather be dead than in chains'

      ah, i thought he was saying wakanda sold them or didnt save them when they should have. i am not black or american so some of the race stuff went over my head i think.

    • @xandertrejo
      @xandertrejo 6 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      COREY M
      Well he did say that the people outside of Wakanda are Wakanda's people just like the people inside and that they should protect them all. So you are right about that part. He was upset that Wakanda did nothing about the race relations in the world even though they were more than capable.

    • @InfiniteUmbra
      @InfiniteUmbra 6 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      It wasn't so much that Africa abandoned African Americans, but more on how we've been separated, much like he and his father and him and his/our people in Wakanda/Africa when we all should've been looking to reunite. That and that last line was heavy. It was powerful.

    For everyone who WANTED Killmonger to live, could you argue against HIS reason why he let himself die? What reasoning could you give that doesn't contradict the very reasoning you respect him for? "Bury me in the ocean, with my ancestors who knew death was better than bondage."

    • @cmike123
      @cmike123 6 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      That's an easy one. Tell him you would jail him for a little bit, but that you ultimately want him to experience Wakanda the way a citizen would. You wouldn't even jail him for long as he did not break any rules. He did burn the herb though. So short time. Show him some love like they did for Bucky.

    • @ruzaroos
      @ruzaroos 6 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      His last line is the only thing about the movie that actually bothers me. Not that he said it; he's shown to be a sociopath the entire movie so it makes sense for him to say it. It bothers me that the film doesn't rebuff the statement in that moment. Clearly Killmonger's ancestors have to be the African's who stayed on the boat because they knew that everything isn't about you. You don't get decedents when you are dead, unless you jumped AND left your children on the boat. The nuance of that line is that death is preferred when you have no connectivity to anything else or simply don't care about anything else, like Killmonger. If you have something to protect or want to see develop, you persevere through the struggle. Killmonger was willing to kill countless people to take the throne, but he was not willing to stick out prison. It was a very powerful line, but its logic is as flawed as the character who spoke it.

    In order to be a great BLACK Man in America’s society today you have to have a equal balance of T’Challa and Killmonger. Enough sense to see more than just your side, listen to people, understand where their mindset is, and move in a humble/royal way that’s makes people double take at you, because you showed them your more than just your skin tone. That’s the T’Challa side.
    The other side is being woke, not forgetting your history and where you come from, be your brothers keeper in the right way, not on some killing G’ money type shit. Be educated so that nobody can fool you, or try an throw a vail over your eyes. Having the balls to make a difference and fight for your beliefs and core values, and be outspoken unapologetically. And ultimately be willing to lay your life down if someone opposes you. That’s the Killmonger way.
    Both were educated, strong, and have meaningful causes behind them. Only difference was the way in which to accomplish the goal. So in turn that’s why this movie was remarkable to me. And that’s the honest truth.

Regarding the movie, as an African American male, when T'challa falls to his knees and starts crying after he sees his father again, and T'chaka says "stand up, you are a king!" I just welled up. What a powerful message to young black males who do not understand their history. Amazing movie with a powerful positive message of hope for everyone. I went to see it with my wife and mother in Slovenia. My mother in law from what I was told falls asleep usually in movies. She was up the entire time. They both loved it. Now we're in Slovenia, a small country in Europe where most of it's citizens have never seen a black person in real life. Especially children. Everywhere I go there, I'm met by curious stares. So my wife tells me that after the movie ended and we left the theater, these kids see me and start pointing at me excitedly, smiling and all. It really made me smile because I can only imagine what these kids were thinking. Here they are seeing a Black superhero in his own movie for the first time and then they see me, a black man for the first time right after.

      Not to mention with my height and build, I fit the super hero mold. This was a role I wanted before they cast Chadwick. People would tell me they could definitely see me as Black Panther. Chadwick kills it in this movie. When I saw him in Civil War, I was at peace with his portrayal. Especially when he adopted the accent. I never understood how Scarlett Johansson plays a Russian operative and has not a lick of an accent.

    First of your reviews I have watched, really enjoyed it. Appreciate your enthusiasm and it’s really interesting to hear from a actual filmmaker.

      Saw it in 4DX too, but it was jarring AF during the fight scenes. Not a fan, but wanted to see what the 4DX fuss was about. Only the car chase scene felt tailor-made for the format.

    Great review, Great plug (daring to do the other side of your face). I took my daughter and we loved it. This is beyond simply a black movie. I believe it will help people to redefine the view of Africa.

    Fantastic movie! The Dora Milaje had me ready to shave my head. Most powerful quote to me was, "A man who has not prepared his children for his death has failed as a father."

    While we are comparing Black Panther to James Bond, was the casino in Seoul in Panther the same casino as the Quantum of Solace?

      Nah, that casino was in definitely European. I am talking about the casino in Macau, where he battles some Komodo dragons and meets the lady who takes him to see Javier Bardem on a creepy abandoned island.

      The casino in James Bond was in Macau, but the casino in Black Panther was shot in Atlanta.

    Great perspective from Kevin..... I completely agree with every point.... the social elements were wonderful especially for me but the attention to detail is what does it for me.... I love the MCU because all the movies is like one big puzzle and everything makes sense while staying true to majority of the comics..... Not taking away what it means for the culture but its really just a GREAT film.... and probably the most well thought out and perfectly executed superhero movie ever....💯

    Seeing the Dora Milajie on screen was INSPIRING and so fantastic I can't even put it into the right words. We need more of them. We need a whole movie on Okoye
