Mama Tiago, you are a true mum. Tiago would always love you. He is safe and he can survive anywhere in the world. You gave him a good life experience. I am Yoruba but born in the UK. I went to Nigeria on a holiday as a child without my parents and said I wanted to stay in Nigeria with my cousins. My parents stayed back in London while I schooled in Lagos. It was fun back then. I met my great granma, my granma, grandpa x2, great aunts, my ijebu kindred. Oh I visited many places far into Yoruba land, North of Nigeria, SE of Nigeria. I went to schools that banned yoruba speaking in school. But, I learnt my Yoruba from the streets, the kids, iya olonje, iya onidiri, my village trips to understand proper ijebu, the transport guy, the area locals. I played on the streets back then because we were safe back then. I'm Christian but have muslim family members and traditionalists. We all celebrated each others festivals together. I went to Ijebu with my father for traditional festivals to understand my culture. My great aunt was an Olori of a town under Ijebu Ode called Ososa and she was a christian but practiced our yoruba culture with her heart. I even met Chief Ogunde back then as he came from that town.Yes, I lived in a protected environment but, we ventured out to impoverished territories of Lagos that was deemed dangerous and we sure looked different (ajebota) was the word they called us as they said we looked too different from the people of these areas like Mushin, Ajegunle, Oshodi, isale-eko, Ebute-Ero and internal Lagos. I loved Nigeria and I know its changed but, I'm still a Nigerian any day. I'm proud to be a Yoruba woman and I wear our outfit with pride as oyibo ask to take pics with me when they see me in full yoruba attire. I'm no celebrity but, lover of my culture.

I so relate to why the mum is in tears talking about this. She made a big decision back then not knowing what the consequences could be. As a mother, you're always torn between following your passion to the ends of the world and being responsible to your family's demands. She made a huge bet bringing him to Nigeria. I bet she got criticized for it but in this moment, she's proud enough of her boy to say it was all worth it. I can so relate with you, ma❤

True to God, I feel like crying, especially when i listened to the advise given to us Yorubas in the latter end of this interview by Mrs. Gomes and her handsome son. To even think that we are not uncomfortable losing our heritage and culture is a grave danger and misnomer. She ensured that her son speaks and understand his mother tonge and also relish the Yoruba Asha...And we have some f00lish Yoruba parents who can sue you or break ties with you, if you speak Yoruba to their children. 13 years ago, when I had my first child and 2 others years later, I gave them all Yoruba names & when the Pastor who wanted to conduct the naming ceremony asked for my first daughter's ,English name, I told him that my daughter is a Yoruba girl like her father and will have only Yoruba name, when he was trying to convince me to chose a Christian name, I sent him and his crew out of my house and I and my family named our daughter & she is doing very fine.
I still attend their church, since they do not own it and they even apologized to me...When I wanted to name my two other kids, they gladly did the ceremony on my terms & conditions. I also dropped my Hebrew name & started using only my Yoruba names. I encourage mostly Yoruba as our mode of conversation at home, because the schools only allow English, but the balance is paying off. When my children speak to me in English, I respond in konk Yoruba & most times, I encourage them to speak back in Yoruba. Initially, i use to feel like laughing at their funny accents but gradually they improved. I will not allow a foreign culture to invade my lineage. I tell my kids stories about Yoruba history and folklores. I tell them stories that D.O Fagunwa wrote in his book, Ogboju Ode ninu Igbo Irunmole...They love them dearly and always beg me for more. As a graduate of history, i'm good at story telling. these are ways we can preserve ourselves and culture....Nothing bad about it.
