I watched a video of a lecture years ago about this problem and I learned something that never left me. He talked about watercolor paints and color printers and the colors of ink they use. You'd think it would be yellow blue and red right? NOPE!! It Yellow Magenta and Cyan. WHAT!!!?? I'd changed my ink cartridges a million times but never thought about the colors I was putting in the silly thing. But sure enough the answer to my watercolor problem was sitting there inside my printer!!
Susan M , that's why when working on a computer or tablet (which is only capable of red, green, blue.) You would then convert it to cmyk or a version of the likes to have it ready for printing. The same applies to videos like this, what you see on screen will be different than what you are putting on paper , unless watching on a 4k tv that has so many pixels that the colors can be better translated to what we would actually see on paper. That I learned at the Art Institute of Pittsburgh when studying desktop publishing.
For more vibrant pinks and purples I would recommend magenta (PV42) and cyan (which in the Schmincke palette is Helio cerulean (PB 15:3) and is quite close to the Helio turquoise (PB 16)). There is a reason they are the basic colours for printing along with yellow (in the Schmincke palette Cadmium yellow light (PY35)) of course. ;-) I cannot speak for other brands... but the pigments should be the same.
After many “testing” swatch mixes did find that magenta mixes very well & with several blues & lemon yellow (very light last glaze) stunning color! Ty for video as just beginning to learn how important knowing “basic color theory” as before felt like (walking in the dark) like just choose one tube color or get frozen (what color shades) 🤔!
Another fabulous video! Please tell me you are going to do more of these....like greens, browns and such. I FINALLY am beginning to understand the concept of mixing!
i love your vids so much, i just found them and i've been watching them literally all day. i find so much inspiration in you and your work. your technique is so beautiful ❤️
thanks a lot! I'm just beginning with watercolor and purple is my favorite color so I was feeling really disappointed when I couldn't make it. Thank you!!!! :)
When I can't mix the right Purple with Winsor and Netwon Cotman, I eventually gave up and tried different brands. I didn't have the same struggle mixing with Mijello, Schmincke, Rembrandt and Holbein, but your video sure helped me! Thank you so much :)
Oh gosh I feel the urge to sit and play around with watercolors but i have to get ready and go out 😭 this is so true, purple is the only color i always struggle with mixing
I can achieve beautiful with ultramarine blue pb29 and quinacridone rose pr19 deeper one with magenta, i saw a demo once it showed you can make a magenta a warm red but not the other way round ,tfs your process.
I love the purples I can mix with Quinacridone rose + French ultramarine, or Quinacridone rose + Phthalo Blue. I use the Daniel Smith brand, so those may have different names in other brands.
if you think the primary colors are yellow cyan and magenta that would help to achieve more bright colors. instead of red blue and yellow i mean. and even if you dont own those colors it might help imagine the color combinations you can make whith the ones you already have.
the purple that you mix and you call it your favorite purple actually can be mixed using quniacridone red and prussian blue.. I think it is similar in terms of color but slightly different value.
I LIVE for quinacridone and phthalocyanine and how they mix. I do not so much live for how aggressively those pigments stain anything they come in to contact with.
Quinacridone magenta and Thalo blue or Alizarin crimson and Cerulean blue... mmm purple. Good stand alone purples are Ultramarine voilet and Dioxazine voilet.
... good choice for your colors to make this video tutorial of theory of colors. into the last part you put orange color into the draw - obviously school and theory, but looks good.
Hi :) I love your videos! What kind (brand) of water-soluble gold ink do you use? I'd like to get some but don't know what to get and don't want to break the bank! Lol, thanks in advance. :)
the primary colours are yellow cyan and MAGENTA. and you don't make purple with red because there's some yellow in red, you make it with blue and MAGENTA.
i was waiting for you to say scrap the RYB and replace it with CMY based colour wheel. guess i'll have to say it myself - Cyan, Magenta and Yellow. That's where it's at. Ask your printer ;)

Purple is my favorite color! Thanks this helps a lot!
I never would've thought of that.
A very helpful tutorial Thank you.

I'd like to try your mix. What kind of turquoise are you using? I have cobalt turquoise light.
Omg! Thank you! I have always wished art supplies came with purple instead of green! 😵

Try using magenta instead of a red. Magenta is a cool toned version of red
Jellie N I think that Crimond would also nice as well....Let's add that to the list!! 😀
so red + blue in watercolor you get purple or violet? then purple is more blue or more red?
Great video. :o I already knew this though.
I've found cerulean blue and alizarin crimson create the best base for a neutral purple :)
hOMAIGASH THANK YUU U DID MY REQUEST AAA
i never expected this
Could you make a review on the mijello mission gold water colour set? Is it better than the winsor and newtons watercolour ?
urmimala nath you should try one tube of the mijello first. I have one and it's COOL! But, they are expensive.
new subbie!!! I found you yesterday and I'm obsessed so hehehe your two trolls already visited. 😅 I love purple and I love this video.
My favourite purple recipe is magenta and Ultramarine blue. 💜
OH YES! Those are AWESOME! :D Makes my Heart smile!

Thanks for this video, and so much knowledge in the comments ! :)
Thank you so much🤗👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Thank u! know I now how to get more ranges of purple without buying more tubes.
Quinacridone magenta and Thalo blue or Alizarin crimson and Cerulean blue... mmm purple. Good stand alone purples are Ultramarine voilet and Dioxazine voilet.
I only have a ketchup red and royal blue color!! I can't successfully mix a magenta color and I only get a dusty rose color when trying to make purple

I personally like to mix purple and turquoise to make a really nice deep blue color.
Hi I'm just wondering what your favorite color is?...
Opera Pink - hands down! :D
the primary colours are yellow cyan and MAGENTA.
and you don't make purple with red because there's some yellow in red, you make it with blue and MAGENTA.
Niiiiice !
try Magenta or opera and Cyan, you'd get a very vibrant range of purples
have your read this article about magenta and cyan being the true primaries and not red and blue?

Is this music from an Egyptian Movie? :')
I have the same problem with orange 😂

Mix crimson and blue. Problem solved
