I love thrifting, but I have to say, Goodwill has really jacked up their prices to where I can find a better price on the clearance rack (for NEW clothes or home decor) at the retail store! It's sad, because it affects those customers that can only afford to shop at GW.

Patricia Kuadey I drove by the street I lived in as a kid. There used to be a goodwill store but now it's a DD's. Walked in just for kicks and found 2pc skirt shirt and romper for my niece 1.49!!! New. I remember going to goodwill last week for travel decor super pricey. So looked in kids section for fun clothing is $3.99 same as garamimals at Walmart. As for travel decor I hit Hobby Lobby clearance found new items for less.

I do shop at Good Will BUT they have gotten ridiculously expensive where I live and they do not give back to the poor. It is a private business. Some of the prices are higher than something new. I agree completely. Although the goodwill I work for does the round up program for some local food banks a few months out of the year, they could treat there employees better. My assistant manager doesn’t even make $11hr and can barley afford a roof over her family’s head and it’s sad, especially because the CEO makes so much.

Except the Salvation Army is a Christian thing and advocates against gay people and things like planned parenthood. Goodwill does actually do a lot for the community, there is currently hundreds of programs in place that help people in need. I do agree with you that they don’t treat employees the greatest and could give them much better wages, though. I also worked at a goodwill for 2.5 years, btw.

As a lot of other people have stated, it is important to do your research before shopping at a store that claims to give back. Most Goodwills are FOR PROFIT and many have been under investigation for business practices & handling of money. Also, don’t get it twisted when it comes to a Goodwill Outlet. For the most part, these are not cheery places with friendly shoppers. These are people looking for the best brands for the best deal. It can be cutthroat. You have to wait behind a line while they change out the bins & wait for a bell or a go to start searching the new ones. People will run, push, do whatever to get to the bin first. And don’t be surprised if you find a bin completely full of wet clothing, sometimes it’s urine. However, not all outlets may be like this but the ones I have been to are. In the end though my finds outweighed the nastiness. Definitely take a pair of gloves with you!

Goodwill has skyrocketed in price. I can get brand new onesies at Walmart for the same price as a used one ($2.00-ish). And that's the carters brand. Goodwill also is notorious for profiting off of people's junk. I still shop there myself but I am not fooled into thinking my money is helping anyone. The CEO profits 2.3 million a year, while they are only paying some of their employees pennies on the dollar because legally they can. They exploit the special needs community.

Goodwill in Canada is very overpriced and definitely does not give back 90% to the community. I have found that going to small local thrift shops or the salvation army saves you way more, they give back almost all profits to the town/city and you find amazing deals. I work in a very large Canadian clothing store with hundreds of locations and we regularly have better deals than goodwill and for brand new clothes not used. The most important thing to save money is something you mention in the video and that is to take your time. Also checking back often helps. You usually find what you need when you aren't looking for it.

I used to work at goodwill (I quit due to abusive management, not worth the minimum wage no benefits)
    My advice;
    Learn the system!
Every goodwill has discount days, special discounts you can get (student, teacher, veteran, seniors), seniors often have their own discount day!
The color tags (at least this is how it works at my store) change every week, pay attention to color tag of the week and any specials connected (1 dollar day on color tag of week? Yep)
In doubt? Ask an employee. The employees know how you can save and want you to get the better deal.
I’ve had customers walk up with a huge cart of items and walk out paying way less than 15.00 on clothes, electronics, decor items, dvds, books, etc.

Do not, I repeat do not buy from good will. 3 yrs ago my hometown community suffered a massive fire which left 19 families homeless. Everyone in the community started dropping off things to good will for the families. But it all left town to another destination and they charged the families for items that were meant for them at no cost from the community. We found out money goes into some rich guys pocket who opens this conglomerate. They do not donate anything back to the community. Nor did they give those poor families who lost all of their belongings. What losers good will is.

I totally agree. That CEO makes most of the money. He does not buy anything. It is the people that take ALL there stuff to GW for free. And here in the last few month, EVERY SINGLE TIME I go into the store, and when I pay for my products. They KEEP asking for donation. I am tired they keep begging for money. They already getting everything for FREE as it is, WHY beg for more money, that we know, that most of that money goes into the big shots pocket book. Many years ago, I ask for help. And when I got there, I can not believe what they offered me. I needed furniture. They were so filthy, I would not even let my dog sleep on it. And I was told by the manager, that they to not clean or wash anything that comes into the store. So soon people bring it in and it is sorted through. They take it out to the floor. With them not cleaning nor washing anything. We could bring home, fleas, bed bugs or even lice and who knows what else?. Every time I go there, my hands get so dirty. Those places are nasty. I wonder why there is nothing that can be done about this, that GW should clean and wash the items before they sale them. I have seen other thrift-store, that wash and clean the items before they put them into the store. And on top of that, GW prices have become way to HIGH for reselling all the free stuff they are being given at. I have found new items in other main stores, for allot cheaper then GW.

Yes, an employee that was elsewhere stated more than 60% goes to wages and that probably covers all employees in the stores, the teachers in classes that do training programs, all administrators and Mr. CEO.
There is no way possible that they could clean everything before putting it out. They receive way too much. I agree, their prices are getting higher. Now as she says you can get clothes dirt cheap in the outlet but you have to take the time to look and check everything over. Those weight prices have also gone up.

I work at a private Christian school so my kids can attend with the discount, but I have given up a salary that was double and a pension for social insecurity therefore, I must thrift shop. Great ideas and thanks for not always taking out the “mess” of your videos...it is nice to watch a video of someone who you know keeps an immaculate home, yet has kids and lives in it too! I don’t go away so depressed when people can be real in their videos. I respect you so much more as well! Thanks for great videos and ideas!💕

Our Goodwill used to be good but now they only have overpriced junk. They sell some Target surplus and price it higher than Target did. I love hunting for bargains! I could shop all day scouting for deals. There is a similar goodwill outlet near us where you purchase by the pound. Like you said, it takes a lot of digging. I have never found new with tags clothes at the outlets, only the traditional goodwills. I have found some decent bargains there, though. Just takes time...but so worth it to leave with an enormous bag of name brand clothes for less than 10 bucks🤗

I always read through the comments as I listen to you. I agree that GW in some areas are kind of rip off for being used. The nicer stuff that is donated by stores is near original retail price being that I never pay retail it's heartbreaking that some people in need shop there and are gauged. Your store is really clean and you are very lucky to find great deals on new items. Wish it was the same all around

I am sorry to burst your bubble but Goodwill is not as great as you think. They do not take care of their employees at all. They are way under paid for everything they have to do. Then when they let people go for the wrong reasons, they put on your reasons for getting let go 1- don't follow rules, 2- missed to many days, 3- don't get along well with others. I know 5 people that have not been able to get another job since they worked at goodwill, it's been up to 8 years since they worked there. So I am sorry to tell you that they lie about taking care of there employees. Oh and that whole thing about they put 80% back to the community is bs, it's more like 25%.

I don't know what Goodwill they worked at but it's extremely hard to be fired here at the one I work at. You've got to literally be fuck up of the year to be let go here. I've got a coworker who been late every single day since he started working here. One coworker threatened me and all she got was a write up. She quit a week later.
We get paid well above minimum wage here and they do help the community alot and have a boatload of programs here to assist us workers. They pay us to go to the doctors, if you're full time you can ask for a $500 loan and they will give it to you no questions asked. With your managers approval you can take classes that Goodwill pays for to help get certifications. One of my coworkers got their forklift license for free. It just depends on where your at. The politics of the job is hella annoying but I wouldn't give my job up for nobody. This is the best one I've had since I got in the workforce 15 years ago

THANK YOU for talking about all of the “good” in goodwill as well as some of the different types of stores! It breaks my heart when people talk about an organization without knowing all the facts or generalize when every area goodwill has unique management styles and leaders, which inevitably make some run more smoothly than others. Jenny Borter GW was actually under investigation in our state and ended up in a bunch of trouble. They had to make a bunch of changes because they were running for profit. They had to change basically a huge amount of their management positions and administrators as well as business practices and policies to maintain selling here. Our Governor wasn't having their deception! So yes some of them are up to some shady business practices.

They charge too much considering everything is donated. So, they pay nothing for there product. We have a H.A.L.O thrift store which is super cheap and, they use the money for the homeless shelter and soup kitchen. Adult clothes 2-3 bucks. Our gw charges 10 for jeans.

    • @kristinestocker

I used to work at Goodwill. Each GW is locally operated and they are separate legal entities. The state I live in has four GWs that I know of. They are completely independent of each other.
Hiring practices, salary, benefits, etc are managed locally. The GW where I worked had 50+ stores and 10+ career centers. Everyone made more than the state and federal minimum wages.
Management are paid a competitive salary. They are employees not volunteers. GW is not all under one big umbrella.

Their executives also have high salaries, and the employees have extremely low ones...and from what I was told, if you're "disabled" and hired, your salary can actually be under minimum wage...there are also a number of other "nasty surprises" that you can dig up if you're willing to do the research. We actually kick people off the line if they grab before we lock the wheels down. Clothes and Wares is pretty tame for us. It's the shoe line that's usually bad with the shoving and snatching. We now put sheets on top the shoes so the customers can't see what's in it so there's less squabbling when we lock the wheels down

Wow !!! I'm in Canada and we have nothing like a boutique Goodwill or a store with bins to pick from. I'd have to wear ear plugs in there because of the noise level and I hope there is no fighting for anything, but I would totally love both. Hope they all get here soon so I can have FUN !!! Thanks for the tips girl ♥️

Thrifting is great for the environment and minimising waste - both buying and donating to thrift stores! But maybe next time you go, you could take your own reusable bags? Getting plastic bags every time you shop is pretty bad for the environment as they’ll all end up in landfill and take years to break down! You could personally save over 300 plastic bags just by using reusable bags for just ONE year!

Goodwill outlet is what happeneds when Goodwill pulls there half off color during the color that's half off that's why you can barely find it in the store when it's that color during the week. They pull it and send it to the outlet stores. What's not sold at the outlet gets sold to foriegn countries in bulk and it ends up in there landfills I know I worked at Goodwill..many Goodwill's don't have reward programs very few do and very few places have the GW boutiques ..only big cities have it..the organizations they support don't generally support your local community but communities outside of yours that are smaller with job search abilities sadly once they help them find a job that's where it ends they just don't tell em that and many don't know that so it's waisted.. it doesn't go into helping with things really needed like actual local job service skills building or homeless issues or helping to clothe homeless for job search or battered woman and so on..Goodwill is about helping themselves

    • @SarahGreen523
      @SarahGreen523 5 ปีที่แล้ว

In our area they built themselves a lovely, large new corporate headquarters building. The next year they told management that the cost of that building was pulling them down and it was time to raise the prices on the merchandise to help offset the costs of building that nice huge air conditioned building for all the corporate fat cats to sit in all day. So much for non profit. Also, they have this new store in a smallish outlying town that they just built and the keep harping on making that store 'a million dollar store'. That doesn't sound like non profit to me. Their community service is all bout helping their clients, not the actual community their stores are in. So no, nothing goes back to the community. The employment services they offer regular folks is exactly the same as the state does for free. They kick the homeless people out of the store when they linger due to freezing temperatures. I had a homeless kid ask me for a coat once and my manager said it was stealing if I gave him one. It was also stealing if I gave him money to buy one. It was also stealing if I bought it for him. GW doesn't give a shit about the homeless or the down trodden folks in the community.

I think it would be AWESOME if you did thrifting videos once a month or for back to school and showed awesome clothing (i.e. expensive clothing, high end brands, quality brands, etc). I love seeing those sort of videos. I had crappy luck with clothing at my goodwill/thrift stores but good luck with home decor/home type of stuff. YOUR MY FAVORITE! LOVE YOUR VIDEOS AND YOU AS A PERSON!! XOXO-DELIA

I go to Goodwill and a place called ARC in Colorado for art, home furnishings like accessories, and surprisingly often find cool things that are reasonably priced. I shopped ARC for daughter's athletic clothing and saved a ton of money. I don't always score but when I do it's a great feeling.

Yes there are some good deals but alot of that stuff at that GW store you can get brand new for the same price or just a few dollars more so paying extra for used clothing doesn't make sense. If a pair of workout pants are $8 at one of those stores, i can get at walmart at about the same or even cheaper when they have clearance sales. Goodwill is actually getting more pricier in my town for old used clothes, doesn't make much sense when it gets too expensive at a thrift store!

Great finds! I work part time at a thrift store; I do know almost all of them welcome volunteer's; than you get first dibs on treasures; it's hard work, not the cleanliest; but I guarantee you will find treasures every day! I myself don't bring home hardly anything; as I'm trying to downsize, waiting for retirement! Thanks for you info!

I don't even bother looking at clothes in Goodwill anymore because the prices are MUCH too high. I also donate to a "local" thrift shop established and operated by a number of churches in my area to help my LOCAL community because I hate that GW charges so much, even for kids' clothing. I see women in them with a couple of kids, obviously buying school clothes in the fall (especially),, and I can tell they're struggling, financially. Yet GW clothing racks are STUFFED with clothes because no one can afford them. Will mention that at Goodwills in my area, they have 30% off on Wednesdays for seniors (I'm one) and on Fridays, the same for US veterans (which i also am). I shop at GW only to look for towels and twin comforters because I work in cat rescue and use lots of them. Twin comforters are $10 and with my discount, I can get them for $7.

Goodwill very very overpriced! They do not put 90% back into community. Look up their stats on line for charities. Very poorly rated. Look at CEO SALARY. Crazy. They have gotten too greedy on pricing. Especially since they get stuff for free. I go to Goodwill but less and less. Bin prices vary great by area, State, etc. Also quality time f goods vary greatly by area. Just some things to think about.

That's right, I don't shop there anymore. Went to one store and founded this beautiful chair, a little big for my house, $8. Went to the next one, few miles away, the other pair was there for $35. Started to compare the way they are pricing things, even tho I know they pay for rent and employees, still don't look right.

When I lived in Oregon there was a wonderful Goodwill outlet near me. I really miss it. Even the regular goodwills in my area now are really lacking compared to Oregon. I think people there just gave better stuff.
At least back then (it has been more than 10 years now) once you hit a certain weight load, the price per pound went down. I bought loads of suede and leather jackets & even purses in lots of colors - mostly people getting rid of a lot of '80s stuff back then. It was a great way to get lots of suede and leather for small craft ideas.
Also at these great prices, you can buy clothes just to get the buttons or trims on them to use on sewing projects. Or for people that knit or crochet - unravel sweaters for the yarn!
