  • Elden Ring is the latest game from From Software, the creators of Dark Souls. Elden Ring has been getting rave reviews and already is being hailed as one of the greatest games ever made. Does the game reach those heights for me?

I concur with you on the repetitiveness, it feels easier with all the summons to make it more mainstream, but of all the Eldenkiroulsborne (you hear it first here) my fav is also Bloodborne

A lot of that is in the game, but, in true FromSoft fashion, it's all hidden.
Talk to every NPC, read every item description, explore every nook and cranny, and you'll get your lore.
FromSoft has some of the deepest and most interesting lore out there, it's just not centralized in any way.

  • @wreckyoualways

i hear your complaint... the only issue is that option is kinda available to you. If you want to just streamline the main story, u can. u just have to be good enough and use a guide. Im a noob and it was getting to the point where i was like "everywhere i turn is a boss" and that was getting to be overwhelming but then i learned a bunch a didnt know. like lore in item descriptions, ashes of war affecting the attribute scaling on weapons and went to my chest to see what items i had that could maximize my dmg. now i just get on to kill a boss or clear an area and take it a lil at a time instead of the 10 hour stints i was doin

GRRM came up with all of the backstory for the gods, demi gods, erd tree and such. With the big war, the shattering and all that included. It was then essentially Dark Souls'afied by Fromsoft. You can clearly tell what is and isn't a Fromsoft character, most NPC's are Fromsoft, while most main bosses are all GRRM's work but it's very much a good mash up of ideas put into one game.

That's very weird that you've had so much of the psn connection errors, I've played about 130 hours on my ps5 and haven't had that happen even once, and my internet is even usually pretty shaky, so maybe your connection was just a bit unusually wonky? Either way i definitely agree that there should be some way for the game to continue in offline mode and not just boot you out of the game.
As for the game itself, I'm definitely in the camp that regards it as a contender for best game ever made. It's in competition with Bloodborne as my favorite game of all time. I pretty much agree with all your positives. I highly disagree with your criticism of the graphics. The graphics aren't the most incredible graphics in gaming history but they're still incredible, there is nothing bad about them in my opinion. I've also always been one that thinks graphics should never be considered a negative just because there are better graphics, only if there is actually anything specifically "bad" about them. And I understand your desire for a quest log of some sort. I'm fine with there not being one as I'm not prejudiced against notebooks like you and several commenters 😂 (I officially petition for a Notebooks Rights Act of 2022, they did nothing wrong!) Joking aside, I personally like writing stuff down in a notebook because it gives me a sense of involvement in the story, but I definitely understand the paper haters' distaste of the idea.

The type of story that Elden RIng and previous From Soft games have doesnt require a quest log, they arent really quests to begin with and definitely not the type that something like Skyrim has.
You are basically dropped into this game as a character you dont know anything about and try to explore this vast and mysterious world.
The fact that you just stumble onto these NPCs during your journey enhances that mystical vibe and it also makes it a bit more realistic at the same time.
And in the end none of these quests are mandatory but they add extra flavor to the entire world building; and ultimately, if the player likes the narrative that these characters pose, he can choose to go out of his way to try and progress through that very narrative.
For a big portion of these quests you are literally told where you have to go and what item to collect and what person you need to kill, on the other hand there are other parts of these quest where you need to figure things out for yourself or explore enough so that you stumble onto the next part......and i never got the reason why that is a problem, most games are so basic and boring with how they just tell players exactly what to do, there really isnt that much that is left up to the player in terms of actual thinking or choice.
And really, if you are too lazy to try and figure these things out for yourself then just google where you need to go next, i mean thats what you wanted right? a quest log

If you don't intend it to sound insulting or condescending, don't throw out words like lazy and refer to people's opinion with "even if it had validity."

@@CLGameChamber If i was trying to get at you, "Typical fanboy" is probably the worst reply i could think of.
But i digress, the point of the matter is ive seen this argument presented multiple times and never was there given any justification to it other then well i feel like it...
Everything else in the game is based around you exploring and trying to figure out things for yourself, heck even the weapon upgrades function like that. The NPCs, as well as the entire narrative of the game would be different if you had "this guy told me this", "he said go here", "kill that". The game is completely opposite of being straightforward in its entire ideology, in the hopes of making it more mysterious and more fantasy like.......what you are suggesting would be a complete deviation from that.

@@CLGameChamber It's not about the ratings for me. It's that many of your opinions are based on false facts. Being a high quality graphics game was never a thing from Fromsoftware, it's not even on their goals. It's like judging a Mario Game for not being realistic. You said the game is alot of the same, and it will be if you stick to one weapon, one playstyle, one route and overall one way of dealing with things. That's why the game gives you a ton of options of how and when to deal with stuff, if you even want to do it (which brings me to another point) you said the game "forces" you to do alot of things in order to progress. You can skip easily 80% of the game, if not more, to complete the main story. There a total of 10 Great runes if i am not wrong, 6 main ones and 4 minor ones. The game only asks you for 2 in order to get to the late game. That's how permissive it gets.

Saying that From Software doesn't bother themselves with high quality graphics does not negate the fact that they aren't high quality graphics. I have played all of the fromsoftware Souls games and finished most of them, and Dark Souls 3 is still my favorite even though it is a pretty unpopular opinion. I do believe that with what bloodborne and DS3 did, it was the perfect formula for that type of game, and I just wished they would just keep perfecting that. I feel that elden ring kinda loses the spirit of what made those games so great. I really think that the somewhat linear but explorable environment of the early games was perfectly feeting and was what defined those games. Not all games have to be gigantic and open world and especially not dark souls, in my opinion.

100% agree this game needs a character/quest/lore log. Fromsoft actually had a chance to completely redefine how that functions in the modern era and i think they could do something spectacular

I’m one of the few people who liked it but thinks that is way too overrated being hailed as the greatest video game of all times... it’s a 8/10 for me

Idk man for me a lot of "open world" games just bore me easily but holy Elden Ring, I'm still hooked on it after 100+ hours. Haven't gotten tired one bit 🤣 the only other open world game that didn't bore me over time was Horizon Zero Dawn. Then again I'm a Souls veteran and have beaten them all 15+ times haha
      I'd give this ish a 9.5/10
Up there with BOTW for me! To each their own though😁

@@forgotmyrealname11 nothing in specific. To get a 10/10 from me means I need to see it as a perfect game, which I don’t. The map is too big and really doesn’t need to be. Some of the bosses are re skinned, some areas are unnecessary and the NPC’s are really disappointing. I’m also not the biggest fan of the graphics!
