I think Courtney has been using extreme vocals for a long time! It's just that Tatiana has godly resonances. She's a once in a lifetime vocalist. Beautiful and subtle vibrato on her cleans too! Astonishing.
This is the best unrehearsed collaboration of 2024. When both women start singing together, Tati's harsh vocal back up harmony sounded like she was channeling Chester Bennington. It was totally awesome.
0:07 Not a new song. It's a few years old. The performance is new (2024). Just FYI. 6:19 Nope, both ladies have been doing it for awhile. Courtney is 35, Tati is 37 and both have been doing it since they were in their teens. It's just a difference in their harsh styles. Tati does go lower than Courtney, but what you're hearing is Courtney's highs with melodic breaks (flipping into true voice). If you want to see the true depth of her harshes, check out Spiritbox's live performance of Angel Eyes released last year. You get highs, you get lows, you get a banshee shriek... you even get a very brief pig squeal.
I love the vibe that they're just tow metal friends having a good time ilup there. As to technique, I feel like growling tone has as much to do with personality as clean singing voice does, and that Tati's history just gives her more pain, darkness, and rage to channel into her development of the technique and into performance. Courtney on the other hand seems like she may be more technical, or at least I hear more variety of harsh vocal techniques from her.
Great reaction. We were there at LTL for this. What a treat and absolute gem! Both are beautiful singers with clean and harsh vocals. I think you would enjoy Arch Enemy. Swedish Melodic Metal Band… Alissa’s vocals are AMAZING, both clean and harsh. From the harmonizing guitars to the screaming solos to the heavy drum fills and tasty bass riffs… please check out ‘Handshake with Hell’ the OMV (not the summer recap) first, then ‘The Eagle Flies Alone’ they are one of my favorite bands and highly underrated. Thanks!
If you are exploring Spiritbox's oeuvre, you shouldn't miss the Official Music Video for "Holy Roller." When you have recovered, watch the video of Harper's cover in her home studio...
Lol gr8 collab..... tati is a gr8 vocal technician for false chord harsh-clean switches as usual and courtney also does a gr8 job with all her vocals. Jinjer - Audiotree From Nothing (Live Performance)
Perhaps I should point out that the Festival FOH sound mixer totally screwed up the sound for this song (Tati's mic was too quiet.) This mix was done from the raw feeds by the bass player, Josh Gilbert.
I think it’s not so much time spent doing harsh vocals but rather a style choice. Tatiana specializes in low growls which is whole different technique than the higher screams that Courtney uses. Growling definitely has that big resonance; for me the higher screams can carry more of a „note“ in them and convey emotion differently. Each adds their own flavor and together, pure magic!
The layering of clean and harsh vocals in many parts of the song is also done on the studio version, so the song was kinda written to have those layers. But obviously Courtney can sing only one of those layers live, so this was the first time both were present in live setting. They did add a bit more growls now that Tati was there, tho. I especially like how they worked with the different harsh vocal styles here - there was a natural progression from cleans to Courtney's scream to Tati's deep growl.
For some reason I thought you had done a one of their songs before. My mistake, welcome to Spiritbox. Formed in Victoria ,BC Canada in 2017 by husband and wife duo, lead singer Courtney LaPlante and guitarist Mike Stringer. They had then recently left their former band Iwrestledabearonce, a band which Tatiana had listened to. Zev Rose on drums since 2020. Josh Gilbert (ex - As I Lay Dying) joined on bass in 2022, made permanent the next year. they use a variety of styles. Metalcore, prog, alt metal, djent, post metal, hard rock, nu metal, deathcore , and melodic metalcore have all been used trying to describe them. Most songs have a mix of clean and harsh. There are some all harsh and some all clean too. I prefer the mixed vocal style songs, but all are good. Courtney and Tati do sound great together. Love the part near the end where Courtney is singing clean and Tati growling behind her. They length of time they both have been doing this isn't that different, just different styles of harsh. The song is on their first full album, 2021's Eternal Blue. 4 EP's, and a 2nd album(Tsunami Sea) due in March. For more from Spiritbox, try "Rule of Nines" or "Jaded" for mixed vocals. "Constance' or "Ultraviolet" for all cleans. "Holy Roller" or "Cellar Door" for all harsh. And 2 singles from the upcoming album are out, "Soft Spine " (all harsh) and "Perfect Soul" 9all clean). "Soft Spine" was also performed at this same Louder Than Life festival, with guest Poppy.
This was a great suggestion Chris. I’m glad I finally got to hear one of their songs and it was nice having Tati in it which I knew what to expect from her. Hopefully I’ll get to more of their stuff in the future.
Just some correction: Spiritbox has been around for 7 years. The song will be 4 years old in a few months. The only thing new about this is that Tatiana is performing it live with them. And this is also part of a series of 3 live pro-shot videos Spiritbox released late last year which were also the first live pro-shot concert videos they ever released.
That explains why the raw feeds had been saved to disk, so that Josh Gilbert could do this mix. It also explains the drone footage for "Soft Spine" (the continuous drone footage is on the shorter video on the Rise Records channel.)
Love Courtney but, Worship Tati! As someone else commented, Tati has a once in a lifetime voice. I see Spiritbox every time they’re within 100 miles. Jinjer I see every time they’re within 500 miles. 2023 5 times in 5 states 2024 3 times in 3 states and at least twice a year since Jinjer started touring the states back in 2018. This was an excellent collab though. Loved it!
Courtney LaPlante is the frontwoman for Spiritbox and I wanted to see them at Louder Than Life, cuz I live near where it's held every year, but I was out of town that weekend. I did go to the first day and saw The Warning, Fit For A King and Starset. During Fit For A King's set the frontman, Ryan Kirby, did a growl that lasts around 30 seconds at the end of the song Backbreaker and it sounds just like the studio version.
Please react to D-low winners compilation from the sbx kickback battle 2021 beatbox. He does alot of cool play with metronomes and what not, you would find it very interesting.
At first I was a bit put off by the growling, not that I mind growling, but I was fearful it was going to dominate the vocals. But her voice was quite nice. Really liked the tone of the drums but would have liked to heard some better fills. Overall a pretty cool song, much better than what I was expecting. I thought when both girls sang together the chord work was similar to a lot of pop songs, it's a popular sequence for many songs. Otherwise interesting!
I think what it really comes down to is Tatiana has continuously worked on her voice as an instrument. To hear her in earlier Jinjer she was less refined. With no vocal training whatsoever she is a natural talent yes, but her singing voice has changed just as much as her harsh vocals have as she's become more refined over time. If she ever gets a vocal coach she might become a singing great. She's noted occasionally that her harah vocals change almost album to album as she refines them, but also because she almost forgets how she's done them in the past. She's not a Harsh gymnast like the dude from Slaughter to Prevail. Her diction is what she concentrates on. And within that she has absolutely No peer. And the fact that she's found a way to go so low even though, physically her mouth isnt large enough to get stupid deep, its a wonder every time she gets down there. Especially live. Im like WTF every time. 😂

This performance and collab took me into Spiritbox. I really dig songs like cellar door and angel eyes.
For this song, most people prefer Courtney's one-take studio performance over the Official Music Video.
Thanks
