Thank you for the really detailed video about the printer and for the other videos on your channel. We often have photos printed but have now decided to buy the ET 8550 for Christmas so that we can print at home - we're really looking forward to when it finally arrives.
Glad it was helpful! Do check the regularly updated written review as well if you have not seen it www.northlight-images.co.uk/epson-et-8550-printer-review/
Keith, you are truly wonderful! Seeing you time and time again sitting with different charts, inks etc. has taught me the most valuable lesson: patience is key :) Thanks for inspiring so many of us!
Thank you very much for sharing your profound knowledge. It comes at just the right time for me as I have just received an ET-8550 this week. People like you make the internet the helpful tool it was invented to be. I like your calm and realistic way of sharing technical knowledge. I'm already looking forward to the next video.
I tried the Ilford Smooth Pearl (310 GSM) on this printer for B&W today. Media type Epson Premium Semi Gloss. In Advanced B&W mode. I have to say that I got pretty neutral prints
A very timely video. I took delivery of a ET-8550 a couple of days ago. I already have a box of Canon Platinum Pro paper, and am about to order some Fotospeed Metallic Lustre. Fortuitously you've just produced ICC profiles for both. Ko-Fi donation made. Thanks Keith.
Awesome! We (Red River) are working on new profiles for the 8550 as well. Our current profiles are fine, but were done by a 3rd party company - the new ones (like all of our newer profiles) will be done in-house :-) I agree about using Epson Print Layout. Its not as nice as Canon Professional Print and Layout but its better than printing through Photoshop print dialog IMHO.
Thanks - both EPL and PPL could do with some improvements, but they are good tools for teaching and enable me to avoid the necessity of using the likes of Lightroom or showing examples on win PCs ;-) PPL for example has too many unsupported, unexplained features...
@@aaronclausen3232 nope they are not even printed yet, it will be a couple weeks still Our current ones are fine, don't let that stop you! Just check back in a couple weeks for the updates 🙂
I've found Epson media installer useful: you can copy a suitable media (and tune it if needed), point to an ICC profile and rename it whatever you need. No need to remember correct media setting after that, just select it from Epson print layout and everything is correct. Reduces errors probably when you don't have to remember to change media setting. It works like any native paper setting. I have P900 but this should be same for every Epson printer. I've had such good results with paper manufacturer profiles, I've not made profiles myself. Yet, putting media setting and icc profile together makes using them nicer.
Yes - it's something I definitely cover [and use] with the printers which allow it. Like the MCT for Canon [but less so I'd suggest] it's a tool which confuses many [going by questions over the years]. The 8550 doesn't support this, which I guess reflects its original 'non pro' target market.
Hi Keith, Great info. Got a newbie question. So , you recommend, when using SW like Photoshop, not to use the profile from the SW (like Photoshop), but use the printer settings for the specified paper?
If printing from Photoshop - I'd suggest installing the Epson EPL software. This works as a plugin for Photoshop [or standalone] Set the profile in EPL See all the examples in my main written 8550 review www.northlight-images.co.uk/epson-et-8550-printer-review/
Hi Keith, is it fair to say that it is almost imperative to ensure your monitor is calibrated first and then paper profiles becomes next important? I find setting the correct brightness on my monitor the hardest part. My spyderx pro keeps telling me it’s too dark but when I set it according to the suggest setting it’s way to bright and I end up with dark prints! Oh my, it’s never ending learning the right way to setup everything ☺️
I turn off/ignore any brightness suggestions - just set to 100 cd/m2 It's possible to print well on any monitor with printer profiles - they are the important bit. The monitor being set up well just makes it easier to get right if you are editing/adjusting
One of your most helpful videos - thank you. I notice that the obvious connection between the 8550 and Epson's own papers is less well covered. Are their papers not so good? It would seem that most users will naturally go with Epson's own papers for simplicity's sake. Are they missing something?
Thanks - purely connected with papers I had in stock and quantities of in A3+ sheets. Quite a few papers I have only in roll format and that is a chore to cut sections off...
I have been chatting with HM lately and today I got the answer from them and it goes "Yes, we had to recreate the profiles. We are close to finalising them and will upload them as soon as possible. At the moment this will be by the end of January at the latest, but it could be sooner." So, Hahnemuhle is about to release their remade icc profiles for ET8550 very soon! I just wanted to share this information with you all.
@@KeithCooperI also have a roll, but it's 24" :-) I'm afraid HM's profiles won't be 100% compstible with the EU version of 8550. The media types of the EU and US versions of 8550 are different.
@@OrelRussia Why? Given where HM are based, would not their profile match more likely the printer version available here [and presumably also in the EU]. Anyway, what specific differences are there between my 8550 and one I might get from the US [apart from it being in a a white case]
@@KeithCooper Canson is also based in EU, but created their profiles for the US version of 8550. As for the differences, for instance, the EU version doesn't have a Luster media, while the US version has. You may say this media is close to Semi-gloss. It is true but the US version has Semigloss media as well.
Hello Sir! I would like to ask for your help. I would like to buy a printer to produce catalogues and A3 flyers. Print quality is important to me, but I don't want to spend a lot on ink cartridges. Printing speed is not important, because I do not want to produce a large number of flyers. I am looking for an upper mid-range printer. What can you recommend for me? Thanks for your answer!
Do you know if the printer can print on Magnetic Sheets? I assume yes since it can print on canvas and they’re similar in thickness. Any guidance would be appreciated
Hi Keith regarding the proofing paper I bought my p5000 from an Epson engineer he gave me a part roll of said paper really like it but is it ok for personal prints or just proofing. Think I read some place not recommended for personal prints. Cheers jay.
Thank you sir! I’m new to this printer, How can I print via Lightroom? Is there a plug-in like canon studio pro or directly print ? Any suggestion will be appreciated. 🙏
Thank you for the fantastic information. I see that you have profiles for Epson papers, for example Premium Glossy Photo Paper. Would you say your profil is better than Epson's?
Different - not necessarily better There is no such thing as a 'correct' profile - all software makes some compromises. Some people have said they prefer the look of mine, but I'd not say 'better' ;-)
@@KeithCooper Thank you for the very diplomatic answer, the position of Foreign Minister will soon be vacant here, that could be something for you.... 🙂
Good day Keith, I wanted to ask you if you ever have come in contact with or even tested the Epson SureColor SC-T2100? It seem to be an very interesting printer for it's price point. It is a large format 24" printer, has roll support even with a cutter and pigment inks. Maybe something interesting for you to do testing I thought. However, have a good one and thanks for all the very useful contend you provide!
i have an Epson et-8550 printer, using the same ink that came with it. I currently bought data color spyder print. I was wondering, how could I create an ICC file for a friend that has the same printer, but it's using a different paper? Any suggestions? Thanks Cheers.
Just get some of the paper, print the target and make the profile the same way as you would normally Then send them the icc profile file which was made

Hi Keith. Quick question, that Canon paper you said they were Fine Art Rag? The Canon website only shows Fine Art Smooth and Rough. Are they the same?
Sorry - verbal typo [and a reason I still dislike video] Fine Art Rough - correct in the list in the notes.

Only of the media works with the inks - it might need feeding at the back, but this is not a media type I have ever had to test.
I tried a semi gloss 8.5x11” 20mil sheet and ran it through the rear feeder and printed great
