THANK YOU for this episode! Katatonia is easily in my Top 5 bands of all time. Since I've heard 'For my demons' back in 1999. I was hooked. Please make Part 2 with albums from Discouraged Ones to The Great Cold Distance.
I have listened to ‚City Burials‘ literally a thousand times and I still find new parts and twists in their songs. Unbelievable! I love your lesson and we all know that one can only scratch the surface .. like sailing on an ocean of melancholic melodies and complex metal music. Thank you indeed David!
There are shockingly few deep dives into the very idiosyncratic approach to harmony and composition this band has. You're doing god's work here, very much appreciated!
Great episode! Katatonia has been of my favorite bands since 1996 and I love all eras of the band. The solo on untrodden from the last album is one of my favorite solos of all time.
I happened on Katatonia about a year ago and I couldn't figure out why they 'fit' so well with my 'standards' until this LNL. A-minor, Ace, and it all came together. Thanks for featuring this band that definitely needs more exposure.
I found Katatonia at just the right time in my life. I was late to the party but the impact on my life is huge. It just feels right. So much so I have a Katatonia tattoo.
That's why I love this channel. You literally went from one style of music to other radically different and discover a world of great players and tunes. Never ever heard of Katatonia, great found! Thanks Dave!!
I'm so glad you did this. I had a brief jam band and we learned a handful of covers with each guy picking a song - I picked 'For My Demons' but learned Shining's cool intro from their cover!
Thank you David! Really appreciate you doing this video and I'll definitely be watching it again. If you do a part 2, I'd especially love to hear what you think about DO / TD / LFDGD. DO has a unique vibe that's hard to pin down, and I wonder what makes it tick. LFDGD gets interesting with the six-string chords, too.
Wow! What a surprise! Just the best stuff here. Another big fan here (there are many fans in the US). I got into them on Viva Emptiness in the wake of Blackwater Park. They’ve only continued to evolve into what they are today. Some unique musical force.
I listened to Bloodbath (one of my fav extreme DM bands) and Katatonia for so long but only found out a couple years ago that Anders and Jonas were the core of BB. It is 🤯. Such greatness at far ends of the spectrum. Wow! Check out Bloodbath’s Grand Morbid Funeral. Great album. One of greatest HM2 tones ever recorded.
Katatonia are extraordinarily beautiful chordsmiths and so much of their newer stuff just forces me to sit back and hear all the movement in the arrangement while somehow still being absolutely crushingly miserable and stirring
I paused this video to go check them out. I hadn't heard Katatonia before, but now I have! Thanks for that and the greay lesson as always David. I can see why you like them so much. I listened to a couple of their songs live in 2011. May just be one of my fave bands now too. 😊
I'm glad you're liking these guys! Check out The Fall Of Hearts album - it's brilliant! I bought it digitally at first, then I wanted the CD for my music library. The next thing I knew, I wanted it on vinyl just to have it. I'm obsessed with this band lately. : )
@@LateNightLessons : Definitely will! In case you didn't see it in another thread here, check out Stimpy Lockjaw. If I could only recommend a fellow guitarist one one band, it would be them. It;s the most unique blend of metal and jazz I've ever heard, and imo the most natural in it's "weirdness." Also, Blotted Science is fun just to have your mind blown by ridiculousness, in a good way imo.
I've never heard of this group until now. They sound awesome! I'll definitely be learning some of their music! Thank you for covering the bands we love and introducing us to new ones
Awesome video. Katatonia is my favourite band and Anders is unironically my favourite guitarist and inspiration for a lot of what I do in my own guitar playing. I think he's super underrated for his song composition and playing - Jonas is underrated too for his musical ability, I think he wrote the majority of City Burials (which I didn't like too much, but the songs I do like are fantastic) and Night is the new day. I'm going to save this video so I can refer to it for chord references when I'm making my own music 😅
Hey! I did create a Ghost Chordplay a few years ago. It's an early episode, but hell yeah - Ghost kicks ass! : ) ---> th-cam.com/video/hNOHWYjGIQY/w-d-xo.html
Yea I’m like, who’s that? Interesting. I like the dark haunting chords. I’m 65 years old I thought I’d seen it all but then Bucket Head showed up o my TH-cam, man! Talk about getting blown away that guy mesmerized me, his legato licks are amazing. Talk about haunting tunes this guy is a modern day Hendrix, Paul Gilbert, & Paige rolled up in one. He’s amazing! Check him out if you haven’t heard of him
very nice video, I've been in love with the fall of hearts since it came out but never really liked any of their other albums besides great cold distance. Thanks for introducing me to night is the new day
Tonight's Decision and Last Fair Deal Gone Down were in constant rotation for me in high school. Hadn't thought about them much lately, so it's very much appreciated to be reminded how much I loved them.
Their new album didn't disappoint either. One of my favorite songs from The Fall of Hearts as well is The Night Subscriber. They are absolutely addicting to listen to
I started listening to Katatonia with "Last Fair Deal Gone Down" - parallel to "Blackwater Park" by Opeth which was released the same year. Can we coin the term "Dark Prog" for this genre, please? ;-)
Done ---> : ) And don't forget there are two Megadeth Chordplay episodes that feature a little of his rhythm playing (along with Mustaine, Friedman, and the gang). ROCK ON! th-cam.com/video/kRrQdZJz2GM/w-d-xo.html
@@LateNightLessons : Hey, I've probably mentioned this before, but Stimpy Lockjaw is amazing. If you want to hear metal and jazz mixed in a way no one else does, they're it. I can barely wrap my head around some of their stuff. If I could recommend any fellow guitarist just one band, it's them.. well, listen to Blotted Science too, just to have your head exploded. lols
So Per Erickson the other guitarist in Katatonia is the lead guitarist in Ghost for all the live shows Frederick Akkeson played all the leads on the new Ghost release Impera just some ties to the whole Sweden thing kool stuff thanks David 🤘
One of my all time favourite bands! My album of choice is The Great Cold Distance but they're all great. Can't wait for the new one later on this month and to see them live once again. Your PRS guitar is beautiful, which model is that? Not very familiar with their range.
Swallow the Sun is another great melodic metal band. Insomnium from Finland, Draconian. The Europeans know their melodic death metal. Racing Heart is a great Katatonia song also
Please do a lesson on there older stuff Tonight's decision Last Fair deal gone Discouraged ones Etc But I've been following your videos for quite a few years now and you just blew my mind when you said Katatonia is one of your favourite bands
Katatonia is my absolute favorite band & Anders is THE most underrated guitarist in metal. I love this band

These guys are great and I'll what I can do about making a Part Two!
ROCK ON!
@@LateNightLessons : Great to hear that, because I'm ready even for part three. 😁
check out a band called Novembre btw
@@LateNightLessons sooo heh heh hehhhh how bout that part 2?
Thanks for turning me on to these guys.
As an old Alice in Chains fanatic I adore this mix of haunting and heavy.

Katatonia is an amazing band and fully deserving of the attention. Easily one of my favourite bands and have changed and evolved so much
I hadn't heard them until now, but super happy I have. Just listened to part of a live show from 2011.
Thank you so much for this! Katatonia are among the most epic bands ever and its so good to see you recognizing them here on your channel.🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘
Wow! Thanks for much for doing a lesson on Katatonia. They are one of my all-time favourite bands for around 20 years now!
Thanks Dave ... first time hearing about them.
Love this band and their music. Thank you for making this.

I first heard about them through Mikael Akerfeldt. Cool lesson and those bloodbath albums with Mikael on vocals are awesome.
Awesome! Never thought you would do this band. Thanks!
Good timing; I was just listening to Brave Murder Day today.

Back in the late 90s I listened to brave murder day and discouraged ones a TON. They still instantly transport me to that era.

I've been fan of them for more than 20 years and still. The last album is fascinating. Thanks for the lesson.
Thanks for great lesson!
Like Amorphis they started as a heavier band and evolved musically. Amorphis would be another good deep dive.

Per Eriksson is actually the lead guitarist for Ghost now. He played with Katatonia and Bloodbath. Would love to see a Ghost 3 for all or chordsplay

Oh man! A Chris Poland episode would be 🤯. The guy’s an enigma. One of those rare players that you hear and just know who it is.
Can you please make a tab for Second, sir? Its so good!

I had just commented this and then saw your comment. Per fits really well in Ghost. Going to se them in September with Mastodon. Im so excited
Hi, great video! But did you know that actually Jonas Renkse is behind composition from drums through guitars to vocals for many of their songs?

Hi can you do one for The Smiths?
sounds like the new stuff is mostly roger, he has a very distinctive set of chops, check out his pedalbord video and you will get the idea
