The name Bobby Fischer, at least to Americans, is synonymous with chess. A prodigy in the 50s, a world class player in the 60s, the 70s saw Fischer at his pinnacle. He earned the right to challenge Boris Spassky in a title run without comparison, defeating Mark Taimanov and Bent Larsen with perfect scores of 6-0, and ex-champion Petrosian 6½-2½. Now the stage was set, and the only thing standing between Fischer and Spassky was Fischer himself.
The match was mired in political overtones, during the height of the Cold War. The Soviet chess system had a monopoly on the title since 1948, and the expectations on Spassky were enormous. While Fischer studied chess virtually in seclusion, Spassky had the full resources of the USSR. Victor Baturinsky, head of Soviet Chess Sports Committee, said: "Basically, the Soviet leadership and the powers that be in sport, were interested in just one issue: how to stop Fischer from becoming World Champion.
With the match set to begin in Reykjavik, Iceland, Fischer (who had not signed any documents confirming his participation) began to make a number of demands, including a percentage of television rights, a larger prize fund, and all manner of conditions covering everything from the lighting to the chair cushions. To satisfy Bobby's demands of a larger prize fund, British chess promoter James Slater donated a dazzling $125,000 to be added to the prize fund. Fischer still needed more convincing by Bill Lombardy (Fischer's last-minute choice as second), and one famously persuasive telephone call from Henry Kissinger. Mere hours before he would be forfeited, Fischer arrived in Iceland.

This match had a lot of opportunities for “captures captures captures captures,” but Agad declines these and goes for the more proper “piece’s name captures, piece’s name captures, piece’s name captures.”

I’m old enough to remember this tournament as it happened. Despite Fischer’s inexcusable behaviour, he had great respect for Spassky. There’s a famous quote made long before this match, where Fischer said his favorite moment in a game is when his opponent’s “ego is crushed”. After the match a reporter recalled that quote and asked if he ever felt Spassky’s ego was crushed and Fischer said ‘no’. What also should be remembered when criticizing Fischer is he arranged the 1992 rematch with Spassky, which despite his losing Spassky made over $1.6 million which was huge for the day. Give Fischer some credit for that.
He Also said of all the Soviet GM's,indeed of all those he played Spassky was the strongest because he never folded.
For all his flaws,the Chess world benefited enormously from Fischer's contribution.

The difference in personality is much too great, Karpov is what you would call a gentleman. Kaspy on the other hand has a bit of a trashy attitude.

It's not even a two-fold repetition, actually. The position almost identical to the final one had appeared twice (12:42 and 12:51) but it was Black to move and in the final position it was White to move which makes it the first time this position was on the board in this game.
My mom doesn't know about chess but she love to see your dog in the videos. She say "the dog is the star of the show".

It IS a three fold repetition ... it's not about repeating the moves three times, it's about the same position appearing 3 times on the board ...

The position at these moments seems to be same as the final position but it's Black to move in these and it's White to move in the final position. Hence not a repetition, not even a twofold, actually.

I bought Pawn Sacrifice on Blu Ray because of this coverage of the match. This blows the movie out of the water. Casting of Spassky was spot on, but Tobey ruins the entire movie for me. Not to mention they tried to frame Fischer as insane the whole time because he spoke truth.

Gaurav Malhotra Fischer wanted to change the match format to something closer as it’s played today. The first Karpov-Kasparov match was a resounding failure. There are still many different opinions on the Candidates and World Championship formats. Imagine if this Candidate’s cycle were the same as fifty years ago. Caruana winning the round robin format would only mean that he was one of eight to continue in match play. Fischer won the round robin, quarter-final, semi-final and final candidates match. Then he needed 12.5 to win WC while Spassky only needed 12 to retain WC title. Whether playing all of the extra games made Fischer stronger, it might have worn out a different player. Never will the WC have such a great advantage now or in the future.
Water Bottle No, the WC needed only 12 points to retain the title while the challenger needed 12.5 points to take it away. Off the top of my head, another thing about WC matches dating back a hundred years but gone 1972. The challenger had to secure the funding for the prize pool. The challenger always had to secure.5 more than the WC regardless of the total point total of the match. I believe even the first Karpov-Kasparov match required that. When that changed is probably easily found. The only advantage the challenger got for securing the funding was the choice of location for the match.
