    Having worked at a Goodwill, I can tell you that not all are created equal. The biggest issue this deals with is often the price points, and even some of the items that make it to the shop floor, and all independently sticker price tags depend on the store manager. The store I worked at (I won't name locations or names for obvious reasons) had a manager that would frequently instruct the clerks to mark items at her discretion. Some days, items would be marked at retail price, or in some cases higher, while other days she would instruct that items ("hot ticket" ones) be shelved in the back "until further notice." I have seen this type of managerial behavior in some of the GWs in my surrounding area, and by the same token the complete opposite in others.
    My advice is to just be aware of the retail price of the item you're considering purchasing in Goodwill. If you know it to be a good deal, grab it, but don't assume that just because it is in a thrift store that it is automatically a good deal, financially speaking. Otherwise, everything Kathryn noted in this video is VERY accurate! Great video and great tips!

    When that Goodwill in Matthews opened - I tricked my husband who doesn't "do thrift stores" into checking it out with me. I pretended I didn't know what Goodwill was - he'd never been in one. He fell in love with the savings and now we too have found lots of really fun bargains there. Thanks for sharing.

    Awesome video! My Goodwill tip is as you shop and something catches your eye- grab it right away because it might not be there even a few minutes later! At the end of my shopping trip before checkout, I do an assessment of if I really need/want/love it then. Love your videos!

    We went to Goodwill on Saturday for 50% off and did very well. Not long ago I found a genuine Dooney & Burke that was brand new (or barely used) and got it for $20. Retail is upwards of $150. I have also found a real Coach bag and a Hampton Inn duvet cover for $12 which retails for $250. Goodwill shopping takes patience and time. I love the thrill of the hunt. My 17 year old daughter is a pro as well.

    I loved your video! I'm a new subscriber (as of today) :) I too love the Goodwill & pride myself on being a great bargain shopper. My Goodwill tip is that I find the most deals on a Sunday or Monday. People having Garage Sales tend to pack up the things that didn't sell and drop them off at the Goodwill, after they are sorted and priced they usual all make their way to the floor by Sunday or Monday. Just a little FYI

  • @shelbymorgan6004
    @shelbymorgan6004 9 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Sundays and Mondays are the BEST days, and mid morning time, gives workers time to put new stuff out, and it is not picked over through other customers. Its also good to go often and make friends with the workers, if you ask them to keep a eye out they normally will hold it in back! Btw I am IN LOVE with you channel! I am currently a full time mom student and work so budget budget budget is all I do!

    I get irritated in our store because of pickers. They come in and grab the best stuff leaving the crud for people who really need to shop there. I would also like to suggest searching for a Habitat for humanity Re-Store near you. I have found some great things in there. Places like country clubs donate almost new furniture when they redecorate. Last month our area store had five great sofas and fifty small table and chair sets, along with dozens of light fixtures and lamps donated from a golf club. Habitat is a great charity.

    • @SamoJeanne
      @SamoJeanne 9 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Hey the early bird gets the worm. If you don't want the pickers to grab all the good stuff before you then find out your goodwill's restock times and go then. (:

    • @IMChrysalis
      @IMChrysalis 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I love the Habitat Re-store... but they only opened it recently, and they don't carry a lot of the small stuff I go to Goodwill for. I didn't know such things as Goodwill Outlets existed but I found one in my area, where clothes, baskets and household items and so on are sold by the pound... all the things that didn't sell in the store. As someone who once was among the homeless, I have a sincere appreciation for Goodwill, especially that outlet. All luggage there was $1...nice. Then I finally found a place to get off the street.
      My bed was free, courtesy of my church, and at Goodwill I bought linens and a brand new white quilted summer bedspread for a little over $2, with the tags still on it. I bought some lovely and useful wooden bowls, a set of three for $2... all those kind of things. Occasionally the Outlet also has furniture: the camel-back loveseat that is in my living room now only cost me $2.17... yep, two dollars and tax, and about $4 for the fabric to slip-cover it. I'm on a fixed income and needed to furnish my apartment. This fit the bill, beautifully. The most expensive piece of furniture I bought there was a dining table and four chairs for $25. I have since replaced the table with a larger one, to entertain, but I'm still using the chairs, six years later. Kathryn is absolutely right, if you know what to look for you can find some amazing deals. But it does take time...

    Hi Kathryn, I love your videos & tips, housework has become my favorite new hobby because I can't wait to try out the ideas you give. The organizing tips are priceless, we live in a very small apartment and there's 4 of us. Keeping everything clean & organized is the only thing keeping my family from becoming cannibals. I have a couple great Goodwill tips. Large items like furniture are often dropped off on Saturday and they get checked in & put on the floor by Monday. So early in the week is a good time for those + they might mark things down that have been there too long to make room. Similar items don't always stay together so you might have to search. Also, if you're resourceful with tools, paint, or sewing, don't hesitate to ask for a mark-down on something damaged, broken or torn. You might be repurposing a nightstand and not care if the finish is damaged or the drawer pulls are gone. But the manager might knock a few bucks off if s/he thinks it might be the only way to move it.

    I do the same. The two Goodwills I shop at are in a University town. Great finds here, because people move in and out every semester and donate a lot of things they can't or don't want to take with them.
    I've found great signed prints of real collectible art work, all kinds of baby furniture, clothes, strollers (for my daughter and niece's kids), a set of very nice china, shelving, LOTS of organizing stuff, etc. I rarely have to buy new. I can make a list and peruse the GW store about twice a week and, if I need anything, I can usually find it within a few months. Why buy new, when you can recycle and save the earth and money!

    Two days ago I went to donate from decluttering and thought I would check out the store. I found a Vornado fan a little smaller than the one I paid over $100 for. The knob was broken so it was priced at $3.15. Tested in store and it works great! I emailed the fan company and they're mailing me a replacement knob for free! So amazing all around! I won't say where I live either. BUT GOODWILL here where I live we have 2 locations. They are horrible. They mark up items high. Like a Wal-Mart or target. They do keep the good things that the more wealthy people drop off for themselves. It's so obvious. Honestly, the managers and assistant Managers get the good things for themselves or someone else they know. And the drop actual junk off from their homes or their families homes to replace the inventory. They do hire Disabled people. It's just sad. My home state was hit very hard when the recession hit back in 08-2010. In between there. We have not recovered. Our jobs left. Men that have their degrees can't get a job that is their trade. They are told to go back to school and get another degree in another area. Just so they can have that piece of paper!!! We, as a state and my family struggle on a daily basis. But I love Kathryn and her videos and tips. I wish we had a habitat for humanity resale store here locally. Ours is about 2 hours away on a good day. God is great though, He is my foundation and my life. I lived your sign above the piano. ''AMAZING GRACE, HOW SWEET THE SOUND!'' IM GONNA MAKE ME A SIGN WITH THOSE WORDS ON IT. Garage sales are great places to find so nice things. Some flea markets. We have about 6 of those here (flea markets)....

    Don't discount the Clockwork Orange Framed Poster, they pull a good price on Ebay. Some of the weird stuff that you would never want, some people want it and that stuff has brought me some good money on Ebay. I like Goodwill, but the Goodwill here by me is expensive for a thrift store. Some of the no name thrifts here are better.

    I found really good china at value village. It has a gold border with a rose decor on it, and it was made in East Germany! We researched the manufacturer and as it turns out that this particular set is at least 20 years old! There is some wear on the gold border, but it is not that bad. It came with over 20 pieces. I only paid 40 for it with a 30% off coupon!

    I am a GW addict! Last year some of my highlights... a brand-new looking dresser for $19.99, a microwave for $6.99, $3.99 for a crockpot and lots of great exercises equipment…$39.99 for a Schwinn Airdyne bike! Total crap-shoot when shopping thrifty---some days I'm in and out in less than 15 minutes. I gather things up and then go sit in a corner by the books and think if I really need an item or see if it's something I could sell on ebay. I used to live in close proximity to three Goodwills and all were pretty good.

    DIOaD: I've been shopping at the Goodwill for over 40 yrs now...from when we were poor, military newly weds until now...when the kids are grown and out on their own and we have a grandkid to spend all of our money on! (Yeah. Right! LOL). I encourage our grandson to read, read, read...and with that in mind, I buy a lot of his books at the GW. The book you discarded because some other kid had colored on it? If there were only a few pages messed up, then I would've bought the book, brought it home, and tried to remove the color marks with a paper towel and window cleaner. Or whatever else is under the sink. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. If it doesn't, then into my donation pile it goes. However, I've been able to salvage books with a little cleaner and elbow grease many, many times. Another tip: you don't know if the kid was snotty-nosed or not...so each and EVERY book goes through a complete cleaning with hot water and Dawn before I allow H-man to even touch his new book(s). Yes, I've declared war against cooties -- it's just the way I am (a little OCD, are we???). I just wanted to pass on this little tip -- if it's an expensive book, the it's worth the time and effort to try to save it for your child! See y'all at the Goodwill! ;-D

    Have you ever been to the Bins in Seattle? (Its official name is the Goodwill Outlet Store, but nearly everyone calls it "the Bins" because everything comes into the sales area in huge plastic bins.) It's the last stop for items that didn't sell at other Goodwill stores in the area, and everything is ubercheap. You literally have to do some digging, but we've found amazing stuff at the Bins.

I tried CL and Offer Up with zero luck. I ended up giving them away as gifts to friends, which was nice but not my original plan, lol. I love thrift store shopping. I have a GW in my hometown and can find some great deals some times, but there is another store about an hour and a half away from me that I absolutely love! Whenever we are in that town, I ask my husband to take me. We find the most amazing things for DIRT CHEAP prices! I love it!! But since the one in my hometown is on the pricier side, I tend to shop more at a Catholic store which has some amazing items for pennies on the dollar! You are absolutely right, though, it is definitely all about taking time to really look for great deals, know retail value to compare prices, and be willing to overlook a little "yuck" to make an amazing find! :) Love your videos!!!!

    Sadly, I have a ritzier goodwill and it is horrible. The prices you are getting are amazing, our Goodwill is INCREDIBLY overpriced, a lot of the items there you can go across the mall into Target and find for the same price, new. That cup you got would not have gone for less than $3.99. Baskets are $7.99 and up. Frames are $5 and up. No furniture is less than $20, no matter how beat up it is. I am jealous of the 99 cent rack for clothes, we do not have that, they just say, for example, Wednesday is blue tag day and those items with blue tags are 25% off. :(

    With a keen eye you're able to score items which the person in charge for pricing has overlooked (or doesn't know). These are the true great finds in Goodwill.

    My favorite Goodwill haul was when I didn't have much but desperately needed a winter coat. I am a hard person to fit, having broader shoulders and more muscular arms than most women my size... and one day I spotted a beautiful full length leather coat, which was pricemarked for $9.99, and it actually did fit! The other jackets were marked a lot higher and I mentioned it to the cashier. She agreed it was unusual, and said that sometimes there are misprints on the tags, but that's why they use the tags that are punched into the fabric. People can't swap them, and they had to sell the item for the price marked. When I got the coat home, I looked up the label and the item... it was a TWELVE HUNDRED DOLLAR COAT! And this as in the poorer section of town... Donations come from trucks all over the city, and if you know what quality looks like, you can find it anywhere, it just takes time and patience... and perseverance.

    I've been thrift shopping for decades, virtually from cost to coast and yeah they are pretty much the same. I have to say that when in Wisconsin I was a Goodwill that had brand new merchandise like you mention in the video but I've never seen that in southern California where I live - bummer. Absolutely, I always have a list with me for thrift store shopping and update it regularly. Wowzers - your Goodwill is organized and labeled and amazing. Mine has stuff precariously placed on top of other things like pots and ceramic plates piled up so you are taking a chance moving them, it's a lot more work. Who would by that? I'm an artist and paint over children's board books with acrylic paints. As a mixed media artist my collection of unique funky things for texture impressing in my paints is the envy of my artist friends. LOL! I always buy good quality wood panel plaques and canvas art to paint over. Plates - I have some hanging on the wall,for a pop of color!

    The Goodwill stores here usually do not put out holiday items right after they are donated. They hold them till the next year's holiday and put them out before the next holiday then after they might discount them if that color of tag is on sale for the week.

    ok i am only 2minutes in & wow your goodwill IS better than the 17 I've been in. # 1- I go in a goodwill whenever i see one just to see if they have ant furniture- your store looks filled with furniture. # 2- Also a lot of Goodwill stores really overprice the stuff they get from target coming in way above clearance prices. So, if your Goodwill prices there "new" inventory well that IS awesome because a lot of the don't. # 3- i think one of the best uses of thrift stores is " i need a pink shirt" especially if you need a current season shirt when most retail stores have out coming season clothing. My best haul was swim shorts for my nephew (he needed 5) in the middle of swim season. I'll finish watching now for your tips because with my Goodwill completely doing away with returns or exchanges & their percent off days, I can use some tips. Thanks

    I just scored some good stuff from my goodwill today. I got hiking boots, a trendy blue purse, matching pumps, and a pair of sterling silver hoop earrings. I've bean looking for a good pair of hoops for a while too. $1.49 brand new!
    I have also learned that if the garment is more than an inch too big not to get it: unless you're a wiz at the sewing machine.

    Shop early in the week. Mondays seem to have the best selection at my Goodwill. I have scored some awesome finds including $120 jeans for $8, and many brand new items such as Threshold shelves from Target still on the box. Some of the more affluent Goodwills in my area seem to have cheaper stuff so I like the Goidwills in the newer areas if town best.

    This is good, I work at Good Will and it's true that you need to be careful about pricing. The one I work at is run different, it's not for everyone. But I love the store and people who i call regulars. My advice following people who are regulars is the best way to find the best buys. It's a hit or miss depending on what day you shop.

    Fab vid with excellent tips. I love to pop in, never know what I'll find. Last month I got a fab little bookshelf for $8, perfect for storing my craft stuff, and yesterday I got two bedside tables, for $6 each. I missed out on identical ones in an eBay auction that sold for $30! TFS

    Always look through the new good items, they are the most common everyday necessities. All goodwill stores have sales like the nifty buck fifty sale, make sure to go to goodwill the last Tuesday of the month. My store on Monday has a sale of 15% off for active military members with ID.

    I have been shopping at Goodwill since my chldren were babies and they are in their fifties now so I consier myself a veteran. My favorite Goodwill shopping is at the outlet stores. They sell by the pound, comes out on large tables and you have to really scramble but the finds are there. I have found antiques, lots of great books (which are priced) furniture dirt cheap, lots of clothes for the whole family and it goes on.

    I found this really pretty small jewelry box with a carousel horse tile on top for $1.99..
    It was still in great condition, but the inside was lined with this sort of felt material which was covered in fuzzies..
    But it was easy to just take a rolled piece of tape and use it like a lint roller. I think it's my favourite non-clothing item I've ever found c:

    I rememberf I once found a very pretty stainless steel or some kind of metal tray, large, oval, with handles & some carving for $6. ( bought it to place on top of my large microwave which sits on mu buffet. I have corralled ALL the tea & coffee supplies, the press, the brewer, flavors, stevia, with the spoons & cups in the drawer right under it. Beside the microwave, I got 2 trays & a stand, I believe for 5 bucks total, from Daiso, & that holds the little containers of the condiments WE use at home & small containers of the snacks we sometimes munch on wit some tea or coffee. Even the visitors can't miss anything... my grand children too were pretty independent as even the 6 year ols was able to pour out a cup of milk & warm it in the microwave all by herself... didn't need any help at all.

    Last week I went into Good will in the next town over, and its not in a rich neighborhood or county even, BUT I love that one ( I have several I shop at ) I bought 2 matching Bath and Body works soap dispensers or what ever they are called for 0.49 Cent's each! no joke, Then I got home to discover they matched the 3 wick candle holders my husband bought me 2 years ago for my Birthday or Christmas ( Both is in December 3 weeks apart so I forget which it was for, often he buys me stuff for both ) I got a Michael Kors dress, a Maggie London dress and a Express Blouse at this one with tags still on, I gave less than $10.00 for all 3 items!
    The one in Cookeville I shop at I often find things with tags still on them from Target, Cookeville doesn't have a Target, but they get a lot of new items from there!
    Then the one at Manchester that I shop at always has Pottery Barn items still in the box and its like $1.99 or $2.99 for those items, never over $2.99 and the prices on the boxes are WAY more than $30.00! I love Good Will, and most any thrift store.
    Last week I got a discount card thing, you get points for ever so much you spend, then you get 500 points for just getting the rewards card, does your Good Will have that ? I'm not sure how it works as they really didn't explain it to me ? If you know Please share the details with me LOL.
    Thanks for Sharing! XOXO Denise

    I don't get to shop at Goodwill very often because I'm often out of work and there are none in my town, but in the past, I have bought so many cute outfits from there. There is one in three different neighboring towns where it's about a 40 mile and 55 minute drive to them but it's worth it. If I'm going to drive that far to shop Goodwill, I just make a day of it and really go through the racks and shelves and wait around for the new stuff to come out through out the day. I always eat breakfast before I leave the house and usually after about 4 or 5 hours I leave and go eat lunch and go back for at least a couple more hours.

    Great tips! I would also recommend bringing some hand sanitizer and even a small pack of baby wipes. Things can be gross. When buying board games or games with parts I cheat and use my car keys to open the taped up box and make sure all the parts are there. I have before got home and not all the parts were in the box. So always good to check.

    • @IMChrysalis
      @IMChrysalis 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I actually ask the cashier or worker at the store to open the boxes. If they don't check to see if all the parts are there, I don't check to see if I have change to buy it!

    Love your videos & tips so much. My Goodwill has a clearance section. Found many awesome things there. Every week they do the color of the week that is 50% off. They also do clearance of housewares, decor items etc, usually those items were the 50% off color the week before & I've found at least at my store anyway, that if you're brave enough to ask, the employees will usually tell you the next weeks color/50% off if you just ask. They also do 50% off storewide i think every month for one day only. If its not once a month, its every couple of months. Hope this helps someone get some awesome deals!! Love my Goodwill!!!

    I found a 2 foot angel that was made out of very heavy marble. I paid $20.00 for it. I'm pretty sure that it would have cost at least 80 or 90 dollars else where. And it was in perfect condition. And they have Build a Bear bears there. Some of them are in pretty rough shape, but they do have a few (if you want to dig & look for them) that are in excellent shape. If you buy a Build a Bear at a Built a Bear work shop, your going to pay at least $30.00 for just a basic bear without clothing or anything. Last Christmas I found a reindeer that had an adorable ruffly & cute dress with a matching hat on it. I am not kidding when I say that it looked like it just walked out of the Build a Bear work shop. I paid only $2.49 for it at Goodwill!!

    you won't find stuff for those prices at my Good Will, the elephant, and cheese plate, would have cost you about $30.00 if not more :(.......... they are going on eBay and seeing what their stuff is selling for, and pricing it according to eBay and Amazon.

    Great ideas! Thrift buying tips learned the hard way: Take a tape measure or pre-measure so you know what size basket, table, tray etc. fits in your space. It could be too tall or an inch too deep. Do I really need it? Does it fit my style? Do I think it's just too cute to leave behind? Also, take care with the re-appearance of bed bugs in the U.S.we've been warned locally about buying used furniture. Make sure that you examine upholstered items.

    I always have a list too! Who would buy them (Kate Gosselin book)? Artists. As an artist I have bought lots of books at the GW to alter meaning, paint in them, do smaller painting of a larger work I want to do, paint samples, tear out the pages and glue to canvas for backgrounds etc. As an artist I'm always looking for the "Junk" stuff to make impressions in paint or use as a stamp. Mixed media artists and fabric painters love the GW. I rarely use stuff I buy from there for the purpose for which it was created. LOL

    I generally prefer shopping at goodwill to buying new.
    I try to live zerowaste so it benefits me to shop there but also I like customizing things for my spaces. It's more fun to buy something that's maybe not exactly my taste and then getting creative with paint or whatever.

I found a great art piece for 6 dollars only to find out it was worth over $500 + I love the hunt it feels great to get designer clothes for almost nothing. It's like your getting over the high cost of retailers that are so over priced to begin with. Happy shopping everyone.
