you're totally right I was using print paper all my life and then I used watercolor paper and it was awesome because I could make all the techniques that I saw in TH-cam
this has cleared up so many things as i was watching the video i was kinda wishing i had seen it last week before i bought a watercolor paper pad but when you mentioned that cold pressed is better i'm a little bit relieved because it seems to me that i have a cold pressed paper your channel is what i've been looking for in a while i subscribed, i got the bell on because i don't want to miss this series

Because as you mentioned the paint sits on the surface and can easily be lifted off whether you mean to or not. There are ways around it, but that's the biggest difference for me when choosing a paper for a project. Thanks for all your informative work on your channel!

I started out watercolor on Mixed media paper because I like using colored pencils on top of my watercolors and markers. my design class had me buy cold press paper and I'm going to start using it more for some paintings! I hope the tooth will do the same thing that I bought the mixed media for!

When I first started water color I used 98 pound paper, I ordered it online and didn’t really know, but I actually love it. I kinda like the warp I get, it’s satisfying to see it when he book is closed. If I go slow and don’t soak the paper it’s actually fine. And it’s cheep (as a collage student) I can really practice my style and not be afraid of wasting good paper that’s more expensive

I have not painted since I was a really young kid (7-9), and that was just with the Crayola kids set; now that I’m in my 30’s, I’m wanting to pick painting up again, but had no clue where to start for items more for the student/adult level. I had no clue there was a difference in the paper, I will be watching all of your videos now and subscribing for more helpful tips. Loved the effects, very pretty and artistic, made the video funnier to watch; I did have a hard time seeing the papers though due to the blur effect, but that’s fine.
There is a third option with the paper. Years ago you could only buy it in full sheets of 22 by 30 inches. Many artists prefer the full sheets and the pricing is more economical.

Hi Kathy great video! I am new to water coloring and tried my first water color project with Tombow brush pens after watching your video. I used strathmore 140lb cold press water color paper. I did not think I was applying a lot of water or going over one spot to much but some of the paper started to flake off. Do you know what I did wrong?

I have to try the tracing trick because I almost always ruin the page by erasing. I mean I knew about tracing all along just didn't use it as its an extra effort. Anyway, thanks for the video. I didn't know about hot and cold pressed difference either.
Your information about dry time is not correct, arches hot pressed paper dries faster than cold press. What you showed is blooming, the watercolor decides to travel away because of the texture and fibers on the cold press, but not because is being absorbed faster. Cold press tend to stay moisten longer than hot press.
Cassiopeia hey! I’m using canson Heritage hot pressed 300gsm paper. When I use black Indian ink on it with a nib (tried two different nibs) the ink splurges. When I use lower quality paper the lines look a lot better. Do you know if cold pressed paper or drawing paper would work better for linework with nibs? Or by switching to Arches instead of Heritage?
This is a little off topic, but, the mic is clipping a lot in the beginning of the video. It doesn't affect the quality of the video all that much, but you can fix it by lowering the mic's sensitivity. I recommend you place it just off frame and set it so that it only clips when you shout. Then, use a compressor (in Audacity, for instance) on the finished take to make the volume of the voice louder overall, and to stomp out the noise. I can explain how to do it in more detail if you're interested.
You say that watercolour pads are the cheapest option. I didn’t find that in my case, I have 1.4m x 10m roll which roughly gives me 220 A4 sheets. The watercolour paper rolls vegan-friendly (1.4 x 10m roll or similar surface area) I have are Fabriano Artistico (cold press, fine) for 90 euros, Fabriano Artistico (hot press) 140 euros, canson moulin du Roy hot press for 89 euros. These are considerably cheaper than buying watercolour pads in the long run. I am learning to paint on them, I chose these papers after initially trying out the smaller pads. Rolls could save a lot in the long run.
Check out Owings Art's new review of Stonehenge Aqua Watercolir paper... there you would see that its in a class of its own and dont warp no matter how much water you can throw at it. Keep up the good work... As you say we all need a guiding hand especially when you start out with watercolor. I have used oil since 1985 and started only recently wuth watercolor and if i hzve watched more videos on youtube earlier could have saved myself stacks of money and frustration. Now matter how long you had been painting with oil, its like starting for the first time using watercolor.
Honestly I find that cold press tends to not be able to hold water as smoothly and efficiently as hot press, but that’s probably because it was cheap...or because it was 90 lbs
Also no one bothered to tell me when I started paper has chemicals in it that help the watercolor new people need to understand also. Certainly not trying to tell you how to make your videos I just needed that information in the beginning and couldn't understand anything until I understood the full properties of the paper.
I have 100% cotton, asid free, 300gsm watercolor paper which is consider as artist grade paper. but when I see fabriano artist watercolor paper, it's 5x the price. But I still love my "artist" watercolor paper with artist watercolor paper characteristic.

What is "water control", and if it is akin to paint control, wouldn't hot press paper provide a lot more water control than cold press paper?

Aaah I hate it. I like doing cartooney things with outlines as well as kinda realistic flowers and birds. Need both. Ouch. $$$
